  • 21、Staying Motivated When Studying

Some people say that the hardest step in studying is to get started. Other people, however, find it difficult to stay motivated, especially when the end seems a long way away. This situation arises. There is no single strategy that will work for everyone. However, 1 and you can see if they work for you in supporting ongoing motivation.

Keep your end goal in mind

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to remember why you are studying in the first place. “Getting good exam results” is not necessarily very motivating. Instead, you need to look beyond that to what the exam results will get you,2 The more detail you can provide for your goal, the easier it will be to keep in mind.

    Get into a study routine

It is generally easier to stay motivated if your studying becomes part of your everyday life. For example, you might choose to get up an hour earlier, and spend that hour studying each day. That way, 3, because you know that it is set aside for a purpose. Your friends and family will also get to know when your study time happens, and hopefully avoid you then.

    4

Especially when you first start studying, you will not necessarily know what works for you. It is therefore worth trying different ways of doing, to see which you find most productive. You may find it helpful to vary your style of working. You could, for example, try working in different places. You could also try different types of activities. Options include reading over your notes, writing a mind map, making up songs or poems to help you remember facts.

    5.

There are plenty of people to tell you that they have the answer to staying motivated while studying. They may have the answer for them, but only you can work out the answer for you.

A.There is no “one size fits all”

    B.Try various study approaches

C.Break the task down into different parts

D.there are plenty of options that you can try

E.it is easier to avoid being distracted during your study time

F.A system of short-term goals and suitable rewards may be needed

G.whether that is a place at your chosen school or university, or a new job

  • 22、I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.

It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.

The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to flourish.

What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.

Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.

Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.

Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing? Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder that __________.

【1】What is the tree’s survival strategy?

    A.It attracts beneficial pollinators.

B.It lets out poison to drive away pests.

C.It produces a chemical fatal to some plants.

D.It competes for nutrition with similar species.

【2】Which of the following DOESN’T account for the author’s love-hate relationship with the tree?

A.The volume of its fruits may bring inconvenience.

B.The tree outcompetes the native plants in the garden.

C.The tree is home to numerous birds and other creatures.

D.The presence of the tree takes up much space of the garden.

【3】The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that _________.

A.it’s better to give than to take

B.trees and plants have their own ways to flourish

C.even a good relationship is not always trouble-free

D.acceptance, instead of resistance, is the better way to be

  • 23、Barred owls (大林鸮猫头鹰) are a large species native to eastern North America, but they began moving west at the start of the 20th century. By 1973, large numbers of barred owls had arrived in the western state of Washington. Later they moved south into Oregon and California.

In parts of the Pacific Northwest, the owls are now believed to be causing a drop in the population of a smaller, less aggressive bird: the northern spotted owl. In many ways, the barred owl is the spotted owl’s worst enemy. The barred owl has more babies per year and eats the same animals, like squirrels and wood rats. And their numbers are now larger in many parts of the spotted owl’s traditional territory (领地).

David Wiens is a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He and other officials are doing something unusual to protect spotted owls: killing barred owls. It is an experimental program. More than 2,400 barred owls have already been shot.

Wiens is the son of a well-known bird expert and grew up with the fascination for birds. He has mixed feelings about the program. “It’s a little distasteful, I think, to go out killing barred owls to save another owl species,” he says. But he adds, “We knew that barred owls were out competing spotted owls and their numbers were growing too fast.”

To catch barred owls, officials put digital (电子的) bird callers on the ground. Then they step back and wait as several sounds from the devices fill the air. All of this happens in the dark of night. Barred owls dislike other birds in their territory, so they will fly down and chase other owls out. That is when Wiens and his team try to shoot them.

【1】What’s the main problem with spotted owls?

    A.They have no food.

B.They have more babies each year.

    C.They are hunted by man.

D.Barred owls take many parts of their territory.

【2】Why are barred owls being killed?

A.They are eating the spotted owls.

B.They are killing each other to survive.

C.They are putting the spotted owls in danger.

D.They are destroying large areas of forests.

