21、In recent years, especially during the 1960s, there was much discussion about "the brain drain (人才流失) ," which dealt with the problem of students and learned people who left their own countries for other countries that offered better chances for study, research, and employment. For example, according to a report from U.N., between 1962 and 1966 more than 50 percent of all engineering graduates of Iran and 14 percent of Iranian (伊朗的) scientists left their country for work abroad. Over 30percent of Chilean (智利的) engineers and 15 percent of Turkish (土耳其的)physicians also went to work in other countries. Probably the greatest brain drain occurred among young scientists who had gone abroad to study. Many of them had planned to return to their countries to teach but chose to remain in more industrialized nations where they were able to continue their work and their research in fields in which there were no job possibilities at home. The countries that attracted most of these scientists were the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Canada, and Australia.
Recent studies show that the brain drain to the United States may be decreasing. Many foreign scientists are going home again, and in some cases American scientists are leaving the United States for employment in other countries. The main reasons are that good jobs are becoming fewer here, money for national research has been sharply cut, and university fellowships reduced too. However, in the field of medicine the drain to the United States still goes on. Today more than one of every five American doctors is foreign-born, and several thousand foreign doctors immigrate to the United States each year. Over eighty countries have asked the State Department to send students who are skilled in important fields such as medicine back home when their study programs are over.
【1】Which of the following is not the reason for "the brain drain'"?
A.Better chances of study.
B.Better research condition.
C.Good job possibility.
D.Good housing.
【2】How many American doctors are foreign-born?
A.More than 20 percent.
B.About half of them.
C.Several thousand.
D.About 15 percent.

22、In 2012, the Tower of London welcomed two new inhabitants: a pair of ravens(乌鸦) named Jubilee and Grip. Their arrival celebrated the bicentenary(二百周年) of Charles Dickens’s birth. This Grip was the third of the Tower ravens to be named after the novelist’s own pet birD. One of his predecessors(前辈) was resident during World War Two; he and his mate Mabel were the only ravens to survive a bombing attack on the Tower.
Dickens’s Grip, who had an impressive vocabulary, appears as a character in the author’s fifth novel, Barnaby Rudge. On 28 January 1841, Dickens wrote to his friend George Cattermole: “my notion is to have [Barnaby] always in company with a pet raven, who is immeasurably more knowing than himself. To this end I have been studying my bird, and think I could make a very distinctive character of him.”
Unfortunately, just a few weeks after Dickens wrote that letter, Grip died, probably as a result of having stolen and eaten paint some months earlier. The bird had developed a strange habit – tearing sections off painted surfaces (including the family's carriage) and even drinking a quantity of white paint out of a tin. Dickens mourned his loss and wrote a humorous letter to his friend, the illustrator Daniel Maclise, about the raven’s death.
He related how, when Grip began to show signs of sickness, the vet was called and “administered a powerful dose of castor(蓖麻) oil”. Initially this seemed to have a positive effect and the author was thrilled to see Grip restored to his usual personality when he bit the coachman (who was used to the raven and took it in good humor). The following morning, Grip was able to eat “some warm porridge”, but his recovery was short liveD.
As Dickens wrote to Maclise, “On the clock striking twelve he appeared slightly upset, but soon recovered, walking twice or thrice along the coach-house, stopped to bark, exclaimed ‘Hello old girl’ (his favorite expression) and dieD. He behaved throughout with a decent manner, which cannot be too much admireD. .. The children seem rather glad of it. He bit their ankles. But that was play.”
【1】Which of the following is right about Dickens’s pet Grip?
A. he liked painting a lot.
B. he could speak English fluently.
C. he was quite ill before his death.
D. he and Mabel survived a bombing attack.
【2】Why did Dickens study his bird Grip?
A. Because the bird was very strange looking.
B. Because Dickens liked the bird immeasurably.
C. Because Barnaby needs a companion who was always with him.
D. Because Dickens wanted to base one character of his novel on him.
【3】What caused the death of Dickens’s Grip?
A. His old age.
B. His strange diet.
C. The killing of the coachman.
D. His bad habit of biting people.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. A bird in a novel.

