  • 21、It was a secret Eli kept until he was 8 years old.

“He would scream, like we were hurting him when we tried to put a dress on him.” recalled Grace, his mother. That was when Eli was an 18-month-old baby girl already rejecting anything female.

Now, Eli’s mother and Eli are sharing their story with CBS New York. Eli still remembers being a baby, and rejecting putting on a dress. “Oh, I remember that,” he said. “It was like torture.” Now Eli is 11 years old. He is, by all accounts, a happy, active boy who never doubted he was born the wrong sex. Eli said to CBS New York. It was hard to keep that secret for 8 years though, “It was kind of hard because I hadn’t really told anyone ever,” he said.

“He said, ‘I have a secret, and the secret is I don’t want to be a girl. I think I’m a boy,’”Grace recalled. “…I thought, ‘I don’t know what we’re going to do, but we’re going to figure it out.”’

CBS New York reports that it was a less clear path for Ryan, now a 21-year-old man. He, too, was born female, but never felt like one.

He didn’t understand his feelings at the time. Then he learned about what it meant to be transgender on the Internet, and it began to make sense. “It was a relief to know what exactly I was or am,” he said.

Ryan’s mother said at first it was hard to accept. “It’s a scary thing to think about,” she said. But she came around. “I was glad my son is able to become the person he needed to be,” she said.

Experts say the kind of family support both Ryan and Eli are getting is of great significance. Without it, many transgender kids suffer from anxiety, depression and high rates of suicide.

“We see a lot of kids with a lot of mental health concerns, and we also see that those mental health concerns really reduced when the family is on board,” said Jean Malpas of Ackerman Institute for the Family, a non-profit research organization to CBS New York.

Grace said for her it went from a situation that felt really confusing and difficult to one that she now celebrates. “We feel so lucky to have him.” she said.

  • 23、For most of the recorded history of bicycles, wearing a helmet was something that was limited to professionals participating in competitions. 【1】

Nowadays, people are more aware of the need to make reasonable preparations to enjoy cycling safely. 【2】The fact is that it is unsafe to engage in this sort of behavior. Here are some facts that help explain why no one should ride a bicycle without a helmet.

A helmet can protect the rider from head injuries. Tens of thousands of bike riders are admitted to emergency rooms every year. In most cases, the rider was not wearing a bicycle helmet. The fact is that riding bicycle without a helmet is like operating a motor vehicle without wearing a seat belt. 【3】 The types of injuries range from simple cuts to major damage that causes swelling and pressure on the brain and even death.

【4】 In many instances, accidents involving bike riders also include some sort of motor vehicle. In a crash between the two devices, the rider of the bicycle is much more likely to suffer a serious injury. Helmets cushion (缓冲) the skull at the point of impact, minimizing the chances of any type of permanent damage that could result in brain damage or even death.

Adults should set an example for teens, teaching the value of safety by their actions. 【5】 Teens should also be engaged in setting the example for younger children.

A.Then a helmet makes your head safe.

    B.Unfortunately, not everyone appreciates bicycling.

C.Still, some people continue to ride a bicycle without a helmet.

D.Wearing a helmet yourself will encourage others to do likewise.

E.Bicycle helmets are designed to help absorb the shock of a crash.

F.In both cases, there is an increased risk of bodily harm, even permanent injury.

G.Until the 1980s, a movement to encourage the use of bicycle helmets among all bike riders arose.

  • 24、How much time do you spend doing research before you make a decision? There are people who go over every detail exhaustively before making a choice. 【1】 Psychologists call this way of thinking a cognitive bias (偏见), a tendency toward a specific mental mistake.

To study “jumping”, we examined decision-making patterns among more than 600 people from the general population. We found that jumpers made more errors than non-jumpers on problems that require thoughtful analysis. 【2】 In a quiz about US civics, they overestimated the chance that their answers were right significantly more than other participants did—even when their answers were wrong.

So what is behind “jumping”?Psychological researchers commonly distinguish between two pathways of thought: automatic system, which reflects ideas that come to the mind easily, spontaneously and without effort, and controlled system including conscious and effortful reasoning. Jumpers and nonjumpers are equally influenced by automatic thoughts. 【3】

It is the controlled system that helps people counter balance mental biases introduced by the automatic system. As a result, jumpers were more likely to accept the conclusions made at first blush without further questioning. A lack of controlled thinking is also more broadly connected to their problematic beliefs and faulty reasoning.

【4】 A method called metacognitive training can be used to target their biases, which can help people think more deliberatively. In this training, participants are confronted with their own biases. They can learn about the missteps and other ways of thinking through the problem at hand. It helps to chip away at participants’ overconfidence.

In everyday life, the question of whether we should think things through or instead go with our gut is a frequent and important one. 【5】 Sometimes the most important decision we make can be to take some more time before making a choice.

A.Happily, there may be some hope for jumpers.

B.Also, jumpers had problems with overconfidence.

C.But a fair number of individuals are quick to jump to conclusions.

D.It is certainly possible for them to overthink things to take a decision.

E.We plan to continue the work to trace other problems introduced by jumping.

F.The jumpers, however, did not engage in controlled reasoning to the same degree as non-jumpers.

G.Recent studies show that even gathering just a little bit more evidence may help us avoid a major mistake.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

In spite of all of the years spent in school preparing to enter the workplace, many recent graduates say that they struggle with the transition from classroom to career world and have difficulty adjusting to life on the job.

Writer and editor Joseph Lewis suggests one reason why this is the case. Lewis believes that most of our school experiences — from childhood through university -are fairly predictable, while life in the working world is far more ambiguous. In school, for example, the pattern stays more or less the same from year to year. In the workplace, however, constant change is the norm, and one has to adapt quickly. A project you are working on this month might suddenly change next month or next week, and it’s often hard to anticipate what you’ll be doing six to twelve months from now.

Another problem that graduates entering the workforce encounter is that they are unprepared to think analytically. In school, many students including those in college, spend a lot of time memorizing facts and repeating what they “learned” on tests. But in the workplace employees are often expected to think critically and make decisions about their work, not just follow a supervisor’s instructions.

Finally, many recent graduates say that one of the biggest difficulties they face is adapting to teamwork on the job. In some ways, school does prepare one for collaborative nature of the workplace. Learners sit classes every day with many other students. They must listen to others’ opinions, participate at times in group discussions, and learn how to get along outside the classroom. Nevertheless, in school, a student normally works independently to complete most tasks and receives a grade according to how well he or she has done. In the workplace, however, employees must regularly interact with others and are often dependent on their co-workers for their success.
