四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Uncle Tom lived in a small log cabin near his master’s house with his wife, Aunt Chloe, and their children. One day, Aunt Chloe was baking a cake on the fire. Two young boys, Mose and Pete, were playing with their baby sister, Polly. Uncle Tom was sitting at the table. He was a large strong man with a kind face and an air of dignity(尊严). He was very busy. He was trying to write the alphabet on a small blackboard. Mr Shelby’s son, young Master George, was teaching him. However, while this was happening in Tom’s cabin, something very different was happening in his master’s house.

When they were getting ready to go to bed. Eliza, a young slave from the house, came to their door.

“Uncle Tom and Aunt Chloe”, she said, “Master sold Uncle Tom!’

“Sold Tom?” said Aunt Chloe. “But why did he do that?”

“Master is in debt, he has to find the money, or he will have to sell the farm and all of us and leave. So he sold Uncle Tom to pay off his debt.”

“Tom, why don’t you run away? The trader will sell you to a plantation, where they kill slaves with hard work and no food! There’s still time. Come on, get up, and I’ll get your things ready.”

Tom looked at her with sad eyes and said “No, I’m not running away. You heard what Eliza said! Master needs money to keep the farm and the people. I’m strong. I’ll be OK. I can go so he won’t have to sell everything. These things happen, Chloe, and Master tried to be good. He’ll take care of you and the children.”

Then he looked at his sleeping children and he covered his face and started to cry.

【1】How many children did Tom have?

    A.One.

    B.Two.

    C.Three.

    D.Four.

【2】How did Tom feel when he heard the news that he was sold?

    A.Surprised.

    B.Angry.

    C.Afraid.

    D.Sad.

【3】Why did Mr Shelby want to sell Tom?

A.Because all the other slaves didn’t like Tom.

B.Because Tom was so lazy that he could do nothing.

C.Because Mr Shelby was in debt and he needed money.

D.Because Tom asked Mr Shelby’s son to teach him the alphabet.

【4】Which of the following best described Tom?

    A.Loyal.

    B.Modest.

    C.Strict.

    D.Curious.

  • 25、   Which hand do you use to write your name? Which foot do you use to kick a ball? You probably use the same hand or foot. That’s called your dominant side.

About 90 percent of humans are right-handed. Scientists want to know if other animals also have dominant sides. So they give simple challenges to zoo animals and pets.

At first, chimpanzee (大猩猩) appeared to be left-handed. Dr. Hopkins watched chimpanzees as they went “ants fishing”, using sticks to pull ants out. Most of the chimps did the job with their left hand. However, when chimpanzees ate butter from a narrow pipe, they tended to use the left hand to do the easy part (hold the pipe) and a finger on the right hand to do the hard part (reach in for the treat).

Does that mean chimpanzees are left-handed for some tasks and right-handed for others? That’s not likely. Dr. Hopkins says the chimps may have used the weaker hand to pull out the ants and the dominant hand to hit the insects and put them in mouths.

But how about other animals? Dr. Wells wondered if cats are right-or left-pawed. At the beginning, he gave the cats the simple task of moving across the floor. The cats showed no preference; they used either paw. Dr. Wells also made the cats perform given movements. The researcher dropped a small fish into a can and wrote down which paw each cat used to fish out the treat. All of the female cats except one used the right paw. For males, 19 out of 21 used the left paw. Dr. Wells tested each cat many times to make sure it really preferred to use one paw instead of the other.

【1】In Paragraph 1, the word “dominant” can be replaced by ________.

    A.gentle

    B.powerful

    C.opposite

    D.unique

【2】What can we learn from Dr. Hopkins’ research?

A.Chimpanzees use right hands for tough tasks.

    B.About 10 percent humans are left-handed.

C.Chimpanzees get the treat with the weaker hands.

D.Left hands are more important in getting the butter out

【3】Dr. Wells probably agreed that ________.

A.moving across the floor was a challenging task for cats

B.various foods were necessary to carry out a scientific study

C.cats used different paws each time in the repeated tests

D.male and female cats had the opposite choice to get the fish

【4】As to “if other animals also have dominant sides”, the two scientists ________.

A.saw eye to eye with each other

B.discovered it was not a simple yes or no

C.raised different animals to seek the truth

    D.worked together to perform experiments

  • 26、Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)

Suppose you are 17 and live alone with no money. Years ago, that was my dad. His father died when he was 10, and as the oldest of five, he had to take care of his brothers and sisters. When his mother remarried, my dad had to leave home. With few choices, he joined the army, and worked as hard as he could for a job, a nice house, and a family. Having a dad like him has made me different from other people; with his help and advice, I set and meet my goals.

When I wanted to play basketball, my dad said, “Don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do.” People thought I was too small to play, but he let me know I could. Looking back now, I know why my dad said this to me: it was something his father and mother never told him.

Time flew by. It was time for me to look for a job. A department store offered me a job as cart assistant. For the whole day, I pushed shopping carts. It was so cold that I couldn’t move my hands. But my dad wouldn’t let me give up, even though I wanted to. He kept saying it would get better, and he was right. I’ve worked there for a year now and I do much more than just push carts.

My dad helped me grow into the person I’m becoming. When I was younger, I was small. The other boys called me “____Nicky”. I hated it. I went to my dad for a help. He encouraged me and helped me make an exercise plan and I got to work.

In my life, there are different roads. My dad helped me get on the one I continue on today. I know I am just at the beginning. There will be difficulties. But there will always be my dad. Even when he is not physically here for me, his words won’t leave my mind.

1At the age of ________, my father had to care for his brothers and sisters.

    A. 5   B. 10   C. 15   D. 17

Minoru Yamasaki was a well-known American architect (建筑师). He was born in 1912 in Seattle, Washington. His parents came from Japan. Minoru went to college to study architecture. Every summer he worked in a fish factory to help pay for college. Often he worked from four o'clock in the morning until midnight. He slept in a room with 100 other men. Later in life, Yamasaki remembered these times and was always good to his workers.

Yamasaki sometimes dreamed about his work. Once he woke up at three o’clock in the morning. He remembered a building that was in his dream. He got up and started to draw. Yamasaki used a new design(设计) for the buildings. These buildings are now the Century Plaza Hotel, and Tower in Los Angeles, California.

Yamasaki was different from other architects. His buildings give people a feeling of peace(和平) and happiness. Many of his designs have pools of water, flowers, and windows on the roof to let in light. He always designed buildings to please people. He wanted to give them a place away from the busy ways of modern life.

Yamasaki worked for several companies. But his success began when he started his own company. In 1956, he won the Architect’s First Honor Award for his design of an airport in St. Louis, Missouri. He won two more awards (奖)over the next five years. In 1962, he designed the World Trade Center in New York. It is very famous.

In 1993, a bomb exploded (炸弹爆炸) in the World Trade Center. But the buildings did not fall down because they had a good design.

Yamasaki had strong opinions about his buildings. They had to be built his way. He refused to change the design of his buildings, even if he lost a job.

Minoru Yamasaki died in 1986. He designed more than 300 buildings. People will enjoy the design and beauty of his buildings for a very long time.
