二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Every year, countless individuals are impacted by cancer. Our goal is to walk away from cancer as we give strength to those fighting this life-threatening disease. Walk Cancer Away invites everyone to participate in our annual family friendly walk event and join together to share the strong will power found inside each of us with those around us. With each step we take, with each story shared, and with each donation made we are one step closer to finding a cure. To date, we have raised over$700,000 for Dr. Nancy Kemeny's Colorectal Research Fund at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center(MSKCC), together with thousands of people supporting this cause over the last 12 years we are committed to.

Walk Cancer Away began as a walk in honor of James N. Rentas. Deeply influenced by his loss due to colorectal cancer, the Rentas family came together 12 years ago to help others who are suffering the disease. Dr. Nancy Kemeny at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, who was the doctor treating James N. Rentas, mirrors that same goal. Her efforts and that of her team at MSKCC are focused on researching to overcome the disease and find a cure.

Together they have made great advancements over the years and have provided years of life for those facing the disease. In many cases, their continued efforts have led to full relief of the cancer in patients. With the deepest gratitude we are thankful to all those who support and participate in the event each year, because without you this would not be possible.

Although Walk Cancer Away started just 12 years ago, we are forever honored to be able to join in this event that so many of us find so close to our hearts. We ask you, your family, and your friends to join in this year's Walk Cancer Away Event.

1What does Walk Cancer Away intend to do?

A.To contact those suffering from cancer. B.To give strength to cancer patients' family.

C.To help find a way to defeat cancer. D.To share experiences from cancer victims.

    2According to paragraph 2, James N. Rentas

A.lost his family B.died of cancer

C.did research on cancer D.founded Walk Cancer Away

3Why does the author make this speech?

A.To call on people to join in the activity. B.To raise money for cancer research.

C.To express thanks to all the participants. D.To introduce the history of an event.

  • 22、If you move to a new school, you’ll have to worry whether or not you’ll make friends. Here are some simple suggestions which help you make new friends a lot easier.

Try speaking to the people next to you in class. As they’re close by, it makes sense to communicate with them first.

Have courage to speak to everyone in your class. You will probably stay with that class through your years at the new school, so it helps if you get on with them.

If you don’t have many friends in your class, try and make new friends in your subject lessons. You can also talk with them at lunchtime and after school.

Join a lunchtime or after-school club. You’ll get to meet kids of all years that way.

Ask your teacher to pair you with another pupil.

Use your celebrity status! Since you’re the new person, you’ll have gained celebrity status, which you can use for a couple of weeks. Talk to people, remember to smile and always be open and friendly. Listen carefully to what others have to say so as to make them feel important.

As you grow older, it’s natural to make new friends and sometimes that means you grow apart from your old friends. So try and make time for all your friends. Why not introduce your different sets of friends so you can all go to the cinema or bowling together?

But what if a friendship group is pushing you out? If this is happening to you, try and ask someone you’re friendly with what is happening. If the whole group is leaving you out, try to find new people to spend time with at lunchtime.

1According to the passage, moving to a new school is _______.

    A. interesting   B. exciting

    C. worrying   D. boring

2According to the author, what should we do when we move to a new school?

    A. Sit close to friendly classmates.

    B. Try to study well to gain others’ trust.

    C. Try our best to help our new classmates.

    D. Take possible chances to communicate with others.

3To make our classmates feel that they are important to us, we should ______.

    A. listen to them carefully   B. be friendly and open to them

    C. smile while talking with them   D. make use of our celebrity status

  • 23、Scrolling through Hudson Valley Craigslist one night, I come across a sprawling — but cozy — oak-floored Victorian house that’s perfectly isolated despite being two hundred years old. I buy it for a hundred and fifty thousand dollars, without having to borrow any money from my parents.

Moving is a breeze. Even at the end of the brisk drive upstate, I’m in a sea of B. L. M. signs and rainbow flags, and nobody wants to shoot me for my political beliefs. In fact, I receive several compliments on my electric pickup truck, and everyone calls me Chief.

Upon my arrival, the family of mice living in my house pack up and leave, but not before thoughtfully scrubbing the oven of their waste.

I chop so much wood for the natural-stone fireplace that my hands become calloused (长了老茧) (hotly) and I put on twenty pounds of muscle. Every day I wake up at 5 A. M. to volunteer at a nearby animal sanctuary, because the valley’s grand sunrises have transformed me, overnight, into a morning person.

A seemingly rude but bighearted neighbor, Meeks, shovels the snow from my driveway and tends to the yard, unprompted. When I offer to pay him for his work, Meeks says, “Please. I’m a huge fan of your writing—the art you put into the world is payment enough.”

At my favorite local dive, I play in a weekly poker game with a cast of colorful townies, like in “Nobody’s Fool.” We drink boilermakers all night but always make it home safely because the sparkling-clean Main Street trolley runs twenty-four hours a day.

Though I’m undoubtedly rich, and the value of my house has skyrocketed, my presence doesn’t interfere with the area’s cost of living, which remains low thanks to policies enacted by President Ocasio-Cortez.

My dad, a retired fighter pilot who’s always respected me, buys a small Cessna so he and my mom can fly up to visit once a month. Whenever he’s in town, my dad makes improvements to the house without being asked. When I offer to pay him, he says, “Please. Just seeing you this happy, successful, and physically powerful is payment enough.”

I don’t miss going to concerts, comedy shows. or the doctor. Most nights I’m content to sit by the fire with Meeks, sipping on applejack and playing cribbage, a simple game that I intuitively grasp.

I make frequent trips into Manhattan to see my friends, who’ve collectively decided not to have kids so we can hang more. They chuckle as I complain about the city prices, their envy subtle but detectable. Stirred by my glow, one by one they buy (slightly less impressive) houses down the road from mine.

A few years later, I adapt a novel into a critically acclaimed HBO mini-series, which I co-create with my pal and professional equal, John Oliver.

On my ninetieth birthday, I pass away in my sleep, calloused hands folded (hotly) on my barrel chest. The whole valley turns up for my Viking funeral, where the mayor puts the key to the city or township or whatever around my tree-trunk neck.

When my next of kin offers to pay for the funeral service, the mayor says, “Please. His time here, upstate, was payment enough.”

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had entered a new school so he had no friends yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.

At school, Asad could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Asad quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.

Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class but he was a very arrogant boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.

When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar?” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.

When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad’s, as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.
