  • 25、Most people follow others blindly just because they feel it safe to follow a large number of people. In some rare cases it might be right to follow the crowd, but in most cases this can be a big mistake. Actually there are reasons why we shouldn’t follow the crowd blindly.

People often follow the crowd because they aren’t sure about the direction they should take. This means a large number of people could be following others without understanding what’s right and what’s wrong! This makes more people follow and as a result most people move in a certain direction even if it isn’t right.

What could it lead to? Actually, a man who wants to be successful always hopes for others’ guidance and he usually follows the same path of most people, but the question this man never asks himself is: are all of those people successful? Of course not! If you want to follow a crowd, then follow a successful one. However, in real life you’ll only find one successful person among hundreds of people, and that’s why following the crowd makes no sense at all.

The disadvantage is that most people act emotionally(感情用事地) without thinking wisely. If you always follow others because they’re greater than you in number, then sooner or later you’ll discover that you’re taking emotional decisions you might regret later.

However, should we never follow the crowd? No. I’m not trying to say you should never follow the crowd, but instead I’m just asking you to think wisely before you take a decision. If you find others are right, there is no problem in following them, but if you have doubts about the direction they’re moving in, don’t follow them blindly.

【1】According to the passage, most people like to follow others because ________.

A.they feel it kind of safe

B.they don’t want to be different

C.they believe they take the right direction

D.they want to make good impressions on people

【2】Which is right according to the author’s opinions?

A.It is wrong to follow other people

B.It takes much time to think wisely

C.You shouldn’t be sorry for what you have done

D.You should use your brain before following others

【3】What is the text mainly about?

    A.Results of following others

B.Reasons for not following others blindly

    C.Advantages of making wise decisions

D.Ways of finding successful people to follow

【4】Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

  • 26、In the 1930s, a young traveler was climbing the French Alps(阿尔卑斯山). He arrived at a big piece of land without living things. It was ugly. It was the kind of place you hurried away from.

Then, suddenly, the young traveler stopped on the way. In the middle of this large land there was an old man. On his back was a bag of seeds. He dug a hole in the ground. Then from the bag he took a seed and put it in the hole. He did this again and again. Later, the old man told the traveler, “I’ve planted over 10, 000 seeds. Perhaps only a tenth of them will grow.” The old man’s wife and son had died, and this was how he chose to spend his final years. “ I want to do something useful to make a difference,” he said.

Twenty years later, the traveler was not young any longer. He returned to the place. What he saw amazed him. He could not believe his eyes. The land was covered with a beautiful forest two miles wide and five miles long. Birds were singing, animals were playing, and wild flowers were here and there. The traveler stood there remembering the lifeless picture of the place that it once used to be. A beautiful forest stood there now, all because someone cared.

    根据短文内容判断正、误。(注意: 考生将答题卡相应位置涂黑。正确的涂 “A”, 错误的涂“B”)

【4】Twenty years later, the big land became a beautiful land with forest, birds, animals and wild flowers.

【5】From this story, we know that no matter how impossible something is, we can make a difference as long as we try our best.

  • 27、Slavery (奴隶制) was one of the darkest periods in American history. It cannot be ignored. This term, we are reading a novel called The Longest Memory by British author Fred D’Aguiar. Its story is told through the eyes of many different people. From their narration, we can see what society looked like during the period before the American Civil War (美国内战).

The Longest Memory tells the story of a brave and intelligent young slave, Chapel, who falls in love with the daughter of a plantation owner (种植园主). They decide to head to the north, where black men can marry white women. However, the boy’s father, Whitechapel, doesn’t agree with him and causes him to be caught. Chapel is then whipped (鞭打) to death.

Why does Whitechapel report his son’s plan to the plantation owner? This is one thing that confuses many readers. But as we understand each character in depth, we can figure it out. Whitechapel teaches young slaves to obey their masters. Therefore, his own master respects him a great deal. He starts to think that slaves can live comfortably as long as they listen to the plantation owner.

This belief is based on the idea that slavery will never end. However, Chapel is educated. He sees a more colorful world in the books he reads and wants to be free. He represents change for the future, which his dad fears. Whitechapel’s belief might be a good way for slaves to protect themselves. But that doesn’t change the fact that slavery is inhumane (不人道的) and must end. Pioneers (先锋) like Chapel should be encouraged.

【1】The story of the The Longest Memory was based on ________.

A.slavery in the pre-Civil War US

    B.the American Civil War

    C.the first World War

    D.the American Revolution

A.they want to go on an adventure

B.they want to make more money

    C.they can get married there

D.they want to live with Chapel’s father

【3】According to the author, why does Whitechapel report his son?

A.He wants to protect his son and the girl.

B.He thinks slaves should follow their master’s orders.

C.He is worried that his son will be punished by the owner.

D.He doesn’t want to be separated from his son.

    【4】Chapel represents people who ________.

A.want to live comfortably forever as slaves

B.start to make changes for the future

C.want to unite the north and the south

D.work hard and are respected by their owners
