二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Carol Vaness, the well-known American opera singer, was born in San Diego and began her professional performance in San Francisco. She has sung at many of the major opera houses in the world. Unlike other world-famous male opera singers, she was particularly known for her Mozart operatic roles.

At the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where she often sings, Carol’s voice must be loud enough to be heard by four thousand people. It must reach every person in the theater, without a microphone, even when she’s singing softly. The reason Carol can project her voice that far is the way she breathes.

“When you breathe, it’s like a swimmer taking a deep breath before going underwater,” Carol explains. “You have to take a lot of air into your lungs.”

According to Carol, the main difference between pop singing and opera is “how you breathe, how much air you take in, and how you control it coming out. Regular singing is more like speaking, and it’s a lot softer.

Ever since she started piano lessons at the age of ten, Carol has loved music. As she got older, she decided to become a music teacher. When she went to college, she took singing lessons as part of her studies. Her voice teacher discovered that nineteen-year-old Carol had an exceptionally beautiful soprano(女高音) voice the highest singing voice for women.

Today, Carol performs throughout the United States and Europe and she has sung for almost twenty years. But she has never forgotten why she started singing in the first place. “Put your heart into your singing and enjoy it,” says Carol, “because singing is a great joy. That’s why I sing. In fact, that’s why everybody sings.”

【1】What is the best title for this passage?

    A. The Way a Star Sings

    B. An Opera Star

    C. Opera Singing and Pop Singing

    D. Singing without a Microphone

【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE?

    A. A pop singer breathes more deeply than an opera singer when he or she sings.

    B. Opera singing is more like speaking.

    C. A pop singer takes in much more air than an opera singer when singing.

    D. An opera singer breathes differently from a pop singer when singing.

【3】From the passage you can conclude all the following EXCEPT that __________.

    A. Carol once learned to play the piano

    B. Carol has been singing opera for 20 years or so

    C. Carol worked as a music teacher

    D. Carol is popular with Americans and Europeans

  • 22、   California’s attack on second-hand smoke reached its historic high this New Year, when even indoor areas in bars and casinos became smoke-free by force of law. The rules on smoke exposure have taken a 180-degree turn in less than a generation. In the United States of my youth, every citizen was hostage(人质)to other people’s cigarettes in airplanes, in offices and in almost every other public place. Now the indoor areas of public life are all nonsmoking zones — an inconvenience for the 25% of adults who smoke, but a benefit of large proportions to the breathing system of the 75% who do not.

In the cold and flu, the greatest risk of appearing in public is not tobacco smoke, but rather contagious(接触传染的)disease. And strangers who would not dream of blowing smoke in your face seem happy enough about coughing and sneezing whenever they see you coming.

Isn’t there a double standard here, when the same folks prohibited from smoking in my office building can sneeze me home for a week of hell with the ruling bacterium of the season? Why don’t the contagious among us stay home or wear those cut little paper nose and mouth covers or at least feel bad about putting the rest of us at risk of sharing their misery?

Could it be that the similarity passing a law that requires germ-free public spaces. But two smaller lessons do come from the contrasting treatment of germs and cigarettes. The first lesson is that what we accept in public is much more a matter of particular social expectation than scientific studies. The French read scientific journals just as diligently as do Americans, yet the average French cafe contains more smoke than a forest fire. You are more likely to encounter a face full of tobacco smoke if you go to Japan this year than you would in Los Aneles. But you will also notice hundreds of people on the subway in Japan who wear paper mask to avoid spreading contagious disease that they carry. Which culture is more considerate depends on the particular subject of the inquiry. The standard for what is polite in public varies tremendously from one social setting to another.

1The first paragraph tells us ________.

A.the rules on smoke exposure have become less strict

B.in the past people exposed to other people’s cigarettes complained a lot

C.in California, smoke-free zones in public places have existed for a long time

D.most people can benefit from banning indoor smoking in public places

2What can be inferred from the passage?

A.People think coughing and sneezing are less harmful than smoking in public.

B.Sick people should live alone and stay home wearing paper masks all winter.

C.Strangers will feel bad when they cough and sneeze in front of other people.

D.Those with contagious diseases feel bad sharing their misery with others.

3The tone of the passage is best described as ______.

    A.encouraging B.worrying

    C.carefree D.suspicious

4What does the author want to express in this passage?

A.Learn from Japan. B.Don’t smoke indoors.

