二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A black hole is created when a large star burns out. Like our sun, stars are unbelievably hot furnaces (熔炉) that burn their own matter as fuel. When most of the fuel is used up, the star begins to die.

The death of a star is not a quiet event. First, there is a huge explosion. As its outer layer is blasted off into space, the dying star shines as brightly as a billion suns.

After the explosion, gravity pulls in what’s left of the star. As the outside of the star sinks toward the center, the star gets smaller and smaller. The material the star is made of becomes tightly packed together. A star is so dense that a teaspoon of matter from it weighs billion of pounds.

The more the star shrinks, the stronger the gravity inside it becomes. Soon the star is very tiny, and the gravity pulling it in is unbelievably strong. In fact, the gravity is so strong that it even pulls light into the star! Since all the light is pulled in, none can flee. The star becomes black when there is no light. Then a black hole is born!

That’s what we know about black holes. What we don’t know is this: What happens inside a black hole after the star has been squeezed into a tiny ball? Does it keep getting smaller and smaller forever? Such a possibility is hard to imagine.

But if the black hole doesn’t keep shrinking, what happens to it? Some scientists think black holes are like doorways to another world. They say that as the star disappears from our universe, it goes into another universe. In other words, a black hole in our universe could turn into a “white hole” in a different universe. As the black hole swallows light, the white hole shines brightly — somewhere else. But where? A different place, perhaps, or a different time — many years in the past or future.

Could you travel through a black hole? Right now, no. Nothing we know of could go into a black hole without being crushed. So far the time being, black holes must remain a mystery.

Black holes are a mystery — but that hasn’t stopped scientists from dreaming about them. One scientist suggested that in the future we might make sure of the power of black holes. They would supply all of Earth’s energy needs, with plenty to spare. Another scientist wondered if a black hole could someday be used to swallow earthly waste — a sort of huge waste disposal in the sky!

1What do we know about stars in the universe?

A.When a star begins to die, there’s no fuel left in it.

B.After the explosion, a star gets as small as a teaspoon.

C.A star explodes when it dies and then becomes smaller and smaller.

D.A star gets smaller and smaller because the outer layer of a star sinks toward the center.

2Which of the following doesn’t help produce a black hole?

A.The dying star shines very brightly. B.The light can’t go out of the star.

C.The gravity inside the star is very strong. D.The star becomes very tiny and dense.

3What can we know from the passage?

A.A star will blast and die when it lacks fuel to support its burning.

B.Man can never travel through a black hole but can make use of its power.

C.A black hole can swallow everything because it becomes smaller all the time.

D.Scientists have found that a black hole goes into another universe and becomes a white hole.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.A New Scientific Discovery: Black Holes B.How Do Black Holes Come into Being?

C.What Are Black Holes? D.Travel Through A Black Hole

  • 22、The expression“a thirst for knowledge" may soon have a new meaning for millions of people who have no way to get clean water. Researchers have developed a book with specially treated pages that can turn dirty water into clean and drinkable water. They say their invention could improve the lives of many in the developing world.

About 700 million people around the world are at risk of disease or even death because their drinking water is not clean. The water is polluted by harmful bacteria.

The book contains 25 pages. Each page is about one millimeter thick. The pages contain very small particles (微粒) of silver. The pages can be used as filters(过滤器)to remove harmful microorganisms(微生物) that can pollute drinking water. The filter kills the organisms that pass through it.

Pictures on the pages show the dangers of dirty water and how to use the book for those unable to read. The pages are made of filter paper. They are designed to be torn from the book. Water can be poured through the paper to be cleaned.

Ms. Dankovich, the inventor, says each page can treat up to 100 liters of water. She recently presented her invention at the meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston, Massachusetts. She was asked whether she had considered adding classic literature on the book's pages.

"The idea of classic texts—that's of interest maybe later. We have discussed a little bit more exciting text. But we really haven't had the time to go through that part," she says.

Teri Dankovich and another researcher tested the drinkable book in Bangladesh, Ghana and South Africa. The tests proved to be successful.

Water for Life, a non-governmental organization, has provided financial support for the project.

【1】What do we learn about the book from the text?

A.It has pages with several functions.

    B.It is about environment protection.

C.It sells well around the world.

D.It can treat about 100 liters of water.

【2】What does the underlined phrase "that part" in Paragraph 6 refer to?

    A.Classic texts.

