  • 21、   Facebook lets friends connect. They can give each other updates, share photos and post comments. But that’s not all. Facebook might also stress users out.

In a new study, 88 volunteers how much time they spent on Facebook and the types of Facebook posts and comments that they made. In addition, they answered questions about their feelings and state of mind. They also offered saliva. Researchers tested it for cortisol. This chemical is a stress hormone. Levels of it vary throughout the day.

In this study, people with the most Facebook friends, more than 300, had somewhat higher cortisol levels. Additionally, the more Facebook friends that users had, the more likely they were to feel anxious. On the other hand, youths who gave lots of 'likes' and supportive comments on Facebook had lower cortisol levels. 'The more social support you give to others, the lower your stress hormone levels will be, ' says Lupien.

'This research decidedly combines the social science approach and the medical science approach on an important question in our social-media age, ' says Wenhong Chen, a sociologist at the University of Texas at Austin. 'It's ready pleasantly new to see Lupien’s team study cortisol levels-along with questionnaire data. '

One finding from Lupien's work surprised Chen. Teens who felt they got a lot of support from others also had higher cortisol levels. Usually, she says, those feelings should protect people from stress. 'There are many potential dangers of social media use among young people, ' Chen notes. So, she says, enjoy Facebook, but be aware of the risks.

Lupien suggests that teen Facebook users share information with and support their friends on the site. They shouldn’t just stay silent. 'if anyone is more stressed, it's the watchers, not the sharers, ' she says. Also, she recommends that people who use social media heavily should find time to take active walks, to run or to do other activities. Cortisol increases a person's energy. “The best way to reduce stress hormones is to use the energy, ' she says.

B.Give more positive comments to others.

C.Listen to music frequently on social media.

D.Communicate less with others on Facebook.

3What is Wenhong Chen's attitude towards Lupien's study?

  • 22、The tree house is a platform or building constructed around, next to or among the trunk or branches of one or more strong trees. In a more dangerous time in human history, their position above the ground would protect the dweller against environment difficulties and possible fierce animals. As modern construction has improved, the tree houses have become less of a practical dwelling and more of a children's novelty. But now, these fun shelters are appealing to adults too and many are booking themselves in for a few nights among the treetops.

These tree house hotels can be found from Europe to Australia. Best of all, they come in a variety of interesting designs! From the traditional "four walls and a roof" hotel, to the more artistic Nothofagus Hotel in Chilean Patagonia, whose twelve-sided walls make it look like a beehive. The Free Spirit Spheres village on Vancouver Island in Canada allows guests to stay in one of three yellow spheres, which hang from trees. Not only are they as safe as houses, they're popular!

In Sweden, at the Treehotel, numbers have also risen. “In 2010, we had four rooms and around 1,500 guests a year. Today we have seven rooms and nearly 5,000 guests," co-founder Kent Lindvall explains. Each of the rooms there was designed by an architect, who was asked to make use of the light and surroundings. They include a mirrored cube, a bird's nest and a UFO.

And how about an office? Microsoft, hoping to give its employees thinking space, has constructed a tree building structure. "Studies show people can work better in nature. They are more productive," says Mr. Nelson, designer and builder of tree houses.

If you've no head for heights, then maybe a tree house will be your home away from home. But the sense of adventure, the novelty of the setting and the opportunity to return to nature are attracting an increasing number of tree house-staying adults.

  • 24、I start   my workday early, parking myself in front of my home computer and often forgetting to get up for hours. But one thing I try to do every day is take a ten-minute walk around midday.

Walking at lunchtime is a smart thing to do, a new study finds. This doesn’t seem like news. After all, we’ve known forever that doing exercise is good for us. But as The New York Times points out, those fitness studies typically looked at the effects of exercise plans in the long run.   This new study looks at changes that happen more quickly, from one day to the next or even   from this hour to the next hour.

For the study, researchers gathered a group of mostly sedentary(久坐的) office workers in the UK. All were out of shape, but otherwise emotionally and physically healthy. Researchers asked them to take 30-minute lunchtime walks, three days a week for 10 weeks. The volunteers were also asked to install apps on their phones, so that the researchers could send the volunteers questions   after   they   walked.   Then   the   researchers   used   those   answers   to judge   how   the volunteers were feeling about life and work, and to measure their feelings about everything from stress and tension to motivation.

When the researchers   compared the volunteers’ answers   on the   afternoons when   they walked to those on the afternoons they didn’t walk, there was quite a difference. On the days when they had a lunchtime walk, the volunteers said they felt less stressed, more energetic and more relaxed versus(与……相对) on the days when they didn’t walk.

Unfortunately, the researchers said many of the volunteers didn’t believe they’d be able to continue walking once the study ended, mainly because they were expected to work through

their lunch breaks. It’s an understandable response, but a sad one.

【1】How does the new study differ from other fitness studies?

A.It calls on people to have a walk after lunch.

B.It focuses on the short-term effects of walking.

C.It mainly pays attention to sedentary office workers.

D.It aims at studying the relationship between exercise and health.

【2】Why were the volunteers required to install apps on their phones?

A.To record their time spent online.

B.To know how long they walked.

C.To prevent them from getting lost.

D.To respond to the researchers’ questions.

【3】What is the finding of the new study?

A.Lunchtime walks can soon improve people’s mood.

B.Office workers usually have little time to go for a walk.

C.A sedentary lifestyle is linked to an increased risk of disease.

D.Walking brings more advantages to people than other exercise.

【4】What can we infer about the volunteers from the last paragraph?

A.They will spend more time walking.

B.Some of them tend to be more outgoing.

C.Most of them will perform better at work.

D.They may stop lunchtime walks due to work pressure.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless , I’d always wanted five or six kids. Three surgeries later, that dream would never come true.

Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove (鸽子)seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs(嫩枝).”Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They're going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving(感到悲伤),I couldn't help but look forward to the doves’   visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. I’d do the cooking and for a moment, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch(从头开始), though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.
