二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Over the past 25 years, British society has changed a great deal—or at least many parts of it have. In some aspects, however, very little has changed, particularly where attitudes are concerned. Ideas about social class—whether a person belongs to the “working class” or the “middle class”—are one area in which changes have been extremely slow.

In the past, the working class tended (往往) to be paid less than the middle class such as teachers and doctors. As a result of this and also of the fact that working-class people’s jobs were generally much less secure, differences in lifestyles and attitudes came into existence. A typical working-class man would collect his wages on Friday evening. Then, as was widely believed, having given his wife her “housekeeping,” the man would go out and squander (挥霍) the rest on beer and betting.

The old style of what a middle-class man did with his money was perhaps closer to the truth. He tended—and this is still true today—to take a longer-term view. Not only did he regard buying a house as the most important thing, but he also considered the education of his children as extremely important. Both of these provided him and his family with security. Only in very few cases did workers have the chance (or the education and training) to make such long term plans.

Nowadays, a great deal has changed. In a large number of cases, factory workers earn as much as—if not more than—their middle-class managers. Social security and laws have made it less necessary than before to worry about “tomorrow.” Working-class people seem to be slowly losing the feelings of inferiority (自卑) they held in the past. In fact, there has been a growing tendency (趋势) over the past few years for the middle class to feel slightly ashamed of their position.

The changes in both lifestyles and attitudes are probably most easily seen among younger people. They generally tend to have very similar tastes in music and clothes; they spend their money on having a good time, and save for holidays or longer-term plans when necessary. There seems to be much less difference between groups of people than there were in previous generations.

1What is the article mainly about?

A.The gaps between the classes in Britain. B.Some changes about British society.

C.A rough introduction to different classes. D.Various conflicts existing in the UK.

2How does the author explain the differences between the two classes?

A.By making a comparison. B.By listing accurate numbers.

C.By using an expert’s words. D.By analyzing cause and effect.

3Which of the following aspects remains practically unchanged?

    A.Feelings of self-worth. B.Ideas about social class.

C.Job security and income. D.Ideas about entertainment.

  • 22、Poison frogs across Central and South America display some of the brightest colors in the animal kingdom. The way such creatures evolved to be just colorful enough to signal their toxic (有毒的) defense-but not so colorful that they become vulnerable to predators (捕食者) — has long been a grey area for scientists. Initially, predators would not have known that bright colors signal toxicity, and therefore would have eaten, and then become ill-these easily-spotted few members of a species with the colorful mutation (突变). In theory, this should make it virtually impossible for the aposematic (防护色的) pioneers to pass on their genes to their offspring, allowing for the mutation to take hold in the population.

To get to the bottom of this dilemma, Karl Loeffler Henry, a researcher at Carleton University launched the new study. Loeffler Henry’s team pored over data from the family trees of 1,100 species of frogs, newts and salamanders, and categorized them into one of five groups. On one end of range are the creatures with bright blues, yellows and reds. On the other are species that blend in perfectly with their surroundings. Between these poles, the scientists place species with camouflaged (伪装的) tops and colorful bottoms in various degrees. These tend to display their dramatic halves only when trying to defend themselves from predators.

The team used nine different computer models to test the potential evolutionary routes the species in the bright aposematic group might have taken to evolve this way. In the end, the researchers realized that they all kind of followed a similar pattern, evolving from species in the middle of that range, those whose colors are hidden unless in danger.

There have also been other theories proposed, but this new theory presents a mechanism that is likely to play a role in the evolution of anti-predator defense in various prey groups and a wide range of different predators. Possibly, it might inspire the exploration of evolution of warning coloration in other animal groups as well.

【1】What remained unclear to scientists in the past?

A.How the proper shades of the colors are evolved.

B.How these creatures signal their toxic defence.

C.Which colors are better at scaring predators away.

D.Which creatures are at higher risk of being eaten.

【2】What do the underlined words “this dilemma” in paragraph 3 refer to?

A.The predators clearly knew about the toxicity but still feed on them.

B.The first colorful members have bright colors but can avoid predators.

C.The first colorful members were eaten but the mutation was passed on.

D.The predators became seriously ill but their population continued to boom.

【3】What do we know about the new study?

A.The colors of all those species were either bright or grey.

B.The aposematic group evolved by following nine routes.

C.The researchers observed these different species in the wild.

D.The origin of the evolution turned out to be the hidden colors.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.Other theories of the evolution.

    B.Other animals’ evolution routes.

    C.The drawbacks of the study.

    D.The significance of the study.

  • 24、   It was about a year ago when a positive change in a community started.

I was in fifth grade, and at the time I wrote a paper about the migration of the monarch butterfly and received a perfect score. I was so happy. I called my grandmother, Nana, to tell her the exciting news. All of my talk about monarchs evoked memories from Nana’s childhood. “I remember when I was a girl out on the farm,” she said, “those black and orange butterflies were a common sight. But there do seem to be fewer monarchs fluttering (翩翩飞舞) around the neighborhood each summer. Perhaps we should try to find out where they’ve gone.”

Nana and I decided to investigate.

That weekend, Nana met me at the public library and we started our research. Our research produced plenty of information. The best information was this: it doesn’t take lots of money, equipment (设备), or government organizations to save the monarch butterflies; it takes only a little bit of land, and dedicated (专心致志的) people to create what’s called a Monarch Waystation. When I read this, an idea came to mind. “What if we set up our own Monarch Waystation?” I suggested.

“We will need several people to help us!” she replied.

The next week, Nana presented the idea to her garden club; I talked to my friends and neighbors. Nana’s garden club decided to plant a butterfly garden next to the city park. The library put together a display of gardening and butterfly books. The editor of the local newspaper wrote an informative article on how to make our community monarch-friendly. As spring turned into summer, those volunteers also worked to weed (除杂草) and care for the public gardens. We all waited and watched to see whether our plan would work—it did work! Over twenty black and orange butterflies were noticed visiting the Waystations. As summer progressed, the monarchs grew more plentiful.

It happened on a day when the sun was shining and the sky was a deep blue. As monarchs fluttered around us, people laughed and danced; Nana cried tears of happiness. It was truly a meaningful experience.

A.It should be built in a park.

B.It can be created and used easily.
