二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Robots really are taking over the world. They’re writing novels— the first was 1 the Road, a cyborg’s homage to Jack Kerouac published in 2018. And they’re making lunch: The California restaurant chain Cali Burger is trying out a robot that can flip 2, 000 burgers a day. What human can compete--especially given that robots don’t complain, ask for raises, or get drunk at the office Christmas party?

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the invention of the word robot by the Czech playwright Karel Capek, we thought it would be fun to take a look at another side of robotkind, one that’s all too human. Here’re two failed attempts by robots to replace us flesh-and-bone types.

A few years back, the Hennna Hotel in Nagasaki, Japan, hired 243 robots to cover positions ranging from receptionists to bellboys. Unfortunately, the check-in robots had trouble answering guests’ questions and photocopying passports, while bellboy robots kept banging into walls and tripping over curbs. One in-room assistant sprang to attention every time a lodger snored, saying, “Sorry, I couldn’t catch that. Could you repeat your request?” Not long after the experiment began, the hotel "fired" half of the malfunctioning robots. And they didn’t get their tips, either.

Facial recognition software has one problem— it can’t always recognize faces. The American Civil Liberties Union proved that point when it used the Amazon Rekognition software to match mug shots of criminals to 28 members of Congress. But what about soccer ball recognition? During a match last year, the Scottish soccer team Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC unveiled AI-programmed video cameras designed to automatically follow the ball. Alas, the cameras constantly mistook the referee’s bald head for the soccer ball. One helpful viewer called the team to suggest supplying the referee with a cap.

【1】Why did the hotel fire as many as half of the robots they had hired?

A.Because they cost much more than they earned.

B.Because they didn’t answer their guests’ questions.

C.Because they often disturbed their customers.

D.Because they failed to do their jobs as expected.

【2】What does the underlined word “unveiled” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?

    A.borrowed

    B.introduced

    C.purchased

    D.invented

【3】What did the author take a soccer match as an example to show?

    A.His protest against the cameras.

B.His deep love for soccer matches.

    C.Some failure attempted by robots.

D.The great success achieved by robots.

【4】Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?

    (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, ③=Paragraph 3, ④=Paragraph 4)

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

  • 22、   The next time a giant Big Mac or Coke flashes into your mind when you’re walking home from the pub, you may not simply have the snacks.

A British hi-tech company has created a new advertising system that uses lasers (激光) to project images up to 200 metres tall from the sides of tall buildings, enabling advertisers to reach people from virtual billboards in the sky. Passers-by will see each image for only between one tenth and quarter of a second, as their eyes catch the light from certain angles.

Advertising agencies and big businesses have already signalled their interest, but Skyline campaigners have branded the technology “greedy” and said that it could fill our skies with showy and tasteless brands.

The Echo system uses a high laser projector to bounce light off a narrow reflective strip fixed to the side of a building, visible up to 1km away. This creates large-scale images that are captured briefly in the viewer’s eye as a result of the “persistence of vision” effect: the same effect that leaves an imprint (印记) of a light source on your vision after you’ve turned away.

Daniel Siden, the technology’s inventor, explained: People often think this could be subversive, but it’s actually less invasive and more fun than traditional advertising. Mr.Siden said that the system was safe because of the distance between the projector and passers-by. And images would be above the line of sight of drivers and cyclists and below the field of vision of airline pilot. The images have been tested and shown not to cause epileptic seizures (癫痫发作).

Because it uses only one strip of reflected light, the system needs a small amount of the power, about one-twentieth of a standard 96-sheet digital outdoor display for an image of the same height.

Still, some Skyline campaigners dislike the technology and believe it delivers subliminal advertising (隐形广告). Barbara Weiss of the Skyline Campaign, said: “It’s actually offensive. London’s latest tall buildings are not particularly well-built or well designed, but unfortunately people are forced to look at them. Adding stupid advertising that’s invasive in its nature will only make it worse.”

1Why does the writer use the example of Big Mac, Coke in paragraph 1?

A.Because he attempts to promote these products to potential consumers.

B.Because he wants to introduce a new advertising technology to readers.

C.Because he studies the association between products and images in advertising.

D.Because he tries to illustrate the effectiveness of flashing images of advertised goods.

2Which of the following statements about the Echo system is true according to the passage?

A.Pedestrians can see the flashing images from specific angles.

B.It’s a new system developed by an advertising agency.

C.The image will no longer exist in vision after you’ve turned away.

D.The system consists of a laser projector, a reflective strip and a physical billboard.

3The underlined word “subversive” in paragraph 5 probably means ________.

