二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Marios Giannakou had already climbed to the top of Mt. Olympus 50 times, but he says his 51st trip is the most memorable and meaningful. That's because he spent more than 10 hours climbing the mountain with a woman with disability, Eleftheria Tosiou, on his back.

Eleftheria is 22 years old and has always dreamed of seeing the peak of Mt. Olympus but she's been unable to make the hike by herself due to a disability that affects her mobility. So, when she shared this dream with Marios, he stepped up to help her make her dream come true.

Marios didn’t need to train for the hike, because he has an incredible athletic (运动的,健壮的) record. From running a 93-mile race in Antarctica (which he won!) to hiking more than 160 miles in the AI Marmoum Desert, he was already in shape and ready for the new challenge. About a month after the two met and began planning their adventure, they were off!

Eleftherla rode on Marios' back in a special carrier that is designed specifically for long hikes. The pair were joined by eight guides and they all stopped to make camp and rest about halfway through before finishing up the more than 10-hour hike to the highest peak, which is more than 9, 000 feet up. Eleftheria was obviously excited to be able to live out her dream, but Marios seemed to have been equally affected by the adventure. He said, “For me, all international races, the medals and the achievements so far, mean little compared to that goal.”

The pair, and their guides, successfully made their descent (下降) back down Mt. Olympus, and have an incredible story to tell. After it was all over, Marios said of the accomplishment, “There is nothing more real than the dream.” Hopefully, this means that this hike was just the first of many adventures they will go on together.

【1】Why was Marios’51st climb different from the previous?

A.He spent longer climbing to the top.

B.He had a special training for this climb.

C.He made it to the top with physical disability.

D.He carried a disabled woman to the top.

【2】What can we infer from what Marios said in Paragraph 5?

A.Marios learned more from this trip than before.

B.Marios overcame the difficulty he had never experienced.

C.Marios thought the trip was the best thing he had done.

D.Marios believed dreams couldn't be divorced from reality.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe Marios?

    A.Ambitious and wise.

    B.Athletic and helpful.

    C.Talented and generous.

    D.Cooperative and professional.

【4】What does Marios's story intend to tell us?

A.Nothing is impossible for a willing mind.

    B.Technology is power.

C.Two heads are better than one.

D.Little people can make a big difference.

  • 22、“A Long Walk Home”-----life as Eli Reed saw it

American photographer and photojournalist Eli Reed has been documenting “life as I saw it” for more than 40 years. His career retrospective(回顾), “Eli Reed: A Long Walk Home”, is an extraordinary search of beauty while recording hardship. With a heart of love, Reed uses a style that uncovers humanity at every turn. According to Reed, “A Long Walk Home” is about what it means to be a human being. It all began with a photo he took of his mother and his memory of her smile.

Raised in New Jersey, reed was originally a painter. Primarily self-taught in photography, he became a freelance photographer in 1970. after producing some impressive photos that drew much attention, he joined the famous company Magnum Photos---the first black photographer invited to do so.

His photos are remarkable in their lack of judgment of the people or the situations he comes across. In Beirut, Lebanon, a man removes a tree branch from a car in a recently bombed parking lot. An old man wrapped in a sheet plays a drum in front of a sign reading “God Is the Way” while National Guardsmen lift their guns during a war in Miami. A young boy upside down with his legs in the air in a Kenyan refugee camp, his determined look faces the camera. In Harlem, New York, a group of laughing children take over an abandoned car, using it as a jungle gym.

Where another photographer might have focused on the sobriety of these situations. Reed’s camera smiles. His images show how humans cope, rise above, and carry on. This is what gives A Long Walk Home” its power. Considering the places Reed has been to, there are very few photos of guns or obvious violence. Instead, Reed  focuses on the varied human responses to hardship.

We smile along with Reed in a gesture of compassion and solidarity. We recognize our fellow human beings.

  • 23、How far would you go to make a good impression at a new job? A college student in Alabama walked 32 kilometers in the dark to get to his new job.

The story begins with Walter Carr's car breaking down the night before starting a new job. Carr was unable to find a ride. So, he figured out how long it would take to walk from his house to the job in Pelham-32 kilometers away. He left at midnight so that he could make it to the customer's house by 8:00 am the next morning.

Pelham police saw him walking along a highway at 4-00 am. So, they stopped to see if he needed help. After hearing his story, they took him to a restaurant for breakfast and then to a church where he could safely wait until 8:00 am. The police then took Carr to the home of customer Jenny Lamey. Lamey said that even though Carr had just walked the entire night, he refused her offer to rest. He just wanted to start working. While he worked, he talked with the customer, telling her how much he liked her kitchen.

Jenny Lamey later wrote this on Facebook:"I just can't tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey. He is kind and cheerful and he has big dreams! He is hardworking and tough. " She then started a GoFundMe page to help Walter with money to get his car fixed. When the CEO of Bellhops, Luke Marklin, learned of Carr's story, he drove from Tennessee to Alabama to give Walter his own 2014 Ford Escape.

Walter Carr's story touched many others around the United States. Within a few days, people gave over $ 73 ,000 to his GoFundMe page. Carr has decided to give a part of the donations to the Birmingham Education Foundation. And he has received more offers for jobs and scholarships for schools.

  • 24、It has always been assumed that traffic noise is a problem unique to animals. But a new study by Ghotbi-Ravandi, a botanist at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, has revealed that plants suffer too.

Scientists have previously suspected that plants may be able to sense sound waves as they are struck by them. A number of experiments have confirmed this in recent years——plants continuously affected by ultrasound(超声波) in the lab have shown a range of adverse responses including the expression of stress-related genes, abnormal growth and reduced sprouting(发芽) of seeds.

Yet blasting(轰击) plants with ultrasound is not the same as growing them in the presence of actual traffic noise. To this end, Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi decided to set up an experiment to study precisely this question.

Working with a team of colleagues, Dr Ghotbi-Rayandi grew two species in his lab. The plants were grown from seed and allowed to mature for two months in the same space before they were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to 73 decibels(分贝) of traffic noise for16 hours a day. The other group was left to grow in silence. After 15 days had passed, samples were taken from the youngest fully expanded leaves on every plant in the experiment and studied.

None of the plants exposed to the traffic noise did well. Analysis of their leaves revealed that all of them were suffering. The chemical compounds indicating stress in plants were found at much higher levels in the samples exposed to the traffic noise. The team also found that a range of hormones normally associated with healthy growth and development in plants were present at significantly reduced levels in the plants exposed to the noise.

His findings make it clear that, though plants lack ears, the impact generated by the noise of traffic still bothers them enough to trigger strong stress responses. The next question is whether all noise pollution affects all species in the same way.

【1】What does the underlined word “adverse” mean in the second paragraph?

    A.expected.

    B.passive.

    C.negative.

    D.opposite.

【2】What can we know about the plants exposed to traffic noise?

    A.Their seeds failed to sprout.

    B.They have high-level hormones.

    C.They contain more stress-related compounds.

    D.They barely have expanded leaves.

【3】It is possible that the next step of the study is to ________.

    A.reduce noise pollution

    B.experiment with other plants

    C.publish the findings

    D.confirm previous assumptions

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?

A.Noise Pollution Has to Be Reduced

    B.Plant Protection Is Urgently Needed

C.Plant Growth Is Prevented by Ultrasound

D.Plants Are Badly Affected by Traffic
