二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、What if it there was a simple solution to overcoming loneliness? Would you choose an app that promised to provide firm friendship? A new consumer artificial intelligence (AI) app called Replika is hoping you will. The app’s interface looks just like any other instant messaging app you might be used to, be it Facebook Messenger or a texting client. The only difference is that instead of talking to a friend— or a human, for that matter— you interact with a chatbot that keeps learning all about you.

According to the Eugenia Kuyda, founder of Luka, the company that makes Replika, the AI companion learns about you the more you engage with it over text, eventually developing the ability to imitate your tone. Like any new friend, as it gets to know you, Replika will ask you about your day, and talk to you about your goals and interests.

The idea for Replika first came about after a friend of Kuyda’s died. She wanted to memorialize him somehow and chose to combine the text messages and photos she had saved from him with AI to create a unique bot based on the real person.

“People are willing to disclose more to a virtual human or an AI versus another human being, and that’s what Replika is based on: here’s a bot that is a safe space that you can be totally open and vulnerable (脆弱的) with. You can talk about anything you want, anytime you need it.”

When it comes to Luka’s vision for their product, they don’t see their bots developing a more human appearance. “As for right now, not giving your Replika a body or an appearance is pretty important,” says Kuyda. “People actually have very big imaginations and sometimes it’s better to leave some spaces empty so that you can fill it in with whatever you imagine it to be.”

While Kuyda is convinced that Replika can help people engage more with the world around them by giving them more confidence and eventually introducing them to other people through the app, that’s still a bit of a stretch considering the goal is to create a best friend within your phone.

【1】What is the special feature of Replika?

A.It can pronounce just like users.

B.It can interact with users through texting.

C.It has the interface for users.

D.It expects to learn more about users.

【2】What drove Kuyda to develop Replika?

    A.The death of her friend.

B.The need for keeping some messages secret.

C.The pursuit of comfort from others.

D.The desire for talking with others.

【3】Why does Kuyda refuse to give Replika a more human appearance?

A.To leave more room for Replika’s ability.

B.To empower users to explore their imagination.

C.To make Replika fit in with users.

D.To bring more confidence for users.

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

A.AI will be friendly to humans

B.AI can be lonely in the future

C.AI friends help you get rid of loneliness

D.AI technology is used to solve problems

  • 22、Japan recently introduced the world’s first Dual-Mode Vehicle (DMV), a vehicle that runs both on roads, like a bus, and on rails, like a train.

The unique bus-train vehicle was introduced last month, in the town of Kaiyo, Japan's Tokushima Prefecture. The mini-bus-like vehicle didn't win anyone over with its looks, but it definitely made an impression in terms of practicality. It runs with normal rubber tires on the road, but when it needs to switch to train mode, a pair of metal wheels drop down from the vehicle's underbelly. The front tires are lifted off the track, while the back wheels stay down to drive the vehicle. Switching between road and train modes takes only about 15 seconds.

“This DMV can reach the locals as a bus and carry them onto the railway as well,” Shigeki Miura, CEO of Asa Coast Railway, told Reuters. “Especially in the countryside with an aging population, we expect it to be a very good form of public transport.”

The DMV has been in the works for over ten years, and the government in Tokushima hopes that it will not only improve the lives of locals but also attract tourists curiosity to see the dual-mode vehicle in person.

The dual-mode vehicles, which come in a variety of colors, can carry up to 21 passengers and run at a speed of 60 km/h in train mode, and up to 100 km/h as a bus.

Shigeki Miura is confident that the unique vehicle could help small towns like Kaiyo with an aging and shrinking population, where traditional transportation companies struggle to make money. The vehicles will soon cover part of the coast of Shikoku island, connecting several towns and offering riders breathtaking seaside views.

【1】Why does the Dual-Mode Vehicle attract people?

    A.It has a cute look.

    B.It is very practical.

    C.It is not expensive.

D.It has over two running modes.

【2】What can we infer about DMV's mode switch?

    A.It's difficult to operate.

B.It's fast to complete the switch.

