二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A shark that walks in water instead of swimming might sound like a creature straight out of science fiction. However, that is precisely how the fish -- found in the waters of Northern Australia moves across the seafloor .The unique ocean animals were discovered by a team of scientists led by Dr. Christine Dudgeon from Australia's University of Queensland during a 12 year global conservation study.

The newly-found sharks have evolved (进化) to survive in low oxygen environments, enabling them to hunt during low tides. The researchers believe their ability to use their fins (鳍) to walk affords the sharks a remarkable edge over the smaller animals they try to bunt. “While they are super hunters in their shallow habitat, the tiny sharks present no threat to people," says Dudgeon.“At less than a meter long on average, they're incredibly cute little animals that do not look like sharks at all," she adds.

A DNA analysis of skin samples from the live fish suggests that walking sharks broke away from their original population and became a distinct species about nine million years ago. Though that may appear to be a long time ago, it is relatively recent given that sharks have been around for more than 400 million years. In fact, Dudgeon and her team believe walking sharks are the youngest kind of sharks on Earth!

The researchers say that the sharks' small numbers and small habitat make them extremely vulnerable (易受伤害) to natural disasters and overfishing. They are currently on the Nature Red List, which lists species at risk. Dudgeon and her team believe sensible conservation management plans are urgently needed to protect the walking sharks and other endangered animals from further threats.

【1】What is the most noticeable feature of the newly-found sharks?

A.They are cute and harmless to humans.

B.They can survive in their shallow habitat.

C.They walk on their fins across the seafloor.

D.They are the youngest kind of sharks on Earth.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.The evolution of the shark.

    B.The behavior of the sharks.

    C.The population of the sharks.

D.The DNA samples of the sharks.

【3】What should be done without delay according to Dudgeon and her team?

    A.Adjusting the methods of fishing.

B.Putting the sharks on the Nature Red List

    C.Changing the sharks' living environments.

D.Adopting necessary measures to protect the sharks.

【4】In which part of a website can we read the text?

    A.Environment.

    B.Nature.

    C.Education.

    D.Geography.

  • 22、Researchers have found multilingualism (多语言能力) is good for economy. Countries which actively encourage the development of different languages gain a range of rewards, from more successful exports to a more creative workforce.

“Language matters on a larger national level and at the level of smaller companies,” said Hogan-Brun, a researcher in language study. Switzerland, for example, owes 10% of its GDP to its multilingual background. The country has four national languages. Britain, on the other hand, is thought to lose about 3.5% of its GDP every year since 95% of its population speaks English, which is the primary language of the country.

What Hogan-Brun said is reasonable. Languages partly can help build trade relations. A study of small and medium-sized companies in Sweden and Germany found that those that invested more in languages were able to export more goods. German companies that invested heavily in multilingual staff added 10 export countries to their markets. Companies that invested less said they missed out on business deals.

Researchers have also long stressed the individual benefits of speaking more than one language. Several studies show that languages help promote earning power. According to a Canadian study, women and men who can speak several languages earn 3.6% and 6.6% more than their English-only colleagues respectively. The twist: This is true even if they don’t use their second language for work. “It seems that you don’t have to actually speak a second language on the job to receive the financial rewards,” said an economics professor. He thought that this was because knowing a second language was seen as a sign of power. Beyond these immediate economic rewards, languages can help a country’s workforce in long-term ways. Multilingualism has been shown to delay memory loss. It has also been associated with a better ability to concentrate and process information.

    【1】What can multilingual countries expect?

    A.Large numbers of imported goods.

    B.Productive workers with great creativity.

    C.New chances of developing education.

    D.Powerful comprehensive national power.

【2】Why does the author want to show by listing the statistics in paragraph 2?

    A.European countries are rich.

    B.Language research is important.

C.The number of English speakers is increasing.

D.Multilingualism can promote national economic growth.

【3】What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?

    A.Add some forecast information.

B.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

    C.Support Hogan-Brun’s viewpoint.

D.Give some advice to small companies.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.Women learn more languages than men.

B.Good native language is a sign of power.

    C.Being multilingual benefits brain health.

D.Canadians prefer using their second language.

  • 23、In one study, college students who had important and reality-based conversations were more content than their peers who changed mere amusing remarks. But don’t deny small talks just yet.