【3】Why did the officials put digital bird callers?

    A.To kill barred owls.

    B.To puzzle barred owls.

    C.To protect barred owls.

    D.To frighten barred owls.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Keeping the Balance of Nature

    B.Preventing Birds from Playing Fair

    C.Protecting Birds in Danger

D.Killing One Animal to Save Another

  • 24、It’s no secret that Auckland (the largest city in New Zealand) is a diverse city full of different cultures and new research has shown exactly how it and the rest of the country are changing.

More than 200 ethnic (种族的) groups are recorded as living here and Auckland is considered to have a wider variety of cultural groups than London or Sydney, with 40 percent of its population made up of different ethnicities.

The changing makeup of the country’s population is featured in the latest NZ Geographic magazine, which focuses on ethnic diversity, age, wealth and attitudes, drawn from the latest census (人口普查) figures.

Massey University humanities and social sciences research director Professor Paul Spoonley said Auckland’s multiculturalism today is way beyond what experts believed likely a few years ago.

Asian communities, in particular, in New Zealand have almost doubled since 2001, when 6. 6 percent of the Kiwi people(New Zealanders) were Asian. The proportion (比例) in Auckland was 14.6 percent. By 2006, 18.9 percent of the citizens in the city were Asian and today 23 percent identify themselves as Asian.

Nationally, the census showed 11.8 percent of the population was Asian-and that figure was increasing.

“The figures are higher than I would have thought a few years back,” Mr. Spoonley said. “And the healthcare system is attracting Asian workers.”

The article also showed that Kiwis had overall become more accepting of migrant communities and particularly of Asian peoples. That had been a hugely noticeable change, Mr. Spoonley said.

An Asian community leader Kai Luey in Auckland said there were a number of things that attracted Asians to New Zealand and particularly to Auckland. “The environment is clean, there’s fresh air and there’s safety of food...There’s a good education system here in New Zealand...”

New Zealand was also considered to be a much safer place than many other countries, such as America, Canada and Australia.

【1】What change has taken place in Auckland?

A.It has been developing at a higher speed.

B.It has started to control its population.

C.It has begun to value ethnic cultures.

D.It has become a more diverse city.

【2】What is the proportion of Asians in Auckland now?

    A.About onetenth.

    B.Below onefifth.

    C.Nearly onefourth.

    D.More than twofifths.

【3】Why do many Asians migrate to New Zealand according to Spoonley?

    A.They need a better education.

B.They want to live in a safe place.

    C.They love the clean environment.

D.They hope to get better healthcare.

【4】What do most New Zealanders think of Asian migrants?

A.They are part of the society.

B.They are a small ethnic group.

C.They are very likely to change.

D.They are a threat to the country.

Kale looked past the door crack and smiled at the rise and fall of his mother’s breathing. He looked at the hall clock once again. waiting for the second hand to finish its circle. Three. Two. One.

. . Mom! It’s eight o’clock. Christmas morning. Time for presents. “ Kate rushed onto the bed, and climbed on top of the sleeping woman. But after a long night shift, Mom was too tired. She told Kale to wait for another half hour.

Though he was young, he was aware of their situation. His mother worked most of the day in a restaurant and it usually left her tired. He nodded, kissed her forehead and left the room.

Like most seven-year-olds, he had a problem waiting patiently for anything. A few minutes later, a thought struck him and he smiled. He could go and check the present by himself. “We wish you a Merry Christmas.” Kale’s singing died when he turned the comer. He saw their small tree with nothing but space underneath it.

Frustrated as he was, he knew that Mom was doing all that she could to make ends meet. It was true that he had no present, but neither did Mom. Kale held his disappointment back inside and went into the kitchen to make her breakfast as the Christmas present. Half an hour later, with the food prepared. he knocked at the door. Kate put on his most handsome smile before entering and presented her with the sandwich he made. “Merry Christmas, Mom! This is my present for you.” Deeply moved by her son, she showered his face with grateful kisses.

“Wait here, my young man.” She climbed out of the bed and left the room.
