  • 21、   Teotihuacan was once one of the world's most important cities, but many things about it are still unknown today. How did the people live , and why did they abandon(放弃)their city? For years, answers to some of those questions have been buried in the Pyramid of the Moon. Now, findings in this ancient structure are helping archeologists learn more about Teotiuacan's people and their culture.

Until recently many experts thought Teotihuacan was a peaceful society mostly ruled by gentle and wise leaders. But recent findings in the Pyramid of the Moon show something else. Archeologists discovered a number of headless bodies. Most were foreigners, and other objects of power. Clearly the people and objects found inside the pyramid were offerings.

However, the findings in the pyramid are difficult to interpret. "These findings are like sentences." says archeologist Leonardo Lopez Lujan," but we don't have all the words… so they're hard to read." Despite these problems, several archeologists have concluded this; Teotihuacan was not a society governed by peaceful rulers. " In reality, officials used human sacrifice(祭品)says archeologist Saburo Sugiyama," to control the people. "The city probably also had a powerful army.

Who were the city leaders? Scientists don't know. They have not found a king buried in the pyramid or any status of Teotihuacan's rulers. But archeologists continue to search for them. They hope to learn more about the pyramid's creators and one of the world's most powerful ancient cities.

1What is this passage mainly about?

A.Discoveries in the Pyramid of the Moon.

B.An ancient leader who had the Pyramid of the Moon built.

C.Why the people of Teotihuacan abandoned their city.

D.How the Pyramid of the Moon was built in Teotihuacan.

2Which of the following have NOT been found in the Pyramid of the Moon?

    A.Weapons. B.The bodies of kings.

    C.Animal bones. D.Human bones.

3The underlined word " interpret" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “   ”.

    A.create B.discover

    C.imagine D.explain

4According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.The people and animals in the pyramid died of disease.

B.Most of the dead bodies in the pyramid were the Teotihuacan's people.

C.Rulers sacrificed humans to control the Teotihuacan's people.

D.Tcotihuacan had a powerful army led by gentle and wise leaders.

  • 22、   There's a battle storming in the streets of America. Anyone who regularly rides a bicycle knows all about this. Some motorists shout at two-wheeled travelers, who slow traffic. A few will do even worse.

The New York Times reports that incidents of aggression toward bicycle riders appear to be growing. Even though actually every state allows bicyclists the same right as motorists to use the streets, many drivers still refuse to accept this. They view themselves as Kings of the Road --- an impression that has been strongly built by the transportation planning profession, which has designed our cities as if people didn't exist outside of their cars.

But a big new idea to settle this conflict and improve life in the streets for everyone is now taking root among community activists, urban planners and traffic engineers.

“Too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars, They're unsafe for people on foot or bike. Now, in communities across the country, a movement is growing to complete the streets. States, cities and towns are asking their planners, engineers and designers to build road networks that welcome all citizens," declares the website of a new organization promoting this idea, "Complete the Streets", the best idea to hit our communities since pizza, or even the bicycle itself.

My home of Minneapolis is one of the biking capitals of America. But it hasn't always been that way. When I moved here many years ago, I was shocked at the strong hostility directed toward me whenever I dared ride my bike down the street. Drivers would suddenly turn in my direction, and then laugh as they nearly knocked me onto the ground.

As the number of bikes on Minneapolis streets has grown, people have become much more comfortable sharing the road with two-wheelers. Indeed, I get the impression that most motorists now envy rather than hate me, and can't wait to get home where they can jump on their own bikes. This will happen everywhere as more and more Americans discover biking as a great way to get around, save money, lose weight, protect the planet and have fun.

【1】Who cause the traffic problem according to the motorists?

    A.Bicycle riders.

    B.Urban planners.

    C.Traffic engineers.

    D.Community activists.

【2】The problem of the battle in the streets is most probably rooted in________.

    A.weight losing

    B.city planning

    C.money saving

    D.global warming

【3】What is the movement "Complete the Streets" aimed at?

    A.Relieving traffic jams.

    B.Promoting walking and bicycling.

    C.Building more road networks.

D.Assessing the impact of the conflict.

【4】What is the purpose of this text?

    A.To present a problem.

    B.To praise the bicyclists.

    C.To describe a change.

    D.To blame the car riders.

  • 23、   Cheerleading(拉拉队)has a rich history in the United States. 1 Even professional sports teams have cheerleadersso those who love to cheer can continue the sport into adulthood.

Organized cheering started at Princeton University in 1884, when the crowd created a cheer to inspire its team. In 1898, Tom Peebles became the first cheerleader when he led the crowd at the University of Minnesota. 2In 1923, cheerleading expanded to women.

Cheerleading has grown considerably since its origins. 3 In addition, every team in the NFL has a cheerleading squad(队), as well as the majority of NBA teams.

4 From 1982 to 2006, 45 major injuries occurred during high school cheerleading events, with two of those injuries leading to deaths. Of the 45 injuries, 14 of them led to permanent disabilities. During the same yearsone female college student diedwhile an additional five ended up with a disability and 11 suffered serious injuries.

To help keep safe in the sport, the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators has made some rules that members must follow. 5 During a forward roll, the top person must begin in a non-inverted(非倒立的)position and keep hand-to-hand contact with two bases throughout. These moves must also include a spotter who can protect the top person’s head and neck in case of a fall.

  • 24、   Most adults firmly believe that as kids reach their teens, they start to take crazy risks that get them in trouble. Do teenagers simply love taking all risks much more than adults? A recent study suggests otherwise.

Scientists designed a simple experiment involving 33 teenagers and three other age groups. In the experiment, the researchers tried to distinguish between two very different kinds of risk-taking. The first they called a willingness to take known risks (when the probability of winning is clear) and the second they called a willingness to take unknown risks (when the possibility of success is uncertain).

The study offered participants the opportunity to play two kinds of games. They had the chance to win money, with one game offering a known risk and the other offering an unknown risk. On each round of the game, each participant had to choose between taking a sure $5 and known or unknown risks of winning a lot more. If on one particular round they had picked the $5 for sure choice, then they got $5. But if on that round they had chosen to take a risk, the rules of the game will determine whether or not they had won. If they did win, they went home with between $8 and $125. And, of course, if they lost, they went home with nothing.

What the scientists found was really quite surprising. It turned out that the average teenager was very hesitant when risks were known—more careful than college students or parents-aged adults, and about as careful as grandparent-aged adults. This means that when the risks were known, teenagers were not risky in their behavior at all. Only when the risks were unclear did teenagers choose them more often than other groups. Under those kinds of conditions, they were much more willing to take a risk than any other group.

So, what does all of this mean? The research suggests that adults should probably focus more energy on trying to educate teenagers about risks than limiting them. Teenagers who understand the risks associated with a decision are more likely to be careful in their behavior.

1This experiment was carried out by

A.dividing the teens into three groups

B.comparing the reactions to different risks

C.giving equal amount of awards to the participants

D.observing the emotional changes of the teenager

2When facing known risks, teenagers tended to be ________.

    A.ambitious B.cautious C.anxious D.curious

3Which group in the study were more likely to take unknown risks?

    A.Teenagers. B.College students. C.Parent-aged adults. D.Grandparent-aged adults.

4According to the study, parents should focus on ________.

A.guaranteeing children to be careful B.setting age limits on dangerous activities

C.respecting teens to make their own choices D.guiding teens to learn more about the effect of risks
