21、The global population growing, the climate is warming, and, no surprise, the demand for energy is steadily increasing. We need to use less energy in any way that we can.
German design student Tobias Tribenbacher, from the University of the Arts Berlin, has created a street light called Papilio in response to global sustainability initiatives, saying that he initially chose to create a city-facing streetlight due to such lights’ role in tight pollution.
Papilio can be mounted to walls or set up as a freestanding lantern. The lamp should ideally be placed between three to six metres above ground, where ground-level winds are the strongest. The lamp is shaped like a pinwheel that acts as a wind turbine (涡轮), catching the wind to produce its own energy. It also has a rechargeable battery that stores electricity, so the lamp can operated even on less windy days.
Another key component of the lamp is the light itself. The warm- colored light doesn’t draw the attention of insects, and it uses an infrared(红外线的)sensor so that the light is only started by nearby motion, reducing its contribution to light pollution.
Aside from saving public space and beautifying streets, the streetlight’s design is also a visual signal of clean energy in action.“Design not only determines how street lights are working. It can also shape our attitude towards them and consequently affect how we use them,” Tobias Tribenbacher says.“Because energy creation is often an invisible process, projects such as these help the production of electricity become comprehensible.”
The lamp’s ability to change wind power into electricity can also be a huge benefit to naturally windy areas. And since it doesn’t require any electrical infrastructure (基础设施), there will be an opportunity to fix the street lights in remote settings or places where infrastructure innovations can be cost-prohibitive.
Just as lanterns create the character of streets and squares, Papilio is envisioned as a public sustainability statement that motivates residents to take part in transforming our cities into climate-friendly, future-proof environments.

A.To tackle light pollution.
B.To reduce biodiversity loss.
C.To beautify the city he lives in.
D.To draw public attention to waste.
【2】Which of the following is the feature of the street light?
A.It occupies a large space.
B.It can be fixed anywhere.
C.It is switched off by hand.
D.It is unattractive to insects.
【3】What do Tribenbacher’s words in Paragraph5 imply?
A.The climate crisis is tough to address.
B.Design can facilitate our comprehension.
C.We must take action to save clean energy.
D.We know little about electricity generation.
【4】What is the purpose of the text?
A.To stress the importance of innovation.
B.To introduce a wind- powered street light.
C.To advocate environmental sustainability.
D.To analyze the sustainability of the street light.
22、The Chinese put up with a lot living in the world’s most populous country: standing on over-crowded trains for 40 hours; sleeping outside hospitals to secure a doctor’s appointment; waiting more than a year to earn a driver’s license.
Add getting a U.S. entry visa to the list. Applicants here have waited as long as 60 days to secure an appointment at one of five U.S. consulate locations in China that process visas. There, they’re often greeted by long lines, followed by a face-to-face interview that can end badly in a matter of seconds.
Now there are only about 100 U.S. visa officers in China, facing considerable challenges during the summer when tourists and students travel the most. “It’s not easy work,” Charles Bennett, minister-counselor for Consulate Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, said to his staff. “You’re making, in some cases, life-changing decisions many times a day, and that can cause great tiredness.”
To adapt, US consulate services expanded their hours, took on about a dozen additional staff and hope to have another 20 officers by spring. More facilities are also being expanded.
Despite the shocking numbers, the embassy remains dogged by charges that it rejects applicants unreasonably and that the process is unfairly burdensome. “I’m fed up,” said Wendy Liu, 24. The single woman from Beijing said she was recently refused a visa and told to re-apply when her personal life and finances were more stable. “I’ll go anywhere but the U.S. now,” she said. “I thought America was supposed to be a country of freedom.”
To visit the US, Chinese nationals must prove that they have enough money and family or business ties that make it likely they’ll return to China. The Department of Homeland Security said it did not keep records on how many Chinese overstay their visas.
Student visas can be refused on grounds of national security. Beijing native Tan Ge, 25, believes he was not accepted after he stated his interests in infrared technology and nanoelectronics on his application. He now studies in Canada after being forced to abandon a full scholarship to Arizona State University.
By its very nature, the on-the-spot process at the U.S. Embassy can feel unbearable to Chinese applicants, who are asked to take their bank statements, property deeds, marriage licenses and HUKOU, a Chinese household ID.
“It made me feel very uncomfortable,” said Xu Yong, 28, a journalist who needed a business visa last month to cover a conference in New York. “They made me feel like someone from a Third World country up to no good.”
After giving his fingerprints, Xu waited to be called for his interview, sitting in an area that was as quiet as a library. Each passing minute seemed to be as long as a century.
After an hour, Xu was called with three other people to a window for their interview. Two were rejected before his turn. Then the American officer, speaking fluent Chinese, reached for Xu’s paperwork, asked some simple questions and said, “Congratulations.”
“I was so nervous. The first thing I did when I got out was to call my mom and tell her I passed,” Xu said. “She was the one who warned me it wasn’t going to be easy.”
【1】We can learn from Paragraph 2 that in China ________.
A.you may quickly be rejected for a U.S. visa after a long wait