Psychologists have long said that connecting with others is important to well-being, but just how much conversation we require is under investigation. In one study, researchers overheard(偷听) undergraduates for four days, and then cataloged each overheard conversation as either “small talks” (“What do you have done? Popcorn? Yummy!”) or “substantive”(实质性的交流)(“So did they get divorced soon after?”). They found that the second type correlated相关 with happiness —the happiest students had roughly twice as many substantive talks as the unhappiest ones. Small talks, meanwhile, made up only 10 percent of their conversation, versus almost 30 percent of their conversation among the least content students.

But don’t deny small talks just yet. Scientists believe that small talks could promote bonding. Researchers found that a small talk maintains closeness with loved ones after studying ring-tailed lemurs’(环尾弧猴) call-and-response conversations, similar to human small talks. Still, joking with strangers could brighten your morning. In a series of experiments, those bus-takers told to chat with others are reported a more pleasant journey than those told to “enjoy your solitude” or to do whatever they normally would. Small talks can also help us feel connected to our surroundings. People who smiled at, made eye contact with, and briefly spoke with their Starbucks baristas (咖啡师) reported a greater sense of belonging than those who rushed through the transaction.

Of course, some of us are better than others at turning small talks into something bigger. All the differences come to what researchers call “a curious mindset”.

So go ahead to talk and inquire. Small talks needn’t be idle. And being curious about others’ business isn’t all bad.

【1】 According to the second paragraph, we can know that   .

     A. we can deny small talks because substantive talks are more important.

     B. People who make more small talks are much happier than those making substantive talks.

     C. the well-being is built largely due to the percentage of our substantive talks.

     D. the least content students have twice the amount of small talks than those content students.

【2】The benefits of small talks are the following EXCEPT   .

     A. It can make the bonding between people much closer

     B. It can shorten the distance between strangers and make the journey pleasant

     C. It makes us feel connected with the surroundings

     D. You can get more free cups of coffee from Starbucks baristas

【3】What’s the author’s attitude to small talks?

     A. Negative. B. Supportive.  C. Neutral. D. Critical.

【4】 The text mainly tells us that    .

     A. small talks are important in communication

     B. substantive talks make people happier than small talks

     C. small talks and substantive talks are equally important in life

     D. substantive talks are important in communication

  • 24、Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Europe. In order to find Asia, they had to find a way past South America. The man who eventually found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan.

Magellan sailed from Seville in August 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the severe winter on the coast of Patagonia (巴塔哥尼亚), he discovered the channel which is now called the Strait of Magellan. In November 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America.

They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. But they did not see any land until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia. Before they arrived at these islands, later known as the Philippines, men were dying of starvation. While they were staying in the Philippines, Magellan was killed in battles. The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. They decided to sail round Africa. After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into Seville three years after leaving. DreamforFuture

People were busy in their own laboratories in the Mars.Turtex told me,“Let us go to the Earth to have a cup of coffee.”

I laughed for such a childish joke and I also jokingly asked him,“Is there no coffee shop in the Mars?”

He replied,“It has but they can’t prepare coffee as tasty as that on the Earth.”

However, for a while I thought it would be better to take a cup of tasty coffee from Ramu’s Coffee Shop located at our village,Kushmandi.

Turtex told me to enter a room near his laboratory. We entered there and found that the room was internally coated with some materials like sponge.Turtex closed the door of the room with a clap.I saw some colourful buttons inside the room. After a few seconds I heard another clap and noticed that the door opened.

    Turtex said,“Come with me.”

    I asked,“Where?”

He replied,“Now we are at Kushmandi.”

    I shouted,“What?”

We came out of the room and I astonishingly viewed the sky-scrapers around me.Turtex said loudly,“What’s wrong with you?Come with me.”

Eventually we entered a coffee club designed like a Five Star Restaurant.Suddenly I noticed a display board with an electronic text on,“Welcome to Kushmandi. Now you are in famous Ramu’s Coffee Shop.Enjoy the taste of the best coffee on the Earth.”

Suddenly many hazy and crazy questions came to my mind.

“What was the nearby room of the lab?How was it possible to travel an enormous distance from the Mars to the Earth? Is it like opening my favourite TV channel with a remote? How the poor coffee stall of our village turned into a Five Star Coffee Club?In which century were we?”

    注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Thinking such hazy things,I followed Turtex into the coffee club.
