二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I used to be the most determined resolution-maker. Even as a child, I was always goal-centered and loved the feeling of accomplishing things, and every January 1st, I would sit down and write out my resolutions for the upcoming year. And what resolutions they were! I always picked big goals, like: In the New Year, I will lose 50 pounds! And run a marathon!

The problem? I’d start out strong, but by February or March, I’d be out of willpower and I’d slide quietly back into my old habits. Every winter, I’d feel guilty and ashamed, looking back at all of the amazing things… I think one of my biggest problems with New Years resolutions was wanting to “dream big” but not having the skills and ability to do those things.

Now I take the opposite approach I’m all about the little goals. First, little goals are easy to set. Instead of saying I’m going to run a marathon, I’ve decided I’m going to run 20 minutes three days a week. Second, little goals are easier to accomplish. Every time I check one of my mini goals off my list, I feel a burst of pride and accomplishment. It’s a great feeling, and I don’t have to wait until the end of the year to enjoy it!

The other great thing about making small goals instead of resolutions is that you can build small goals on top of each other, adding the achievements together. For instance, recently I decided to make sure I ate five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. After a few months, this became a solid habit.

【1】Why did the author feel guilty and ashamed?

A.Because she picked big goals as her resolutions.

B.Because she failed to accomplish her resolutions.

C.Because she concentrated on the amazing things.

D.Because she loved the sense of accomplishment.

【2】How did the author solve her problem?

A.She began to make small goals.

B.She returned to her old habits.

C.She changed her attitude to dreams.

D.She gave up making any resolutions.

【3】What did the author want to say in the last paragraph?

A.Small goals are easy to achieve.

B.Small goals lead to big achievements.

    C.Persistence brings about good habits.

D.Resolutions are worse than mini goals.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Make New Year’s Resolutions

    B.Combine Big and Small Goals

C.Set Small Goals not Big Ones

    D.Dream Big and Take Action

  • 22、One day, when I was working as a psychologist in England, an adolescent boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. "This boy has lost his family," he wrote. "He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I'm very worried about him. Can you help?"

I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesn't have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically.

The first two times we met David didn't say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the childrens drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon - in complete silence and without looking at me. It's not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.

Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?

"Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with," I thought. "Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering." Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.

    "It's your turn," he said.

After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.

Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one - without any words – can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.

【1When he first met the author, David________.

    A. felt a little excited

    B. walked energetically

    C. looked a little nervous

    D. showed up with his teacher

    【2As a psychologist, the author_______.

    A. was ready to listen to David

    B. was skeptical about psychology

    C. was able to describe David's problem

    D. was sure of handling David's problem

【3David enjoyed being with the author because he ______.

    A. wanted to ask the author for advice

    B. needed to share sorrow with the author

    C. liked the children's drawings in the office

    D. beat the author many times in the chess game

【4What can be inferred about David?

    A. He recovered after months of treatment.

    B. He liked biking before he lost his family.

    C. He went into university soon after starting to talk.

    D. He got friends in school before he met the author.

    【5What made David change?

    A. His teacher's help.

    B. The author's friendship.

    C. His exchange of letters with the author.

    D. The author's silent communication with him.

  • 23、Keep Calm During the Hard Times

When life gets hard, sometimes it's not easy to control yourself and not to sink deep into the bad feelings. Have you ever wondered how some people can be so calm during the hard times1 Here are four things you can do to get through hard times.

Cry if you need to-for a while. Some people like to control themselves.2 If you do control them, it's like holding a ball under the water. You can do it for a while, but it will finally come back to the surface. So have a good cry once in a while to help you think more clearly.3 Lost in the bad emotions, we won't change anything. Let's say you just lost your job. Maybe it is a shock. After crying, then you should make the decision to put your calm hat on. Start to find new jobs. Then do something.

Ask for help. Unluckily, a lot of people think that asking for help is a sign of weakness. It's not!4 Nowhere! Having other people support you will make you feel like you have more power than before.

Believe that things will get better. If you don't believe that things will change, then they won't. I always love Henry Ford's words, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't-you are right." If you think things will get better, then they finally will. If you think they won't, then they won't.5

Stay calm when life gets hard. If you practice these steps on a regular basis, sooner or later it will become second nature to you.

    A. Find the solution.

    B. Remember that it won't last forever.

    C. Your belief shapes your experience.

    D. But controlling your feelings doesn't always help.

    E. Would you like to use some ways that keep you calm during the hard times

    F. Somewhere in the world, someone has it a lot worse than you right at this moment.

    G. Where has it ever been written that everyone needs to go through the difficulties alone

  • 24、I’d planned to spend my weekend in the sun, potting flowers outdoors. But that was before the pair of crows. Out of nowhere, they had set up their base camp in our backyard.

We first discovered our feathered enemies on Friday morning. It was early, and the sound the birds made travelled through our neighborhood. I figured they’d go away soon. But, no. They were getting louder and probably annoying my neighbors nearly as much as us with the noise. I admit I got a little desperate.

Then, on Sunday afternoon, I looked out the kitchen window to see our dog Quatchi staring at something on the ground. I went to explore and found a small coal-black bird in the grass. Its eyes were milky, and it stayed perfectly still as my dog inched towards it. Only when Quatchi touched his nose to its head did it walk away. I grabbed the dog and locked him inside and came back with my camera.

It never occurred to me that the young would be hanging out on the ground, growing and gaining strength as its parents guarded it from above. The second I saw this little creature I forgave the crows.

To be honest, I’ve never been much of a bird person. I also have a healthy respect for birds, and by healthy I mean slightly fear-based. They’re basically living dinosaurs.

I wish they’d chosen another backyard. There are only so many sunny days in Seattle, and I still can’t do any gardening out there. But I’m also grateful that I got to see this little bit of nature unfold up close. It’s pretty amazing.

The experience has also reinforced my desire to create a beautiful backyard garden that attracts lots of bees, butterflies, and yes, birds. They are welcome here.

A.She wanted to take some photos.

B.The dog kept making loud noises.

    A.decided to take it in

    B.appreciated knowing its growing process

C.fell in love with the pair of crows

D.planned to drive the crows away
