Yes, but only up to a point. You may join many clubs and take part in different kinds of activities to make sure that your college application will stand out. But don’t stress yourself out. You shouldn’t have over 5 after-school activities in your spare time. What’s more, the activities you choose should show what you really love or you have interest in. ---Amy |
Yes, take as many as you like. After-school activities make our life more colorful and make us happier in our daily life. They also help us make many more good friends. In addition, we can learn much from these activities. ---Rose |

25、Tea bag drinking is most Westerners’ favourite way of drinking tea. Do you know how it came about?
The tea bag was invented in 1980 by Thomas Sullivan, an American tea seller. He was sending out free tea in silk bags for people to try. People put the bags together with the tea leaves into the cup and added hot water. The tea tasted good, and people thought it was easy to clean the cup. They were not happy when Sullivan started sending them loose (散的) tea again.
Sullivan realized that he had a hot new thing in his hands, and he built a machine to pack the bags. As tea bags became popular, they were changed from silk to gauze (薄纱) and later paper. In 1952, Lipton Tea made the tea bag even more popular with its invention of the four-sided tea bag. Tea bags were soon a hit in the UK. And today 85% of the tea in the UK is packed in paper bags.
However, many people still prefer loose-leaf tea. This is because some tea companies put not very good tea in their tea bags. But for most drinkers, tea bags are still the easy, tasty way to go.

26、What should you take in with you when you take an exam? Pen, pencil, eraser, ruler..., and don’t forget a bottle of water!
According to a study at the British Psychological (心理学的) Society Annual Conference held in London, if students bring water into exams, they may improve their grades by up to 10 percent.
Scientists at the University of East London and the University of Westminster, UK, did a study on 447 students. Only 25 percent of them brought something to drink to the exam hall.
Scientists then compared their exam results with their normal schoolwork grades. They found that all those who had brought drinks with them got better grades by 2 to 10 percent.
It is unclear why drinking water improves exam results. But scientists say having enough water in our bodies could have a helpful influence on our brains. Drinking water may also cut down on anxiety(焦虑) , according to Chris Pawson, PhD, of the University of East London.
"Whatever the explanation, it is clear that students should try hard to stay hydrated(含水的)with water during exams," he said.
So next time, when you are going to have a big exam, try bringing a bottle of water with you. Who knows - it may help you pass the exam!

27、 Besides the spelling of the word, there are clearly many differences between American and British humor.
There is a common belief (信念) in the UK that Americans don’t understand irony (讽刺). This is of course not true. But what is true is that Americans don’t use it all the time. Irony may show up in American comedies, but people there don’t use it as much as the British do in daily life. However, irony is common in British culture. It actually runs in the blood of the British people. They use it as a way of playing with their friends and laughing at their enemies as well as themselves in everyday conversations. This may sometimes make people unhappy if the listeners are not used to it. They may also feel embarrassed.
Things are different in America. After American people use irony, they feel the need to make a joke clearer so that it will not make other people uncomfortable. Humor is tied so much to culture. American jokes are clearer and more forward. British jokes, on the other hand, are more subtle and usually with a hidden meaning. This may result from the fact that British culture is more reserved (矜持的)than American culture. However, we still find that certain American comedies have made huge success in Britain.
Therefore, although there are differences between both comic styles, there is still an appreciation (欣赏)and understanding of the other’s sense of humor.
