  • 22、After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.

Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children’s questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children’s behavior.

Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing (不与人交往), while others will have angry outbursts (爆发). Parents should remain sensitive to each child’s reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it’s OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earthquake, might read a favorite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.

  • 23、A competition making up Versailles literature was launched on Sina Weibo recently. So what is Versailles literature?

Actually, the term has nothing to do with the French palace nor with literature. It came from The Rose of Versailles, a comic series which was about aristocratic life at the palace of Versailles in France in the late 18th century, and was coined by a Chinese influencer earlier this year. Known as humblebragging, it is a boast disguised as a complaint. "I have too many houses. How can I decide which one to decorate?" and "I thought I lost weight this morning. So disappointed when I realized it was because I took off the huge diamond ring my boyfriend gave me last night" are some examples of Versailles literature. The intention is to show off-usually things of materialistic values, yet one ought to pretend that's not the point.

As the 19th century English author Jane Austen famously wrote, "Nothing is more deceitful than the appearance of humility." The psychology behind humblebragging is to be recognized for one's successes and be liked by others at the same time, according to scholars. In her article titled Why do people hate humblebragging? published in Psychology Today, psychologist Dr Susan Krauss Whitbourne at the University of Massachusetts Amherst noted that humblebragging is a "strategy in pursuit of respect" because it draws attention to one's accomplishments in a circuitous way.

However, studies on social media users show that humblebragging as a self-promotion strategy does not work. In the essay Humblebragging: A distinct and ineffective self-presentation strategy, the University of North Carolina research Ovul Sezer and Harvard University scholars Francesca Gino and Michael Norton concluded from their research that humblebraggers are perceived more negatively than straight braggers due to the former's insincerity. "The critical factor differentiating the two groups of people is sincerity. People don't like braggers, but they at least see them as more sincere than humblebraggers," said Francesca Gino.

So, how can we annoy humblebraggers back? "Just pretend you don't get whatever it is they try to show off," a netizen advised." And respond with genuine sympathy for their complaints."

【1】Which of the following statements is typical of "Versailles literature"?

A.I've got a new haircut, which I think is funny.

B.Got five offers to date. I'm at a loss which to choose.

C.It's a headache how to make my son tidy up his room regularly.

D.I'm fed up with living in the countryside with no shopping malls around.

【2】What is the psychology behind humblebragging?

    A.To win others' sympathy.

    B.To mask his/her complaint.

    C.To show his/her sincerity.

    D.To earn others' admiration.

【3】What does the underlined world "circuitous" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Roundabout.

    B.Straightforward.

    C.Ambiguous.

    D.Double-edged.

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Humblebraggers are relatively more sincere than braggers.

B.Humblebragging is a genuine appearance of being humble.

C.To respond with real sympathy will discourage humblebraggers.

D.To be perceived positively, try using bragging rather than Versailles literature.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Every time my family makes special plans, they end up getting canceled due to some incidents. Every time that happens, my parents would tell us to look on the bright side and make the best of a bad situation. However, I never managed to do that until this spring.

On a sunny morning last month , my aunt Jen invited us to the annual outdoor spring celebration at her farm. Since my family hadn’t done anything different for ages, the whole family was very excited and everyone pulled his own weight to make sure everything goes as planned. In order to add more fun to this exciting trip, my little sister Indi and my little brother Tex even joined me to make an extra-special treat — cupcakes.

The picnic intended to go from twelve to three. After double checking the car, my parents loaded books, games, picnic blanket, and a whole big pack of food into the car. The moment of our departure finally arrived as the clock struck 11. However, everything went wrong the instant we bravely drove off. First, we had to stop and wait for Tex to find his shoes. Next, as we were driving down the road, we had to go back to the house because my mom forgot her wallet. Then, about halfway to Aunt Jen’s house, we had to drive far out of our way to find a place for Indi to use the bathroom. After that, my parents decided it’d be quicker to take this one little side country road as a shortcut. But the shortcut ended up turning into a long cut! We drove forever on a winding road with wildflower field spreading endlessly out on both sides and the deep green pine trees going on and on within our sight. Spotting hundreds of birds flying in the sky, I was seized by a growing sense of desperation for I entirely had no idea when we could hit our destination.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;