C. The death of a birD.
D. Dickens and his bird
23、Four best pieces of festive music
Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach
One of the festive classics is Bach’s Oratorio, which was composed for the Christmas of 1734. It's divided into six parts — each with its own sound and story — that would have been performed separately on feast days during the Christmas season. Profound and reflective. it contains some of the most moving choruses you’ll ever hear.
The Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who wouldn't recognize the playful opening notes of the “The dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”. The tale of a toy soldier who comes to life,The Nutcracker is a firm Christmas mainstay and a master class in musical storytelling. Delightful and imaginative, the piece is the bread and butter of ballet companies around the world.
Messiah by George Frideric Handel
Handel’s crowning achievement is widely considered to be one of the most performed pieces during the holiday season around the world. Famous for its rousing “Halleluiah” chorus, the oratorio was surprisingly not intended for Christmas originally: Handel wrote it with the Easter Lent (四旬斋) in mind.
A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin
Britten This contemplative (冥想的) choral piece was inspired by English poetry from The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems, which Britten purchased while on a five-week voyage from New York to Britain in 1942. Featuring beautiful chants and heavenly harp parts, the piece feels both modern and ancient.

24、After millions of people around the country fill themselves with turkey and potatoes on Thanksgiving, they will wake up and think "I feel fat".
There are three psychological reasons that make someone more likely to"feel fat". The first is a high degree of internalization (内化).【1】. Media images prefer a thin ideal for women or a muscular ideal for men. When you internalize it, you’ve taken what society said people should look like. The second is self-objectification. People tie their overall self-worth to their physical appearance.【2】You' re extra sensitive to anything that could be taken the wrong way. So if something's going on in either their environment or their bodies that makes them feel a certain way, they're more likely to respond strongly to it.
【3】 You really are a little more bloated (浮肿)than usual. Maybe something strange is going on in your stomach that's making you a little gassy (胀气). Even drinking a ton of water can make you more bloated than usual. All are purely physical reactions that can cause that "I'm feeling fat" fear.
【4】And that expectation is kind of baked into the DNA of Thanksgiving itself. It's such a part of our culture to be sort of undervaluing our own bodies. This sense of "Oh, I'm so fat" or "Oh, I just ate so much" is culturally permitted. We can feel fat, in other words, because we think we should. It's valuable to emphasize that it's okay to enjoy food across the holidays. It's Thanksgiving. 【5】And this time, that boat is filled with gravy(肉汁).
A.Besides, everyone else is in the same boat.
B.The third reason is a high degree of sensitivity.
C.It's often the case that if we look good, we feel good.
D.The pickier you are about food, the healthier you will be
E.Sometimes what causes the fat feeling is just your body.
F.You expect to feel fat, so you convince yourself it's true.
G.People easily accept others' beliefs and attitudes as their own.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was seven, I found a watch while walking down the hallway of my school. The watch was expensive-looking, set with gold. As I picked it up, greedy (贪欲) suddenly came over me, and instead of turning it into the office like I should have, I became the owner of the watch.
When I got home from school, I found Mom cooking dinner in the kitchen. Thinking that she would be impressed, I held out my prize for her to see with a feeling of excitement and pride. Mom, however, was far from impressed. Instead, she was angry at her son keeping the watch instead of turning it in. Mom then ordered me to go straight back to school and take the watch to someone at the office. I started to argue, but after taking a good look at the expression on Mom’s face, I realized that would get me nowhere. There was nothing left for me to do but obey (服从).
I have to admit, I was rather angry with Mom for making me give up the watch. I felt that it was justly mine since I was the one who had found it. Yes, I knew she was right, but greed had forced me to keep the watch, and now pride wouldn’t allow me to admit that I had done something wrong. But time passed, and I forgot all about the lesson that I learned from the watch until fourteen years later.
While I was attending college, I had managed to get a job at a Walmart pushing carts off the parking lot. One morning, I found a checkbook (支票簿) that had been left in a shopping cart. Quickly, I took it to the customers service desk and gave it to the employee there so that the customer who had lost it could pick it up.
