  • 22、For more and more young Chinese professionals, the first day back at work after the Lunar New Year holiday is the day they quit.

The period after the Lunar New Year holiday, also known as Spring Festival, often sees Chinese workers on the move. This year, the number looking for new opportunities is supposed to be especially high.

Mr. Zhu, a 27-year-old Beijing native, is one of the young workers looking for a better deal. “Salary is a big concern for me and I need a job that pays more, and my department can’t provide good career development for me,” he said.

An online survey by Zhaopin.com, a leading job-hunting website, provides further details on why China’s young white-collar workers are so keen to move on.

Low salaries are the biggest concern for 62% of the job-hunters, and overtime and a wide mismatch between low salaries and high housing costs are also the complaints. Two-thirds of them said they had to work at home after office hours, and a full 95% said they felt they were under heavy pressure because of the housing payment or rent.

The survey also found that what was seen as a “good job” has changed. For the generation born in the 1970s, high salary and status is the key. For the generation born after 1980, work-life balance and respect in the office are also important.

Zhao Bin, a 28-year-old woman who earns over 7,000 yuan a month working at a public relations company in Shanghai, said she would wait until the Lunar New Year to change her job. “My salary is OK for me, but I am working like crazy. So I want to find something comfortable, like being an English teacher in training schools.”

1Mr. Zhu is looking for a new job because ________.

    A. he was fired before the Lunar New Year holiday

    B. he was promised a better job

    C. he wants a job better in salary and in development

    D. he was advised to do so

2Which of the following can best take the place of the underlined words “a wide mismatch”?

    A. a big gap   B. a lost game

    C. a hot debate   D. a failed marriage

3The writer uses the example of Zhao Bin to prove that ________.

    A. salary is the first concern for people who change jobs

    B. young people are under pressure of high housing prices

    C. young people tend to value work-life balance

    D. teacher has become a good job for Chinese youth

4The article is intended to ________.

    A. encourage Chinese white-collar workers to change jobs

    B. present a social phenomenon and explain its causes

    C. carry out an online survey to readers

    D. compare different reasons why people quit jobs

  • 23、   Working hard comes naturally to me. The company I work for hired me as a claims researcher and in one year promoted me to head of the Northeast Region Follow-Up Team.

“When are you going to finish?” My husband Joe said as he climbed into bed. “In a few minutes,” I replied. My track record offered Joe little reason to believe me. Finishing was always just a moment or two away. Then after I knew he was sound asleep, I’d gather my paperwork and move to the kitchen table and work for a few more hours.

Somewhere along the way, I found my enthusiasm for living was replaced with hard boring work that robbed me of both peace and pleasure. As the company expanded, my responsibility grew heavier every day.

Resigning would end the madness and Joe encouraged me to do so daily “Just do it, Annie. Quit. You’re heading for a break down.”

One day an email appeared on my computer screen. When I opened it, the words “Administrative assistant for senior vice president” caught my eye. No, I thought. They’d think I was crazy. Who in their right mind would stop back to a secretarial position from a management position?

At home that evening my interest in the new job persisted. I had ten years of experience as an executive secretary long before I ever arrived at the company.

The next morning I told my boss I intended to apply for the job. “You’re in for a huge salary cut, and you’ll lose your bonus,” he said, “You’re a leader, Annmarie, not a follower. How is it that you think this makes any kind of sense? You’re crazy.”

“Not yet,” I said “But if I stay in this position much longer, I’m pretty sure I’ll end up that way.”

Admittedly, the manager of human resources was shocked too, but from a budgetary standpoint it’s hard to say no to someone who’s asking for a salary cut and a decrease in benefits. That’s pretty much a novelty(新鲜事) you don’t run into every day.

I closed the door to my office that last day with very few regrets about leaving my management position. By the end of my first day in the new position I knew I had made the right decision. No office, staff, salary, or bonus check can ever replace this new feeling of waking up every morning and actually wanting to go to work. When I leave at the end of the day, I take nothing with me but my desire to come back tomorrow knowing that I am respected and appreciated.

My husband always tells me I can’t put a price on peace of mind. It looks like my path to peace turned up none too soon!

【1】What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A.The author used to stay up.

B.The author used to be a liar.

    C.The author liked working crazily.

    D.The author had trouble finishing.

【2】What is the main reason why the author decided to change her job?

A.She was in poor health and couldn’t stay up any longer.

B.She had an urge to make some changes in her lifestyle.

C.She was not qualified for her current job.

    D.She wanted to live independently.

【3】What does the manager of human resources think of the author’s job changing?

    A.It was often seen.

    B.It was against his will.

    C.It was unexpected but acceptable.

    D.It was bad news.

  • 24、How to save planet earth

Have you ever held a product in your hands and considered the existential weight of your purchase? Beyond each price tag hides a ripple effect. It expands from soil to water ways, grocery aisle to kitchen plates, factories to fulfillment centers and mail slots to landfills. This global impact has become less hidden in the past decade, and ignoring the people downstream from us has grown increasingly difficult.

We’re more aware than ever of the mark our consumption leaves on planet Earth, which now sustains nearly 8 billion people. Somehow, humans are still pumping more than 30 gig a tons of carbon dioxide(CO2)per year into the atmosphere, despite the mountain of evidence that CO2 is the top contributor to greenhouse gases causing global warming. 【1】We know we need to do better, but we feel helpless and overwhelmed. Let’s call this the eco-essential crisis; it applies on a deeply personal level for most environmentally aware humans, and on a global scale.

Climate journalist and author Tatiana Schlossberg says even a simple trip to the supermarket can feel paralyzing in 2021. “I want to buy the local thing, but it’s not organic. Or, maybe it’s in a plastic box,” she says. In her 2019 book Inconspicuous Consumption, she ventures way beyond the store aisle and into the web of less apparent ways that humans are damaging Earth. For example, your internet use is tied to extensive carbon emissions and energy consumption. 【2】 The world is more complicated than that.

In fact, being a good citizen on planet Earth with climate concerns, you’ve likely asked or agonized over this question: What should I do? 【3】 So, we took this question to five people who have immersed their careers, research and writing in the realities of climate science.

One of their most consistent insights may surprise you: Consumer responsibility misses the mark. “One of the major failings of the environmental movement is having everyone focus on these small things that everyone can do.” says Ayana Elizabeth Johnson-a marine biologist and co-host of the podcast How to Save a Planet. 【4】 There are just more meaningful and long-lasting ways to expend your energy in the climate fight. Most of them involve organization and collective action.

“Individuals join together to collectively have far more power changing the system than they can as individuals,” says Anthony Leiserowitz, director of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.

A.That doesn’t mean it’s none of your business.

B.these experts propose other key steps that every human can take toward a better future.

C.Similar challenge apply to use of plastics and consumption of meat and other goods.

D.Part of the challenge with the environmental movement is the astonishing list of things we need to change.

E.The solution to this problem, however, is not for you to stop using the internet, according to Schlossberg.

F.It’s easy to get lost in the storm of supposed answers around social media, the latest data sets and “ego-friendly” marketing campaigns.