    B.Exciting discussion.

    C.Invention presentation.

    D.Financial support.

【3】In which country did not the researchers test the drinkable book?

    A.Ghana

    B.Bangladesh.

    C.South Africa.

    D.America.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Researchers have found a way to save those being ill.

B.Book pages could provide safe drinking water.

C.Knowledge is as important as drinkable water.

D.Millions of people are in great need of drinkable water.

  • 23、A bright and impressive bus carrying fresh local produce appeared in a community of North Carolina in June 2022. It was the first pay-what-you-can Mobile Market. As the name implies, shoppers could pay any price out of their own will. Even the suggested price was about 25% less than that offered in grocery stores. This market gave shoppers a dignified way to provide food for their families regardless of their budget.

Seeing the joy in shoppers’ eyes, Will Komegay, the founder of this non-profit program—Mobile Market, felt a sense of accomplishment. He had once witnessed a wasteful and unfortunate reality. At that time, countless pounds of food had to be thrown away by farmers due to the interruption in the supply chain. Meanwhile, millions of people were struggling to afford enough food to feed their families. Kornegay didn’t want to stand by.

With much working experience in food industry and background about how food system was designed, Kornegay decided to use his company’s vast network of farmer and food industry relationships to address the issue. His team used buses to bridge the farmers, the food industries and communities that needed food most. Thousands of pounds of food that was sourced from local partners was placed into homes.

Kornegay still remembered how the first Mobile Market came into being. His team made a detailed plan and chose the colors and images they preferred. Then they purchased a “retired” school bus and renovated it, giving it a new different look and equipping it with refrigerators and freezers. Thus was born the first Mobile Market.

To date, the project has partnered with dozens of local farmers and food producers and has already served an estimated 10,000 families over 150,000 pounds of food. In 2023, the team hope to serve 80 sites across 20 counties in Eastern North Carolina. Their vision is to perfect the project where they live, and scale into every state nationwide.

【1】What is the purpose of the Mobile Market?

A.To boost the income of local residents.

B.To promote sales in local grocery stores.

C.To raise money for the family with a tight budget.

D.To enable people to buy food at an affordable price.

【2】How did Kornegay make the program work?

    A.He ensured the food safety.

    B.He improved the supply chain.

    C.He increased the food production.

D.He built a network between communities.

【3】What does the underlined word “renovated” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Transformed.

    B.Replaced.

    C.Photographed.

    D.Exchanged.

【4】What is the prospect of the Mobile Market according to the last paragraph?

    A.It will be highly profitable.

B.It is expected to expand in scale.

C.It will become a new economic trend.

D.It is estimated to provide worldwide service.

  • 24、With golden sunshine and a gentle breeze(微风), autumn is the most beautiful seasons in the year. This is a great time to go outside and have fun. Go to a valley to see red maple trees,go and pick fruit in an orchard or find an open field to fly your kite in.

However, for many high school students, these great activities may be just a dream. With plenty of work to do, they spend all their hours indoors, struggling for a high mark in their exams. Of course, study is one of the most important things for teenagers. But life is definitely much more than that.

Sometimes we spend so much time studying that we forget how to make life wonderful. In doing so, we lose the real purpose of life —to be a valuable and happy person. To enjoy just how great it is to be alive, we have to put down our books and pens and look around us. Students, take some exercise to improve your health, talk with your parents and friends for understanding and walk around outside to refresh(振作)our body and mind.

Going out and enjoying the beautiful countryside often helps our creativity in our work. Chinese craftsman, Lu Ban created a saw to help woodworkers. But if he hadn’t walked outside, he would not have been inspired by a kind of toothed(锯齿状的)grass. We could also suppose if Newton hadn’t rested under that apple tree, then he wouldn’t have been hit by an apple, and his classic(经典的)theories would not have come out.

Going out is not only a break from hard work, but a chance to add to life experience. So come on, give your brain a good rest. Step out of the books and get your bag ready for an autumn outing. We are sure you will get much more than knowledge from the exciting journey.

【2】Why is going out a dream for many high school students?

A.They are unhappy to do so.

B.They have too much work to do for getting high marks in the exams.

C.Their parents don’t allow them to do so.

D.They think study is the most important thing for them.

【3】The passage is developed mainly by______________.

A.describing the beautiful scenery in Autumn

B.pointing out the present situation of high school students

    C.making predictions

    D.reasoning and giving examples
