21、Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The ideals for most philosophical writing are precision, clarity, and the sort of conceptual analysis that leaves no hair un-split.
There is nothing wrong with clarity, precision, and the like — but this isn’t the only way to do philosophy. Outside academic journals, abstract philosophical ideas are often expressed through literature, cinema, and song. There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep.
One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve — they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to wrestle with.
Consider what philosophers call the metaphysics (形而上学) of race — an area of philosophy that explorers the question of whether or not race is real. There are three main positions that you can take on these questions. You might think that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Or you might think of race as socially real, like days of the week or currencies (“social constructionism”). Finally, you might think that races are unreal — that they’re more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵) than they are like Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”).
A great example of a story with social constructionist taking on race is George Schuyler’s novel Black No More. In the book, a Black scientist named Crookman invents a procedure that makes Black people visually indistinguishable from Whites. Thousands of African Americans flock to Crookman’s Black No More clinics and pay him their hard-earned cash to undergo the procedure. White racists can no longer distinguish those people who are “really” White from those who merely appear to be White. In a final episode, Crookman discovers that new Whites are actually a whiter shade of pale than those who were born that way, which kicks off a trend of sunbathing to darken one’s skin-darkening it so as to look more While.
Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with.

22、Giving generously and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others. Yet, why do we have such difficulty accomplishing these things in our relationships? I think people refuse to be generous with others because they fear being used.
For example, my husband and I have family members who only contact us when they need money. We usually accept their requests, but we rarely receive a “thank you”. Most people would say that my husband and I are being used. But when we give, we shouldn’t be giving for the purpose of getting gratitude. Rather, we should be giving because it’s a good thing to do.
Everything that we have, from our ability to wake up each morning to the money in our bank account, is a gift from the world. In return, the world asks us to use these gifts to help others, either by giving them our time or our resources. The good news is that when we live our lives being nice to others, our lives run more smoothly.
If you’re generous, yes, some people will use you. But if you practice being generous, most of your relationships will improve. And at the same time, we should remember to receive gratefully. I truly believe that you cannot say “thank you” enough.
So often we get lazy about expressing gratitude. Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their students. Just because a task is part of someone’s job description doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t thank them for it.
Words of appreciation make others feel good about themselves like nothing else. It’s good for us to say “thank you” because we often need to tell ourselves how lucky we are.
If you are looking for a way to improve your life, I can give you one: Give generously and receive gratefully.

23、 To most Americans ---- and probably most Westerners --- romantic love is the greatest love of all. In fact, romantic love sometimes considered the very definition of love. We often use “love” as shorthand for romantic love, just as we use the word “relationship” without even thinking that we need to point out that we mean “romantic relationship”.
Before I started studying single life, I had no idea why contemporary American views of love were so narrow. Then I spent a long time reading.
When I wrote Single Out, I summarized some of what I learned this way:
From Middle Ages through early modern times, to describe the love for a spouse(配偶) as the greatest love of all would have been sacrilegious. The most special place in anyone’s heart was supposed to be reserved for God. Over the years, many kinds of people and entitles (独立存在物) have been considered deserving of love and affection. They have included spiritual figures and ancestors, immediate and extended family, friends and communities.
As Stephanie Coontz, author of a fascinating book Marriage A History, noted, during 1800s, Westerners believed that love developed slowly out of admiration, respect, and appreciation; therefore, the love one felt for a sweetheart was not seen as qualitatively different from the feeling one might have for a sister , a friend, or even an idea.
The ruling American worldview may well represent one of the narrowest explanations of love ever imagined. Where once the definition of love and affection reached out to family, friends and communities, reached back to ancestors, and reached up to the heavens, now they surround and squeeze just one other person --- sometimes to the point of asphyxiation(窒息).
Is any of this changing? Maybe. More and more people are living single. Those people who do marry are, on the average, getting around to it later in life than ever before. Americans spend more years of their adult lives not married than married. One potential hint of these big changes is that we will start recognizing how much other kinds of people and pursuits matter to us. We may realize, for example, that a life filled with close friendships is a life filled with love. Those of us who are fortunate enough to take and fulfill jobs may feel freer to say that we love our work. And if we are single, maybe we will be able to do so with less risk of being dismissed as using our work as compensation for not having a spouse.

B.Ridiculous.

A.Romantic love doesn’t always come ahead of other loves.
B.Coontz thinks all kinds of loves come from appreciation.
C.That love develops slowly is popular in American society.
D.Americans’ view of love today is only an imagination.
【4】Which of the following statements does the last paragraph support?
A.More and more Americans want to be single.
