21、When I graduated from college I dreamed of being a television news reporter. Having no experience, I had to work in a small town until I finally got my big break in the form of a job in Boston. I made it.
Soon, reality set in. I was too often sent to run after accused criminals out of courts, waiting outside of crime scene tape or at the doorstep of a family still crying for tragedy (悲剧). My breaking point came the day I accidentally informed a young woman that her mother died. It was the worst day of my professional life and the day I decided I no longer wanted to shine a light on these stories. My career was ebbing, and at the same time my personal life was too-I divorced.
My mom had always told me “When you’re feeling extremely upset, go help someone else.” So I started seeking out stories of people who had been in the news under tragic circumstances but were doing something inspiring with their lives: a young girl who was paralyzed (瘫痪的) by an accident but was uplifting her classmates with her positive spirit, a blind and autistic (自闭的) musician who learned to play 27 instruments, a disabled soldier who opened his own art studio. I started to tell and promote stories like them.
Over the last 10 years I have discovered my kindness gift: my ability to see the beautiful side of a person and reflect it back to them and the world. In telling stories of people turning their own hurt into acts of helping others I have become more sympathetic, more grateful and kinder. I have learned kindness is who we are, that our power for it is limitless and that, as we shine a light on it, it grows.

22、Find it hard to get started? Try these suggestions to help you rise and shine — and be effective from morning till night.
Get up earlier
Sleeping in can be a hard habit to break. 【1】 That is, you need to go to bed earlier and get up earlier. Start off by going to bed 15 minutes before your usual turn-in time and setting your alarm the same number of minutes earlier the next day. Gradually reset your sleep cycle until you get to your desired wake-up time.
Have a good stretch in bed
Before you even open your eyes, stretch every extremity for 15 seconds. Lift your arm and begin by stretching each fingers, next your hand, and then your arm. 【2】 End with a neck and back stretch that gets you out of bed. By doing this, you will increase the flow of blood through your system, providing your tissues with extra oxygen.
【3】
The fewer choices you have to make first thing, the better. Before going to bed, decide what you’re going to wear, work out which route you’ll take to work and pack your bag.
Check your morning calendar
Hang a large whiteboard in your kitchen. On it, write down all you need to know for that particular day, from doctor appointments to what you’re doing with your friends. Check it carefully while you sip your first cup of coffee or tea. 【4】
Get moving
【5】 But if you can get yourself into the habit, exercising in the morning can give you energy to jump-start your day.
A.Spend less time when packing.
B.Actually it involves two things.
C.Move on to your toes, feet and legs.
D.It will help you to structure your day.
E.Set your clothes out the night before.
F.Morning exercise can get you refreshed quickly.
G.If you’re a night owl, jogging early might sound like punishment.
23、As a musher (赶狗拉雪橇的人), you’re responsible for predicting every need your sled dogs have. Before they’re hungry, you’re already thawing (解冻) their next meal. Before they’re tired, you’re planning their next rest. You’re an athlete, but also a coach, nutritionist, and sports psychologist. And you’re their teammate, their family.
When I was growing up, my favorite books were by Gary Paulsen, who often wrote about kids overcoming difficulties in the wilderness, and my mom’s picture books of Alaska. I was especially drawn in by dogsledding; I’d put on Rollerblades (直排轮滑鞋) and tie my dog’s lead around my waist so she could pull me. And at 18, I did what instinctively felt right: I moved to Norway for a year to learn how to be a musher. I just sort of knew somehow that I should do this full-time. That year, living in a training camp 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, we studied how to build snow caves, care for the dogs, and somehow keep warm when temperatures went down to 30 degrees below zero. It was surreal and terrifying, but I loved it. Instantly I realized this was where I’d spent my life trying to get to.
This year I finished the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, the thousand-mile race across Alaska. It was the toughest thing I’ve ever done: 13 days of extremely hard work, where every foot we traveled was hard-won. While frozen places can be scary, the more time you spend in them, the more you realize how vulnerable (脆弱的) they are. With climate change, dogsledding could look very different in 50 years, or 20. It’s possible that current mushers could be among the last generations to travel like this. I hope we can be part of a tradition that stretches into the future, not just the past.
【1】What is a musher supposed to do?
A.Keep sled dogs’ meals warm.
B.Plan sled dogs’ mealtimes in advance.
C.Find sled dogs great dog families.

【2】Why did the author mention Gary Paulsen?
A.To discuss why people loved his works.
B.To prove kids are curious and determined.
C.To stress it’s challenging to become a musher.
D.To explain what inspired him to be a musher.
【3】How did the author’s training camp go?
A.It had many terrifying campers.
B.It lasted longer than he expected.
C.It led him to unexpected discoveries.
D.It was generally an enjoyable experience.
【4】What did the author find out while doing the Iditarod?
A.The popularity of mushers is fading.
B.There will be more mushers to come.
C.The frozen places are facing an uncertain future.
D.The frozen places will remain unchanged for long.
24、A Hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one’s leisure(闲暇的) time. By continually taking part in a particular hobby, one can acquire practical skill and knowledge in that area. Is travel a good hobby? Travel, in the youngest sort, is a part of education and, in the elder, a part of experience. Some may think otherwise. To them, visiting churches, castles, libraries, etc. is an absolute wastage of time. They may further say that one can read the account of these or see the films of the important places of the world. They forget that touch of actuality gives a different type of sensation and satisfaction.
Travelling may be an expensive hobby but it makes up for the financial loss. If a traveller has interest in life and its manifestations(表现), one can find much to keep oneself absorbed and happy. A student of any stream can definitely find something of his own interest and studies. One can definitely find everything that satisfies his cravings for knowledge and feelings.
As a hobby, travelling keeps us busy during leisure time; it is the best method to make use of time. Till a person breaks from dull routine, physically and mentally, one cannot find satisfaction. Travelling helps us to achieve this break. At a new place, one is curious to know and eager to gather all the unknown information about the place which he has neither read nor heard before and he gets thrills and surprises which keep the interest and enthusiasm alive and encourage us to keep our journey on.
While travelling, one comes across a number of people from varied backgrounds and places. By interacting with them, he comes to know about their traditions also. In case one has psychological bent of mind, one increases one’s experience and power to understand others. Understanding human nature is, perhaps, the best part of education. Travelling satisfies all demands of a good hobby-it is absorbing education and refreshment to the mind, body and soul.
