21、On a clear night, the sky is a wonderful thing. Is there life out there somewhere? Is there another place like Earth where life might exist? If so, where is it? And how far away is it?
Recently, the Kepler spacecraft found “22b”, a planet about six hundred light years away. It is the first planet in a “habitable zone” outside the solar system. That means the planet orbits(环绕) a star like our sun, but it is not too close to it, nor too far away. Because of this position, Kepler-22b might have water, one of the main things needed for life. The newly-discovered planet is about two and a half times larger than the Earth. It is closer to its star than we are to the Sun, but 22b’s sun is smaller than ours, and doesnt produce as much heat. Scientific instruments show the new planet could be made of gases, rocks or some kinds of liquids.
The Kepler spacecraft was named in honor of Johannes Kepler, the seventeenth century German astronomer. It was designed to examine a small part of the Milky Way galaxy(星系)and search for places like the Earth. It was made to inspect over 150,000 stars and measure how bright they are. It looks to see if a star’s brightness gets less over a short time.
If a planet passes between Kepler and the star, it blocks out part of the light. That is what suggested to scientists that there is at least one planet orbiting the star. The instruments on Kepler show the new planet as a small, black dot moving across its sun. An important part of the Kepler experiment is on the Earth. After the spacecraft gathers information, scientists use the telescopes on the ground.
Scientists have found over 2,300 new planets since Kepler was launched. Most are much larger, but it is the new planet’s distance from its star that is important. For life to possibly exist there, the planet’s temperature must not be too hot or too cold.
【1】What can we learn about Kepler-22b?
A. Water must have existed on it.
B. It takes humans about 600 years to get there.
C. It is made of gases, rocks and plenty of liquids.
D. It is the first planet in outer space where life may survive
【2】The Kepler spacecraft was sent into space to
A. show honor to Johannes Kepler
B. observe the changes of a star’s brightness
C. look for Earth-like planets in the Milky Way galaxy
D. measure the brightest star among 150.000 stars
【3】In Paragraph 4 the author mainly tells us
A. how the Kepler system works
B. if the Kepler system sees a new planet
C. how the Kepler system shows a new planet
D. why an important part of the Kepler system remains on the Earth
【4】What can we infer from the passage?
A. Life may exist on the new planet in another form.
B. It is colder on the new planet because its sun is smaller.
C. Life can’t exist on planets which are much larger than the Earth.
D. The new planet’s distance from its star decides on the possibility of life existence.

23、 With coronavirus (新冠肺炎)outbreaks at different stages around the world, in many countries lockdowns are being carefully eased off while urging citizens to keep on practicing the social distancing rules. Singapore is trying a new way of carrying it out--a robot dog.
The government has arranged Spot, a yellow and black robotic dog made by Boston Dynamics Company, at one local park. The same robot has been previously seen dancing to hit song “Uptown Funk.”However, 2020 is an extremely difficult year and the company is trying to assist the national coronavirus-control effort. In turn, the job has been handed over to Spot.
The four-legged robot dog patrols(巡查) the park and broadcasts a pre-recorded message to encourage visitors to observe safe distancing measures. As it walks around the park, the dog says in a female voice, "Let's keep Singapore healthy. For your own safety and for those around you, please stand at least one meter apart. Thank you.
Spot is one of the world's most advanced robots and unlike wheeled robots, it is capable of going pretty much anywhere a dog can go and can walk up to three miles per hour over different areas, making it ideal for operation in public parks and gardens. Furthermore, it is remotely controlled and has cameras with 360-degree vision and analytic tools to scan the surroundings and help officials estimate the number of people gathering in the park.
For now, the pilot project is currently set to run in a limited trial for two weeks at one park during off-peak(非高峰)hours. But if all goes well, authorities will consider expanding the program to improve enforcement(强制)of social distance throughout on Singapore
Spot is also being used in other ways during the public health crisis beyond just patrolling a park. The government says it's also using Spot in another capacity- at a local isolation facility where the robot helps bring medicine to patients.
【1】What do we know about Spot in the passage?

C.It’s a wheeled robot that can walk anywhere.
D.It's a robot newly invented during the pandemic(流行病).
【2】How does Spot carry out its duty in the park?
A.It enforces people to follow the rules. B.It warns visitors against littering anywhere.

【3】What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4?
A.The robot dog's basic equipment. B.Some smart features of the robot.

24、My father’ s family is not a musical family. They are a family of words. My brother has my father’s dark hair, his love of a good argument. I take after my mother. From her I inherited a curious nature, a sense of adventure, bright red hair. I did not, contrary to her hopes, inherit a talent for the piano. That fact was established beyond doubt after unsuccessful attempts to draw music from me.
The piano lessons began when I was four. My mother was convinced that I would be a child Mozart. She found the ideal teacher--Madame Oblenka, a strict Russian woman, whose pursed lips were enough to frighten a wild horse into submission. Madame Oblenka, who expected a little Mozart, was not very delighted to find a little girl banging her fists on the keys.
I tried to please her. “Feel the music,” she urged. I “felt” it and winced (退避) my ear--for what is more unpleasant than a series of wrong notes played continuously? She “felt” my music, too, which is why she always left with an angrier expression than when she came.
Once, when I was ten, I managed to record one of my own rehearsals (练习). In order to escape my practice sessions, I would close myself behind the door of the piano room, put on the tape recording, and read until the tape had finished. That method worked for a week, until my mother began to wonder why I always missed the same B-sharp. She knocked on the door, and, receiving no answer, came in to check on me and found that I had fallen asleep while the tape of my performance played on and on.
I was twelve when my parents finally acknowledged that my hidden talent was not about to emerge any time soon. My mother, refusing to admit defeat, told me to pick another instrument. “Choose anything you want, Honey,” she said, assuming that freedom of choice would inspire devotion. I thought long and hard and chose the drums. My parents, sensitive to noise, would be less than overjoyed by a daily bombardment of playing. I imagined my father in his study, cotton wads in his ears.
I worked my way through several other instruments before my mother hit on another idea. Maybe I wasn’t meant to be an instrumentalist. Realizing that drama might be more suited to my talents, Mom took me to a drama teacher. However, he put me backstage, painting scenery. Once I recovered from my sense of injury, I realized the wisdom of his choice. I loved the active, practical backstage world, and I discovered that I had a knack for constructing and painting. I loved the challenge of taking our scanty (贫乏) supplies and using them to make something beautiful. Imagining a scene and then seeing it emerge before me--this, to me, was close to magic.
I’m a sculptor now, and every day I experience afresh the joy of being fully absorbed in the act of artistic creation. It’s a wonderful, blissful (乐而忘忧) feeling. I realize that my parents, in their misguided attempts to interest me in music, were trying to give me this feeling. And now I feel grateful. Perhaps they went about it in the wrong way, but their hearts were in the right place.
