二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、One school night this month I quietly approached Alexander, my 15-year-old son, and patted him on the cheek in a manner I hoped would seem casual. Alex knew better, sensing by my touch, which remained just a moment too long, that I was sneaking (偷偷地做) a touch of the beard that had begun to grow near his ears. Suddenly he went stormily to his computer screen. That, and an angry look of his eyes, told me more forcefully than words: Mom, you are seen through!

I realized I committed a silly behavior: not showing respect for my teenager’s personal space. “The average teenager has strong feelings about his privacy,” said two young women experts. Ms. Frankel and Ms. Fox, both 17, are the authors of Breaking the Code, a new book that seeks to bridge the generational divide between parents and adolescents. It is being promoted by its publisher as the first self-help guide by teenagers for their parents, a kind of Kids Are From Mars, Parents Are From Venus that de-mystifies the language and actions of teenagers.

Personally, I welcomed insights into teenagers from any qualified experts, and that included the authors. The most common missteps in interacting with teenagers, they instructed me, result from the conflict between parents maintaining their right to know what goes on under their roof and teenagers striving to guard their privacy. When a child is younger, they write, every decision centers around the parents. But now, as Ms. Fox told me, “often your teenager is in this circle that doesn’t include you.”

Ms. Fox and Ms. Frankel acknowledge that teenagers can be quick to interpret their parents’ remarks as negative or authoritative and respond with aggressiveness that masks their defenselessness. “What we want above all is your approval,” they write. “Don’t forget, no matter how much we act as if we don’t care what you say, we believe the things you say about us.”

【1】In the second paragraph, Kids Are From Mars, Parents Are From Venus is mentioned because ______.

A.it disapproves of opinions in Breaking the Code

B.it shares the same theme with Breaking the Code

C.it employs the same language style as Breaking the Code

D.it ranks right after Breaking the Code among self-help guides

【2】With their book, Ms. Frankel and Ms. Fox ______.

    A.declare teenagers’ rights

    B.remind parents of teenagers’ missteps

    C.help parents know teenagers better

D.arouse much disagreement from the public

【3】What often leads to conflicts between parents and teenagers based on the passage?

    A.Teenagers’ defense of their privacy.

    B.Parents’ striving to instruct teenagers.

C.Teenagers’ refusal to follow experts’ advice.

D.Parents’ dislike in teenagers’ attitudes to life.

【4】What can be learned from the last paragraph?

A.Teenagers always rush to judgement on others.

B.Parents often seek to create an authoritative image.

C.Parents’ opinions about teenagers matter much to them.

D.Teenagers feature good comprehension and defenselessness.

  • 22、   From family to strangers on the subway and public figures on 24-hour news cycles, humans recognize an astonishing number of 5,000 faces, scientists said Wednesday. The study by scientists at Britain's University of York found that our brain allows us to process the thousands of faces we encounter in busy social environments, on our smart phones and our television screens every day.

"In everyday life, we are used to identifying friends, colleagues, and celebrities, and many other people by their faces" Rob Jenkins, from York's Department of Psychology. "But no one can tell how many faces people actually know."

For the study, Jenkins and his team asked participants to write down as many faces they could remember from their personal lives. The volunteers were then asked to do the same with people they recognized but did not know personally. They were also shown thousands of images of famous people and asked which ones they recognized. The team found an enormous range of the number of faces each participant could recall, from roughly 1,000— 10,000. "We found that people know around 5 ,000 faces on average,' Jenkins said.

The team said it believes this figure—the first ever baseline of human " facial vocabulary", could aid the development of facial recognition software increasingly used at airports and criminal investigations. It may also help scientists better understand cases of mistaken identity.

While the team said it was focused on how many faces humans actually know, they said it might be possible for some people to continue learning to recognize an unlimited number of faces, given enough practice. They pointed out that the brain has an almost limitless capacity to memorize words and languages—the limits on these instead come from study time and motivation.

The range of faces recognized by participants went far beyond what may have been useful: for thousands of years humans would likely only have met a few dozen people throughout their lives.

Jenkins said it was not clear why we developed the ability to distinguish between thousands of faces in the crowd.

"This could be another case of "overkill" that is sometimes seen in nature," Jenkins said. "The poison of some spiders can kill a horseeven though the spider has no need to eat a horse. "

1Why did Jenkins' team conduct the study?

A.To prove people's memory varies widely. B.To know how the brain processes images.

C.To measure how many faces one can identify. D.To count how many people one meets in a day.

2Who might benefit from the study?

    A.Public figures. B.Police officials. C.Aircraft commanders. D.Language trainers.

3Why the author mentioned "overkill" in the last paragraph?

A.To make the recognition ability better understood.

B.To make a comparison between human and spider.

C.To explain why our ability is useful.

D.To introduce another topic for further thinking.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Software used in public will be improved B.Humans recognize 5,000 faces on average

C.The power of the brain is almost limitless D.The poison of some spiders can kill a horse

  • 23、Early birds-people who feel most energetic in the morning-tend to make healthier food choices throughout the day than night owls(夜猫子) , according to a new study.

"Evening types had more irregular meal times," notes study author Mirkka Maukonen, studying human nutrition and obesity(肥胖) in Finland.

Her study focused on people’s risk of heart disease and their eating habits. Participants described when and what they had eaten during the past two days.

Maukonen’s team then looked at l,854 people’s lifestyle. After analyzing the data, the researchers found that both morning and evening people consumed approximately the same number of calories over a whole day. However, night owls tended to eat their meals later than early birds. Before 10:00 am, night owls consumed less food than early birds. More of their calories came from sugar. After 8:00 pm, the night owls ate more sugar and fat. Meanwhile, early birds ate more protein during both the morning and the evening hours.

“Night owls tend to be less healthy than early risers,” notes Courtney Peterson who studies diet and meal timing. "They are more likely to get heart disease or cancer. The fact that night owls tend to eat more junk food probably plays a role," Peterson says. "Other factors(因素) also can ruin a night owl's health. Night owls generally sleep worse," says Peterson. "Poor sleep has been linked to unhealthy food choices. "

Peterson and Maukonen say night owls tend to have poor eating habits. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that being a night owl makes a person a poor eater. It could be the reverse- eating poorly could affect people’s sleep habits.

“The new findings should serve as a wake-up call to night owls. For them, the new results should encourage paying attention to healthier lifestyle choices,” says Maukonen.

【1】How did Maukonen do research about people’s risk of heart disease?

    A.By living with them.

    B.By studying their lifestyles.

C.By focusing on the laboratory data.

D.By looking at their consuming amount.

【2】What causes night owls to get heart disease more easily?

    A.Exercising less.

    B.Taking in less calories.

    C.Unwillingness to eat.

    D.Consumption of much unhealthy food.

【3】What does the underlined word “reverse” in Paragraph 6 mean?

    A.Contrary.

    B.Similarity.

    C.Necessity.

    D.Power.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Never Eat at Night

    B.Be Positive to Your Life

    C.Early Birds Eat Better

    D.Can We Avoid Heart Disease?
