  • 21、When Liz Dixon-Spain got married in 1967, there was only one place where she wanted to hold celebrations. That was her parents’ garden with the beautiful beech tree overlooking the festivities (庆典).

【1】 The perfect ceremony left a lasting impression on her.

【2】 Her two sisters also celebrated their weddings next to the tree. The beech has been a constant presence in her family’s lives. It has been part of all of her family memories because they all happened around the tree.

When she was a child, Liz often played around the tree and enjoyed watching it come to life as a “home to generations of wildlife”. After her marriage ended, she moved back to her childhood home, where she has been living ever since. She used to open up the garden to the public as part of the national garden scheme. 【3】 “Looking at it from inside the house is fantastic, but to stand right underneath feels extraordinary,” said one visitor.

Liz has four grown-up sons, who spent their childhood playing on the grass in front of the tree. Her children and eight grandchildren live across the UK, in London, Scotland, Southport and Stamford. However, they often come here to meet up. 【4】

One of her grandchildren, Frank,10, lives in Hackney, East London, but visits Liz often.

【5】 One of them begins: “Through the pebble filled driveway, through the old wooden gate, lay a paradise for nature.”

D.Visitors were impressed when they caught sight of the tree.

G.Holding wedding receptions in the garden has become her family tradition.

  • 22、When it comes to problem solving, many of us have heard of the skills of the crow (乌鸦) in Aesop’s Fables (《伊索寓言》).

In the story, a thirsty crow comes across a bottle of water, but the water level (水平面) is out of its reach. The bird then drops small stones into it until the water level rises enough for the bird to drink.

“Oh, it’s just a fable,” you may think. After all, it’s hard to imagine birds knowing about “problem solving”.

But new research has found that crows’ brains may sometimes be better than those of 6-year-old children.

In a recent experiment, US scientist Corina Logan and her team caught six crows to test them. There were two tubes (试管) of water, one wide and the other narrow (窄的). Each crow was given four stones, enough to help them get the water in the narrow tube, but not the wide one.

Surprisingly, the crows dropped all or most of the stones into the narrower tube and got the food reward! They had found out the cause-and-effect relationship.Using such brains, crows are making their lives easier. For example, some crows in cities have learned to use road traffic for breaking nuts, National Geographic News reported.

But how are their wits (智力) compared to humans’? Logan’s team did another experiment, this time on both crows and children.

Here, the crows and children had to choose between two sets of tubes.

With the red set, when they dropped a stone into a wide tube, the water level raised in a connected narrow tube that contained food.

The blue set of tubes, however, had no connection between them. So dropping a stone in the wide tube did not cause the water level to rise in the narrow tube.

Children aged 7 to 10 were able to learn the rule. Children aged 4 to 6, however, failed.

Five of the six crows failed the test. But Kitty, a 6-month-old crow, passed it. She put all or most of the stones into the red tube.

So, could a bird be more clever than a kindergartner? Don’t be too quick to say no.

【1】Why is Aesop’s Fables mentioned in the beginning of the article?

    A. To introduce the idea that crows are smart.

    B. To show that fables about crows are wrong.

    C. To explain why crows can solve problems.

    D. To prove that crows can be better than babies at problem solving.

2What have Logan’s team found out from their recent experiments?

    A. Crows prefer to get their food reward from wider tubes.

    B. Crows are able to understand or learn cause and effect relationships.

    C. Crows can easily recognize the tubes with a food reward inside.

    D. Some crows even make use of road traffic to help them break nuts.

3What can we learn from the experiment on crows and children?

    A. Five of the six crows threw stones into the red tube.

    B. Children aged 6 did better than children aged 4.

    C. One crow passed the test while the younger children didn’t.

    D. Some crows proved to be more clever than children aged 10.

  • 23、Scientists recently discovered that pictures on cave walls at Creswell Crags are the oldest known in Great Britain. But they didn’t find out in the usual way.

Archaeologists (考古学家) often date cave art with a process called radiocarbon dating. The technique can measure the age of carbon found in charcoal (木炭) drawings or painted pictures. Carbon is an element found in many things, including charcoal and even people. But in this case, there was no paint or charcoal to test. People carved the pictures of animals and figures into the rock using stone tools. The scientists had an “aha!” moment when they noticed small rocks stuck to the top of the drawings. The small rocks must have formed after the drawings were made.

“It is rare to be able to scientifically date rock art,” said Alistair Pike, an archaeological scientist at Britain’s University of Bristol. “We were very fortunate that some of the engravings (雕刻) were covered by stalagmites (石笋).”

When a test proved that the stalagmites formed 12,800 years ago, the scientists knew the art underneath them had to be at least that old. And some of the animals shown are now extinct — another clue that the art is quite old.

The artists came to Creswell Crags. This place is one of the farthest points north reached by our ancient ancestors during the Ice Age. At that time, much of the North Sea was dry, so people could move about more easily.

Some tools and bones found there are 13,000 to 15,000 years old. They show that the travelers hunted horses, reindeer, and arctic hares. Their artwork is similar to art in France and Germany. It tells scientists that the Creswell Crags artists must have had a close connection to peoples several thousand kilometers away — another important evidence of understanding how humans spread out across the world.

【1】How did the scientists feel when they found rocks on the top of the drawings?

    A.Fairly confusing.

    B.Pleasantly surprised.

    C.Completely satisfied.

    D.Extremely proud.

【2】Why do scientists say the art is quite old?

A.Some pictures were covered by stalagmites formed long ago.

B.The majority of the animals carved into the stone are extinct.

C.The cave is one of the farthest points in the world.

D.The art was carved into the stone with stone tools.

【3】What can scientists learn about by studying the cave art?

A.How ancient people crossed the North Sea.

B.Why some of the animals have died out.

C.How humans spread out across the world.

D.What ancient people had for food at that time.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Cave Art About Animals Is Most Beautiful

B.Cave Art Is Found In the Usual Way

C.Cave Art Turns Out to Be Britain’s Oldest

D.Cave Art Has a Great Influence on Britain

  • 24、Children are naturally curious about the world around them. When Chase Hansen was only 4 years old, he encountered homeless people for the first time while shopping with his dad at an outdoor mall in Salt Lake City, Nevada.   It’s no wonder that he had a lot of questions.

“Chase looked at me and said, ‘Dad, who are these people? Why don’t they have a place to stay?’” John Hansen recalled. “After I explained that they had run into hard times and were homeless, I knew that we were looking at an educational opportunity. My son wanted to help them.”

The father and son convinced a local Jamba Juice store to donate more than 100 smoothies(果汁)and the pair gave them out to homeless people in a park.

After that, they came up with an even better idea. “I wanted a way to get to know people better, “Chase said. ”So, my dad and I decided to start taking some of the homeless people we’d met out to lunch.

“A lot of people walk right past homeless people and don’t see the person,” he said. “I know now that they’re people just like us. They want to make a connection and not feel so alone in the world.”

Hundreds of lunches later, they run a self-funded charity called Project Empathy(同情)to help inspire others to meet and to create relationships with the homeless people in their neighborhoods. The organization provides a list of resources that can help homeless people with food, housing and employment.

John said that what started as a way to spend quality time with his son has turned into a passion for both of them. “Chase and I realized that the country needed an army of people to practice empathy, and that by doing something as simple as taking a homeless person to lunch, we could maybe inspire others to do the same, ”he said. “Any time you can help to give someone a voice, it’s empowering.