C.Pay attention to environmental germs. D.Stay home all winter.

  • 23、   For athletes and volunteers, next year’s Tokyo Olympics could become known as the Get-Up-Early Games.

Hoping to beat the summer heat in the Japanese capital, organizers said on Tuesday they will start the men’s 50-kilometer race walk final at 5:30 am, while the men’s and the women’s marathon finals will go at 6 am. The men’s and the women’s triathlon start at 7:30 am. The women’s softball has games scheduled for 9 am, but no men’s baseball games will start before noon.

“A 9 am start is early. That’s my impression,” said Reika Utsugi, head coach of Japan’s women’s softball team. “But we will have one year for the preparation. Softball cannot decide the times.” Softball and baseball were dropped after the 2008 Olympics, and are appearing because of their popularity in Japan.

The 1964 Tokyo Olympics were held in the autumn and did not face heat problems. Modern Olympics which are held every four years can no longer be held during that time, avoiding Europe’s crowded soccer schedule, and year-round scheduling of baseball, basketball and hockey in the US. Koji Murofushi, sports director of the Tokyo Games, said organizers had consulted about scheduling with the International Olympic Committee(IOC), the governing bodies of the individual sports, athletes and medical experts. He said athletes would be able to adapt.

“When we look at the Olympic Games as a whole, of course we need to consider the global audience, adjust and control the overall schedule,” Murofushi said. “Athletes, when they know the schedule in advance, can make adjustments to their preparations.”

As previously announced, the swimming finals will begin at 10:30 am. The swim schedule has nothing to do with the heat and will follow the pattern of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Organizers say the first gold medal event will be the women’s 10-meter air rifle, which will take place on July 25 – the day after the opening ceremony. Organizers have labeled Aug 8 – the day before the closing ceremony – as “Super Saturday”, with about 30 finals, the most of any single day. Finals will include the men’s basketball, the men’s soccer and the men’s baseball.

The most difficult event to schedule might be surfing. Organizers have blocked out eight days for the event, hoping surf’s up for at least four of them. It’s a four-day competition. “The schedule is subject to change depending on the wave conditions,” organizers said.

1The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics will start some events earlier EXCEPT ________.

    A. the women’s marathon finals B. the men’s triathlon

    C. the women’s softball games D. the swimming finals

2What can we infer from the passage?

    A. The softball game is usually held in the late afternoon.

    B. It’s impossible for athletes to deal with the new schedule.

    C. The baseball game was cancelled at two Olympic Games.

    D. The organizers changed the schedule without consideration.

3The IOC changed the time of the Olympics Games to ________.

    A. beat the summer heat B. meet the needs of athletes

    C. avoid famous competitions D. give athletes time to prepare

4As to the events and awards at the Tokyo Olympics, we can know that ________.

    A. the men’s 10-meter air rifle will be the first event

    B. Aug 8 will be the day with the most gold medals awarded

    C. surfing which is easy to schedule will be a four-day competition

    D. the men’s basketball will take place before “Super Saturday”

Ruby, a l6-year-old girl in Chicago No.1 High School, always looked up to her cousin Wanda, who was two years older than her and was studying in a university. Ruby was the only child in her family, so she regarded Wanda as her “immediate” sister. Wanda was not only beautiful, but also smart. She always had best grades in the exams and she could play several kinds of musical instruments, especially the piano. Therefore, she was very popular in her school and she had a lot of friends. In Ruby's eyes, Wanda was a perfect girl so she considered Wanda as her example. Ruby was still in high school but she wanted to go to the same university as Wanda did. Ruby was even in the same clubs in the same high school as Wanda used to be.

Wanda knew that Ruby looked up to her and she appreciated that. On Christmas Day, Wanda sent Ruby a sweater with her university's logo on it as a gift. Ruby was so happy when she got the sweater. She put it on right away and wore it almost every day.

One day in class, Ruby raised her hand to answer the teacher 's question and the teacher, who had ever been Wanda's head teacher, accidentally called her Wanda. “Oh, I'm sorry, but you just look a little like her,” the teacher said. “I'm so glad," Ruby said. From that day on, Ruby studied harder and harder because Wanda did well in all her subjects. Ruby just wanted to catch up with her.

When college admission results came out, Ruby was so nervous to visit the website to see if she got admitted. She closed her eyes and slowly opened them. She found out that she got accepted!
