二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、If we are to help students develop reading skills in a foreign language, it is important to understand what is involved in the reading process itself. If we have a clear idea of how “good readers” read, either in their own or a foreign language, this will enable us to decide whether particular reading techniques are likely to help learners or not.

In considering the reading process, it is important to distinguish between two quite separate activities: reading for meaning (or “silent reading”) and reading aloud. Reading for meaning is the activity we normally engage in when we read books, newspapers, road signs, etc.; it is what you are doing as you read this text. It involves looking at sentences and understanding the message they convey, in other words “making sense” of a written text. It doesn’t normally involve saying the words we read, not even silently inside our heads; there are important reasons for this, which are outlined below.

Reading aloud is a completely different activity; its purpose is not just to understand a text but to convey the information to someone else. It is not an activity we engage in very often outside the classroom; common examples are reading out parts of a newspaper article to a friend, or reading a notice to other people who can’t see it. Obviously, reading aloud involves looking at a text, understanding it and also saying it. Because our attention is divided between reading and speaking, it is a much more difficult activity than reading silently; we often stumble and make mistakes when reading aloud in our own language, and reading aloud in a foreign language is even more difficult.

When we read for meaning, we do not need to read every letter or every word, nor even every word in each sentence. This is because, provided the text makes sense, we can guess much of what it says as we read it.

【1】The passage is mainly about ____________.

    A. reading skills B. silent reading

    C. reading processes   D. reading aloud

【2】The underlined word “stumble” in Paragraph 3 means ____________.

    A. step over something and fall

    B. repeat something or pause for too long

    C. walk with heavy movements

    D. speak in a fluent and confident way

【3】 We can infer from the passage that the author will continue to ____________.

    A. discuss in detail how to read aloud

    B. introduce some more reading activities

    C. tell how good readers read in their own language

    D. explain why we needn’t say the words when reading for meaning

【4】 We can conclude that ____________.

    A. reading silently is easier than reading aloud

    B. to understand a sentence, you have to read all the words in it

    C. silent reading involves looking at a text and saying the words silently to yourself

    D. there’s no difference between reading in one’s own language and in a foreign one

  • 23、   “The comic waist challenge”, in which netizens try to imitate a comic character's pose with their legs on a chair and the upper body dropping to the ground, almost bending the waist in half, has become the latest craze to hit China's social media.

The topic has obtained hundreds of millions views on Weibo with many net users posting photos of the challenging pose to show how sexy and flexible they are.

Meanwhile some netizens argue that it is just an expansive gesture of yoga pose. So some people consult the doctors if the gesture is very dangerous. Medical experts have warned net users of the seemingly harmless yoga pose, as it may lead to damage to one's vertebrae by causing muscle strain and increasing the risk of lumbar degenerative disease.

The new challenge follows a series of similar controversial Chinese body image trends including the A4 waist challenge (measuring women's waists against a piece of A4 paper which is 21 centimeters wide), the belly button challenge (reaching one's belly button from behind), and the coin collarbone (balancing coins on people's collarbones for as long as they can) which faced heavy criticism worldwide on social media.

Women in China have long associated being beautiful with being skinny, but a desire to be thin is often taken to the extreme, with harmful effects on health and self-esteem - a situation not unique to China.

Although the opinions of the issue vary, maybe the change of the attitudes towards it is just over the horizon. Rejecting body anxiety is more than just a slogan. Many workout-obsessed women are increasingly realizing that no matter how hard they try, they won't be supermodels, and acknowledging that figures can vary due to a number of factors. This is an important step on their path to self-acceptance. Being healthy and maintaining the spiritual well-being have become the new pursuits for many.

【1】According to paragraphs 1 and 2, what do you know about the comic waist challenge?

A.It leads a trend among netizens.

B.It's an easy comic character's pose.

    C.It's a harmless yoga pose.

D.It's a symbol of the beauty of body image.

【2】Which of the following is NOT the Chinese body image trends according to the passage?

    A.The A4 waist challenge.

    B.The belly button challenge.

    C.The coin collarbone.

    D.The finely chiseled nose.

【3】It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.women in China prefer following trends

B.all women in China are desperate to be thin

C.the pursuit of beauty has nothing to do with our health

D.many women in China care more about their health than beauty now

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.The body image trends — a pursuit of Chinese women

B.The comic waist challenge — a slap in the face

C.The attitudes of Chinese towards beauty

    D.The body anxiety nowadays

  • 24、   Stephen Hawking was regarded as one of the most brilliant physicists in history. His work on the origins and structure of the universe, from the Big Bang to black holes, changed the field greatly. His best-selling books also appealed to a number of readers.

Stephen Hawking had a challenging life. He was born in England on Jan.8, 1942-300years to the day after the death of the astronomer Galileo Galilei. He attended University College, Oxford, where he studied physics, despite his father’s urging to focus on medicine. Hawking went on to Cambridge to research cosmology.

In early 1963, just before his 21st birthday, Hawking suffered from a serious disease more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was not expected to live more than two years. Completing his doctor’s degree did not appear likely. Yet, Hawking had overcome the great difficulties, not only attaining his Ph. D. but also building new roads into the understanding of the universe in the decades since.

Hawking continued at Cambridge after his graduation, serving as a research fellow and later as a professional fellow. In 1974, he was inducted(正式就职)into the Royal Society, a worldwide fellowship of scientists. In 1979, he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, the most famous academic chair in the world.

As the disease spreadHawking became less mobile and began using a wheelchair. Talking grew more challenging and, in 1985, an emergency tracheotomy(气管切开术)caused his total loss of speech. A speech-generating device was constructed at Cambridge, combined with a software program, serving as his electronic voice and allowing Hawking to select his words by moving the muscles in his cheek. Hawking died on March 14, 2018.

1What greatly influenced the field Stephen Hawking studied

    A.Stephen Hawking’s best-selling books.

B.His research on the Big Bang and black holes.

A.A research on time. B.A subject of medicine.

C.A study about universe. D.A project in Cambridge.

3What happened to Stephen Hawking in early 1963?

A.He became world famous. B.He achieved his doctor’s degree.

C.He was badly affected by a serious disease D.He built new roads into the understanding of the universe.