    A.subconscious B.damaging C.harmless D.imaginative

4Which party is likely to set obstacles to the application of the Echo system?

    A.Environmentalists worried about energy consumption.

B.Drivers, cyclists and pilots whose sight might be affected.

C.The Skyline Campaign regarding the technology as flashy.

D.The patients who suffer from epileptic seizures.

  • 23、   During the New Stone Age people invented bone needles and began to sew simple winter dress. With the development of the society, people were engaged in agriculture and they started to spin and weave.

In the class society, dress became the symbol of social status. It was from the Xia and Shang Dynasties that the dress system was born in China. In the Zhou Dynasty, the system was perfected.

During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the economy boomed and people led a quiet life. People from different countries gathered in Chang’ an and Luoyang to promote the international cultural exchange.

On the other hand the ideology (思想) also directly influenced dress and adornment (装饰) During the Warring States Period, many vassal (诸侯) states were competing with each other, hence the patterns of dress and adornment became diversified. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the unity of ancient China and the prosperity of economy brought about new thoughts, and the dress became very good. Because of the intensity of the feudal ideology, the patterns of dress and adornment gradually became conservative from the Song and Ming Dynasties. Influenced by western cultures, the designs were more fitting and tasteful from late Ming.

Rules were made for the color of ancient dress and adornment. Yellow was the most valuable color as a symbol of the center. Green, red, white and black symbolized the East, the South, the West and the North respectively. Green, red, black, white and yellow were pure colors applied by the emperors and officials. The common people could only use he secondary colors.

The geometrical (几何的) patterns the pictures of animals and plants were widely used on ancient dress and adornment. The compositions were balanced. During the Tang and Song Dynasties more attention was paid to the compositions. From the Ming and Qing Dynasties most of the patterns were realistic.

    A.During the New Stone Age.

B.From the Xia and Shang Dynasties.

    C.During the Zhou Dynasty.

    A.The adornment became splendid.

B.The patterns of the dress became conservative.

C.The dress became more fitting and tasteful.

    D.The colors became more diverse.

【3】Which of the following statements about the color of the ancient dress is TRUE?

A.Yellow was a symbol of the center.

    B.Black symbolized the East.

    B.By listing some numbers.

    C.By following the time order.

    D.By quoting a saying.

Most kids grow up learning they cannot draw on the walls. But it might be time to unlearn that training-this summer, a group of culture addicts, artists and community organizers are inviting New Yorkers to write all over the walls of an old house on Governors Island.

The project is called Writing On It All, and it’s a participatory(参与式) writing project and artistic experiment that has happened on Governor's Island every summer since 2013.

“Most of the participants are people who are just walking by or are on the island for other reasons, like they came for the jazz festival, or they just kind of happen to be there,” artistic director of Writing On It All, Alexandra Chasin, tells Smithsonian. com.

The 2020 season runs through June 26.Each session(会期) has a theme, and participants are given a variety of materials and prompts and asked to cover surfaces with their thoughts and art This year, the programs range from one that turns the house into a short piece of collaborative(合作的) writing to one that explores the meaning of exile(流亡) .

Governor's Island is a national historic landmark district long used for military purposes. Now known as “New York's shared space for art and play,” the island, which lies between Manhattan and Brooklyn in Upper New York Bay, is closed to cars but open to summer tourists who come for festivals, picnics, adventures, as well as these “legal graffiti” sessions.

The notes and art scribble on the walls are an experiment in self-expression. So far, participants have ranged in age from 2 to 85. Though Chasin says the focus of the work is on the activity of writing, rather than the text that ends up getting written, some of the work that comes out of the sessions has stuck with her.

“One of the sessions that moved me the most was state violence on black women and black girls,” says Chasin, explaining that in the room, people wrote down the names of names of those killed because of it. “People do beautiful work and leave beautiful messages.”

    A.Unlearn their training in drawing.

B.Participate in a state graffiti show.

C.Cover the walls of an old house with graffiti.

    A.They are just culture addicts.

    B.They are graffiti enthusiasts.

    C.They are writers and artists.

    D.They are mostly passers-by.

【3】What kind of place is Governor's Island nowadays?

A.It’s a military site that attracts tourists and artists.

B.It’s an open area for tourists to enjoy themselves.

C.It’s an area now accessible only to tourist vehicles.

D.It’s a place in Upper New York Bay formerly used for exiles.

【4】What does Chasin say about the project Writing On It All?

A.It creates some meaningful artistic works.

B.It starts the career of many creative artists.

C.It helps increase the influence of graffiti art.
