二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、According to a recent study,a new genetically modified(转基因的)rice can prevent infections of HIV,the virus responsible for the disease AIDS.

The study reports the newly-developed rice produces proteins(蛋白质)that attach directly to the HIV virus. This process keeps the virus from mixing with human cells. The scientists say it can remove the effect of the virus and block its spreading.

The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS reports that worldwide, nearly 37 million people were living with HIV in 2017. The organization says the largest number of those are in ·developing countries. Nearly two-thirds of HIV cases are in Africa. Now there is no cure for HIV/AIDS though there have been developments in oral drug treatments to slow the progression of the disease.

The new study predicts the rice-based method will lead to long-term use of the anti-HIV treatment across the developing world. Researchers said the "groundbreaking" discovery is “realistically the only way" that anti-HIV combination treatments can be produced at a cost low enough for the developing world.

They say the easiest and most cost-effective way to use the rice will be to make it into a cream to be put on the skin. The HIV-fighting proteins can then enter the body through the skin. People all over the world could grow the rice and make the cream themselves. This would prevent the cost and travel required for many patients to receive treatments and medicine.

The process of changing the genetic structure of food crops has been debated for some time. Critics of genetically engineered crops believe they can harm people. The scientific team says further testing is needed to ensure that the genetic engineering process does not produce any additional chemicals that could be dangerous to people.

【1】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A.The terrible situations of HIV infections.

    B.The rapid development of Africa.

C.The practical ways to cure AIDS.

D.The efforts made by the United Nations.

【2】In which way will the rice be used at the lowest cost?

    A.By transforming it into proteins.

B.By processing it into a cream.

C.By attaching it to the HIV virus.

D.By adding it to an oral drug.

【3】What can we infer about the genetic engineering process?

A.It can prevent infections of HIV.

    B.It has produced dangerous chemicals.

C.It is intended for the developed world.

D.It requires further testing to ensure the safety.

【4】From which is the text probably taken?

    A.A biology textbook.

    B.A first aid brochure.

    C.A social web page.

    D.A health magazine.

  • 22、I’d been retired for four years, when a friend suggested university. I thought he was joking—I was rubbish at school and failed my 11-plus. But we love to compete over Mastermind and University challenge, and he thought I’d make it. And he was absolutely right!

I did a foundation course first, which was part time at the University Lifelong Learning Centre(LLC), two nights a week and the odd Saturday. I did quite well, and that gave me the confidence to do a full time, three year degree. I’m passionate about art and I always wanted to be here for the journey and not the destination. That sounds really corny, but it was the truth in my case.

Initially it was a bit strange fitting in with my course mates. They were all 18, straight out of sixth form or college. Over time, though, they’ve all been fine — now, we all get on really well and there is no issue. I’ve made plenty of friends as a member of the mature students society, and I do some volunteering through the LLC, chatting to prospective students about my experience of coming to university. I tell them my story and basically encourage them to give it a go because you’ve got nothing to lose. I like to think I’ve convinced a few of them.

I have no regrets at all. Enrolling in university was the best piece of advice I’ve received in years, especially post-retirement. I needed routine in my life; I needed purpose. I’m not going to spend my day in the bookies or the pub. If you’ve got a passion for something, you should pursue it.

【1】What do we learn from Paragraph 1?

A.The author often competed with his friend at university,

B.The author was satisfied with his performance at school,

C.The advice of his friend was a big challenge for the author.

D.The author’s friend told a joke when suggesting university.

【2】What was it that made him determined to pursue a full time degree?

A.His long held passion for art.

    B.His boring retirement life.

C.His success in the foundation course.

D.His desire to travel to the destination.

【3】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.How he got along with his course mates

B.How he helped his friends at university.

C.What activities he took part in at school

D.What he experienced as a volunteer.

【4】Which of the following can serve as the title of the passage?

    A.Knowledge is power.

B.It’s never too old to learn.

C.Failure is the mother of success.

D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

  • 23、A new study, conducted by British company Mindlab International, has found that listening to music at work increases accuracy (精确) and speed, The Telegraph reported.

Perhaps, some parents disagree with this idea, saying, "Switch off the music and concentrate!" Well, if that's the case with your parents, you might now be able to convince them that you have science on your side.

The company gave 26 participants(参与者)a series of different tasks for five days in a row, including spell checking, mathematical word problems, data entry, and abstract reasoning. The participants completed these tasks while listening to music or no music at all.

The results showed that while music was playing, 88% of participants produced their most accurate test results and 81% completed their fastest work. David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International, told The Telegraph, "Music is a very powerful management tool if you want to increase not only the efficiency of your workforce but also their emotional state... they are going to become more positive about the work."

However, you may have a list of your favorite songs, but not all kinds of music match all homework. For maths or other subjects involving numbers or attention to detail, you should listen to classical music, the study found. In the study, pop music enabled participants to complete their tasks 58% faster than when listening to no music at all. If you are reviewing your English writing, pop music is the best choice, as it is the best kind for spell checking. It cut mistakes by 14%, compared to listening to no music. After finishing your homework, do you often take time to check your answers? Maybe, some dance music is suitable for you.

1What did the participants have to do in the study?

    A. Persuade their parents to listen to music.

    B. Do a series of work without rest or pause.

    C. Complete five tasks in five days without help.

    D. Finish tasks with music or without music at all.

2What does the underlined word "they" in Para 4 refer to?

    A. Results.   B. Tools.

    C. Participants.   D. Tests.

3What is the best title for the text?

    A. Music Helps Us to Learn   B. We Can’t Live Without Music

    C. Not All Music Suits You   D. Listen to Different Music

  • 24、"Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.

Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation (直译) of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on Google.com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.

Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective (警探) named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.

Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the color and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.

You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness.

【1】What did the writer himself feel surprised at?

A.The Chinglish expression “Long time no see.”

B.So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.

C.“Long time no see.” is used as a standard American English greeting.

D.Finding out Americans use the expression every day.

【2】What do the underlined words “melting pot” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Confucius’s words.

    B.Culture mixture.

    C.A kind of cooked dish.

    D.American changing cultures.

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Detectives translated the phrase “Long time no see.”

B.Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.

C.The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.

D.Hollywood made “Long time no see.” popular.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.

B.Americans have a strong interest in Chinese culture.

C.Some American expressions can be used in China.

D.Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.
