  • 27、I left my hometown in London last year and now I have enjoyed working in this small city in China. Learning a foreign language opens your eyes to the culture and history of a country. So in order to know more about China, I started to learn Chinese.

But at times, I found myself in funny situations. When I greeted strangers in China, they began to talk a lot and very fast. They asked me questions about everything. But all I could do was to look at them with a blank face. I had no idea what they were talking about. Were they just being kind, funny or impolite? Many people want to make friends with me. But I am a bit upset when I find out the reason why they need a foreign friend. They say they want to practice their English. I don’t need friends like this. I like friends to share my feelings and ideas with.

However, the more Chinese I learn, the more similarities I find it has with English. In English, “thickskinned” is to describe a person who doesn’t care about criticism (批评). I was surprised to find that “houlianpi” in Chinese means the same. And both languages share some common idioms (习语). For example, “look on with folded arms” means “xiushoupangguan”, and “burn the boats” is similar to “pofuchenzhou”.

I’m still on my journey to Chinese learning. I believe that sometimes you have the most fun on a journey.

【1】The writer came to China in order to ________.

    A.learn Chinese

    B.study culture

    C.work

【2】The underlined word “blank” means “________” in Chinese.

    B.空白的

    C.不理解的

【3】Many Chinese want to make friends with the writer because ________.

A.they want to help the foreigner with his Chinese

B.they want a partner to practice English with

C.they want to share feelings and ideas with him

【4】If there would be a paragraph before the last paragraph of the passage, it most probably would be about ________.

A.the reasons why he wants to learn Chinese

B.the differences between Chinese and English

C.the importance of learning Chinese and English

The Girl No One Talked to

Last year there was a girl at our school who hardly anyone talked to. I think it was because she seldom showered, and she kind of smelled bad. Her name was Cindy Lindburg. I didn’t know exactly where she ______, but it must have been somewhere in the neighborhood because we always got on the school bus at the same bus stop.

As soon as I got close enough, I glared (怒视) at Carl to make him ______ laughing. But it didn’t work. So I walked over and stood closer to Cindy to make sure she wouldn’t feel quite so bad. It was just one of those times when you just knew someone needed someone to be a friend.

Some of the kids around us laughed after they heard what I had said. By now everyone there was talking with a friend. Quietly, and with a serious look on her face, Cindy said, “I don’t know why everyone ______ me.”

I was surprised at her words. “No one hates you,” I told her.

Turning back to face me, Cindy took a deep breath and said, “Thank you.” I was so relieved, and the next moment the bus arrived, and all the kids started getting on.

“If I save a seat for you on the bus tomorrow,” she asked, “will you sit with me?”
