四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   One of the most often asked and most controversially (有争议的) answered question is “What should I do when I meet a blind person?” A quick Google search will turn up plenty of answers, which are quite different from each other. So, obviously, there is no general agreement on what to do when you meet a blind person.

There are no special rules or dos and don’ts that can deal with this situation. There is only one principle (原则): Blind people are nothing more or less than people who happen to be blind. As such, it is our own job to take care of ourselves, and we are grateful to no one else for special care or leadership.

The best thing to do is nothing. Don’t suppose you know what we need. If we do need something, we’ll politely let you know.

Forget everything you’ve heard about the blind even if you consider yourself to be an expert. Blind people have plenty to say about “experts”. Especially, forget anything you’ve heard or read about “Ten Things to Do if You Meet a Blind Person”. The advice will probably just cause more embarrassment (尴尬). More of it is made up by sighted people anyway and doesn’t necessarily stand for the blind’s view.

There is completely no way to second-guess the situation by imposing (强加) any preformed ideas. Even if you’ve known other blind people, don’t think you know what to do with every one of them. The thing that often makes us angry is to hear “It’s OK. My mother (sister, cousin, friend) is blind.”

Blind people are as different from each other as any two people on this earth. There are no similarities among us that you can depend on. Even the degree of vision, hearing or touch that we use can be very different. Most blind people do have the same degree of vision, and even the very few of us who are totally blind may use our touch and hearing very effectively.

【1】It can be inferred from the passage that the writer ________.

    A.is a blind person

    B.hears more clearly than others

    C.never asks others for help

D.thinks blind people need special care

【2】According to the passage, which of the following opinions may the writer disagree with?

A.Most blind people can take care of themselves.

B.Blind people aren’t equal to sighted people.

C.Blind people generally dislike those thinking they understand the blind a lot.

D.Each person, blind or sighted, is different from anyone else.

【3】Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

    A.Never Help the Blind

    B.Try to Help the Blind

C.Not Every Help Is Good for the Blind

    D.Learn More about the Blind

  • 25、A local store is remodeling (改造), but not one of the changes is good for those of us who shop there. The passages (通道) have been changed with some going in one direction and others going in another. The passages have been pushed closer together, making it harder to get through them. All of the goods have been moved from their usual places as well.

It seems that all of these changes have been for the purpose of slowing the shoppers down so they will spend more time shopping and make more buys.

As I walked through the store today, no one was smiling and everyone was unhappy about it. The change that mostly let me down, however, was in the check-out passages. Only a few cashiers (收银员) were left working with most sections being changed into self-service check-outs. It saddened me to see this. I knew that people were probably going to lose their jobs because of this change.

I got in a cashier passage and patiently waited when I saw some other people trying to learn how the self-service machines worked. At that moment I decided not to use one even though I had to wait longer every time I shopped there.

When I finally arrived at the front of the passage, I saw the cashier was someone I knew.

I asked her how her family was doing. She answered me with a warm and kind smile that deeply touched me. We talked happily when she bagged up my goods. I felt a friendship and connection with her that warmed my heart.

Machines can do a lot for us, but there are many things they can’t do. They can’t smile. They can’t love. They can’t touch a heart. Only we can do that. Only we can make life worth living. So it is time for us to realize that money isn’t more important than people, and machines aren’t more important than us. It is time for us to go out and communicate with others as much as possible.

【1】How have the passages of the store been changed?

    A.They have become longer.

    B.They have become narrower.

C.They have been built in a modern style.

D.They have been built in the same direction.

【2】What makes the writer the saddest?

    A.The passages have been improved.

B.It’s difficult to get through the passages.

C.The goods have been changed their places.

D.Most cashiers have been displaced by self-service machines.

【3】Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.The writer spent most of his time shopping.

B.The writer waited for a long time to check out.

C.The cashier will not work for the store in the future.

D.Many people used the self-service machines happily.

【4】Why did the writer get in a cashier passage?

A.Because he didn’t want to use the self-service machines.

B.Because he would never shop there.

C.Because he had a lot of time.

D.Because the cashier gave him a warm and kind smile.

【5】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A.People can live without machines.

B.The world will be better with machines.

C.Money is the most important thing for us.

D.we should have more contact with each other in the world.

  • 27、Mark’s brother, Jamie, rang Mrs. Grady’s doorbell. “You know her better than I do, Mark. You do the talking.”

“Hi, Mrs. Grady,” said Mark when their neighbour opened her door. “Would you like us to shovel(铲雪)your sidewalk and driveway?”

Shoveling was Jamie’s idea, a way to make enough money for the new Ocean Kingdom video game that came out the next day.

Mrs. Grady touched her hand to her heart. “That would be wonderful, boys. I think the job is getting to be too much for me.”

“It will cost 10 dollars,” Jamie said.

    “If that’s OK,” Mark added.

“Oh dear,” Mrs. Grady sounded disappointed (失望的). “I haven’t been able to get to the bank. I can offer homemade cookies, but I realize that’s not what you had in mind.”

Mark was going to say that Mrs. Grady could pay them another time, but Jamie cut him off. “We’ll come back later.”

As they walked back, Mark looked quickly over his shoulder. Mrs. Grady stood at her window, watching them.

She didn’t look like the person who came to make him safe last summer when Mr. Dunn’s collie(牧羊犬), Goldie, get away from her backyard. Goldie had just wanted to play, but Mark didn’t feel comfortable around big dogs. And Goldie had boxed him in between the wooden fence(栅栏)and the cedar hedge (雪松树篱).

Mark had tried to call for his dad, but his tongue (舌头) seemed locked behind his teeth.

Then Mrs. Grady’s front door had flown open. “Hold on, Mark. I’m coming!” She picked up a broom. “Goldie!” She’d called. As soon as Goldie had turned her head, Mrs. Grady had appeared quickly between Mark and the dog.

“Goldie, go home!” Then she’d swept her broom to hurry the dog along.

When Mark’s father had appeared, he’d said to Mrs. Grady, “That was very brave! Thank you.”

Mrs. Grady had laughed. “It was nothing. Good neighbours watch out for each other, don’t they?”

And now Mrs. Grady needed Mark as much as he’d needed her last summer.

He smiled and then dug deep into the snow.

“Hey!” Jamie shouted. “What are you doing?”

Mark couldn’t explain about Goldie and watching out for neighbours. “I like Mrs. Grady’s cookies,” he said and continued.

“It’ll take you all day,” his brother complained. “We’ll never get that game.”

Mark kept digging. Surprisingly, Jamie joined in.

Mark smiled. Jamie had known all along it was the right thing to do.

“Once the other neighbours see the good job we’ve done, they’ll line up to hire us,” said Jamie. “We’ll make money soon enough.” As usual, he had it all worked out.