C.To stress what a hard-won success it is to get a U.S. visa.
D.To persuade readers out of working or studying abroad.
23、Scientists say the plant enset, an Ethiopian staple (主食), could be a new superfood and a lifesaver in the face of climate change. “This is a crop that can play a really important role in addressing food security and sustainable development,” said a university professor in Awasa, Ethiopia.
Enset, or “false banana”, is a close relative of the banana but is consumed only in one part of Ethiopia. The banana-like fruit of the plant is inedible (无法食用的), but the stems and roots can be processed to make porridge and bread.
However, Ethiopia is isolated (隔离) by dry lowlands, which are unsuitable for enset to grow. And the procedures for enset raising and preparing require special knowledge. Therefore, despite its wild relatives distributing across Africa, enset is only used as a crop in Ethiopia and has never been widely adopted elsewhere.
Using agricultural surveys and modelling work, scientists found the crop could potentially feed more than 100 million people and boost food security in Ethiopia and other African countries.
Study researcher Dr James Borrell, of the Royal Botanic Gardens, said planting enset as an alternative crop for tough times could help support food security. “It’s got some really unusual characteristics that make it absolutely unique as a crop,” he said. Reaching ten meters tall, as few as 15 enset plants can feed a person for a year. Also, it has flexible harvest times, stores well, and is relatively drought and disease tolerant. All these features have earned it the name, “the tree against hunger”.
There is growing interest in seeking new plants to feed the world. Nearly half of all the calories we eat come from three species - rice, wheat, and corns. “We need to diversify the plants we use globally as a staple because all our eggs are in a very small basket at the moment,” said Dr Borrell.
【1】What can we know about enset?
A.It is widely consumed in Ethiopia.
B.Its stems and roots can serve as a staple.
C.It is mainly grown in dry lowlands.
D.It distributes throughout the world.
【2】What affects the wide adoption of enset?
A.Lack of related knowledge.
B.Poor quality of farmland.
C.Low productivity.
D.Strict storage condition.
【3】Which aspect of enset is talked about in paragraph 5?
A.Its advantages.
B.Its edibility.
C.Its variety.
D.Its distribution.
【4】What does Dr Borrell mean in the last paragraph?
A.People are fed up with existing staples.
B.A world of biodiversity is needed.
C.Crop varieties should be increased.
D.Food security has been addressed.
24、In a tiny, lab-grown garden, the first seeds ever sown in lunar dirt have come up. This small crop, planted in samples (样本) returned by Apollo tasks, offers hope that astronauts could someday grow their own food on the moon.
But plants planted in lunar dirt grew more slowly and were thinner than others grown in volcanic(火山的) material from Earth, researchers report 12 May in Communications Biology. That finding suggests that farming on the moon would take a lot more than a gardening skills.
“Ah! It’s so cool!” says a botanist (植物学家) Richard Barker. “Ever since these samples came, back, there’s been botanists that wanted to know what would happen if you grew plants in them,” says Barker, who wasn’t involved in the study. “But everyone knows those precious samples are priceless, and so you can understand why NASA was unwilling to publish them.”
The team planted seeds in tiny pots that each held about a gram of dirt. Four pots were filled with samples returned by Apollo 11, another four with Apollo 12 samples and a final four with dirt from Apollo 17. Another 16 pots were filled with earthly volcanic material used in past experiments to copy moon dirt. All were grown under LED lights in the lab and watered with nutrients.
“Nothing really compared to when we first saw the seedlings as they were coming up in the lunar dirt,” says Anna-Lisa Paul, a plant biologist. “That was a moving experience. We could not speak when we watched the very first plants growing in unique materials.”
Plants grew in all the pots of lunar dirt, but none grew as well as those planted in earthly material. “The healthiest ones were just smaller,” Paul says. The moon-grown plants were tiny. Faced with that, explorers need to do more research to let plants grow strongly on the moon. I believe we will succeed in time.
【1】What does the research on plants grown in the lunar dirt show?
A.Growing foods on the moon is necessary.
B.Skills are the key to farming on the moon.
C.Farming’ on the moon needs many factors.
D.Astronauts want to grow food on their own.
【2】What can we learn from what Barker said?
A.Some plants need planting in special soils.
B.Botanists are interested in studying new things.
C.It is a selfish action for NASA to keep the secret.
D.The samples brought from the moon are valuable.
【3】What does the author think of planting on the moon?
A.It is practical.
B.It is hopeful.
C.It only attracts astronauts.
D.It challenges most experts.
【4】What is the best title for this text?
A.The First Plant Has Been Grown in Moon Dirt
B.Astronauts Have Brought Things Worth Spreading
C.Botanists Have Found a New Kind of Plant Lately
D.Farming on the Moon Has Been Accepted by People

A Foothold in Life
A dozen children ran around laughing and playing in my friend’s yard, while we parents sat chatting and sipping cool summer drinks. The barbecue had been cleared away when our host announced a surprise. A huge movable rock wall was loaded in, which was about twelve feet wide, made of gray molded plastic with indented footholds that stretched straight up for what looked like at least a hundred feet. The enthusiastic kids swiftly lined up to give it a try, and with the complete fearlessness most children possess, scrambled to the top and rang the bell that hung at the highest point. There wasn’t really anything to be afraid of since they were belted into place. Three people could climb side by side and talk to each other, so gradually the adults tried it, too.
“Come on; let’s go get in line,” my husband Neil urged. “No, you go ahead without me.” I had all sorts of good excuses: I don’t have the right shoes; I forgot my sunglasses; I have to help the hostess. I have a unique talent for seeing unthinkable danger in almost every situation, and this scene seemed dangerous to me. I watched everyone else having fun, though, and finally convinced myself to try it.
With all the nerve I could gather, I started the climb. The belt wrapped around me like a diaper so there was no way to fall. Yes, I thought, this is fun and safe! Concentrating on each foothold, I slowly made my way up. I avoided looking down to prevent any sudden panic, and within a few minutes I made it to the top and proudly rang the bell.
“Woo hoo!” my daughters called up to me. “Way to go, Col!” Neil yelled.
I enjoyed my success and the enjoyable view of fields and farmland until I realized there was a line below me waiting for a turn. It was time to go down.