C.It needs to lift the back wheels.

D.It drops down its back metal wheels.

【3】What is the expectation of the government in Tokushima to DMV?

    A.It can carry more passengers.

B.It is competitive in the global market.

C.It is attractive to the locals and tourists.

D.It can be put into use for a long time.

【4】What's Shigeki Miura's attitude to DMV?

    A.Objective.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Positive.

  • 23、   Food waste is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and fruits and vegetables are particularly problematic, as an estimated 52% of harvests go bad before reaching consumers. But one Malaysian company claims to have come up with a simple and effective solution to this problem—a tiny sticker (粘贴标签) that stops fruits spoiling for two weeks.

You’ve probably seen stickers on fruits before, but not like the ones created by Stixfresh. Those common stickers are used only to provide consumers with information about the grower and how the fruit was grown, but Stixfresh has a different purpose. It contains a special, all- natural way that slows down the ripening process, keeping the fruit fresh and juicy for much longer.

Stixfresh are made with 100% organic materials and contain a mixture of ionized (电离) Sodium Chloride and beeswax, which helps slow down the bacterial activity in the fruit, thus delaying the ripening process. The company insists that the stickers are so safe that you can actually eat them.

Stixfresh founder Zhafri Zainudin says that he came up with the idea for the stickers four years ago, after visiting a friend who sold fruit. The man complained about losing money every day due to spoiled fruits, but seemed resigned (顺从的), as he knew there was no way to stop nature taking its course. However, the Malaysian entrepreneur had another idea.

“It got me to thinking. Maybe I couldn’t stop nature, but could I slow it down?” Zainudin writes on his company’s website.

The Malaysian businessman partnered with Selangor University to develop and test his stickers. It took him three years to perfect the manufacturing process and effect of his innovative product.

Originally, Stixfresh stickers were only used to prolong the shelf-life of mangos, but the company later realized that they also worked on other fruits of the same size and with similar texture, like dragon fruit and pears.

【1】What is the problem with fruits and vegetables?

    A.They rot away before sale.

    B.They are wasted by consumers.

C.They aren’t ripe enough before harvests.

D.There are too many of them to be eaten in time.

【2】What is special of the sticker created by Stixfresh?

A.It records the products growing information.

B.It contains information of growing products.

C.It shows how to delay their ripening process.

D.It tells ways to use organic materials properly.

【3】Zhafri Zainudin mentioned his visit to a fruit seller friend to show.

    A.his friend’s poor life

    B.his good relationship with him

C.how he cared about fruit salers

D.how the stickers came into being

【4】Which of the following do Stixfresh stickers go for?

    B.Grapes.

    C.Bananas.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Just as many families do at a point, Catherine chose to add a new family member by adopting a pet. Shortly after her daughter Kate’s birth, Catherine decided she wanted a close bond with a dog for Kate. Thus, Catherine called the dog shelter close by to inquire about adoption. After hearing about the available animals, she chose a Doberman Pinscher. Once they signed adoption papers, they named the dog Khan.

Catherine was hopeful this would provide valuable lessons for her baby, such as sharing, learning to love and responsibility to care for animals. She was looking forward to having the dog join the family.

Hearing of Khan’s rough background, Catherine immediately loved the dog. She was overjoyed to bring this special dog back to her family. Of course, she realized there were risks involved. Well, the obvious risks from bringing a large, potentially dangerous animal to her young baby, Catherine pushed them aside. If she had not adopted Khan, he would have been killed just a week later. So, this was his new life and second chance, and the family was hoping for the best.

Everything began smoothly. They trained Khan during the first few days. However, everything changed on that fourth day when the dog acted completely out of character.

The fateful day began with the usual playtime in the yard. Although baby Kate had her parents watching from a distance, they did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Kate and the new dog had been making a habit of playing out back like this. However, things were different this day.

So what was actually happening out there? The two were not being loud or crazy. They began running through the backyard grass together. Again, Catherine watched the two closely. Surprisingly, things had changed within an instant!
