  • 24、More and more people are becoming worried about the environment. But what can common people do about problems like pollution? 【1】 However, we can do some simple things to help the environment.

Many of us use our cars much more than we need to. 【2】 Then we complain that we don’t get enough exercise! Leave the car behind when you need to go to the shops. That can help cut air pollution.

【3】 In fact, there are lots of beautiful places closer to home. If we visit places near our home instead of traveling a long way to lie on a beach, we’ll cause less pollution!

Planes cause a lot of pollution, too. Before you go on a trip by air, ask yourself if it’s really necessary. 【4】 That’s a much cleaner way of traveling.

Where we go shopping also affects the environment. In the past, there were lots of small, local shops. 【5】 Whether we drive or go by bus, it causes pollution. Buy things from places closer to home when you can. Then more and more local shops may appear and there will be less need to travel far to shop.

  • 25、Early in early times, people could realize the importance of dreams and knew that dreams gave meaning to life. Every great achievement has been the result of years of dreaming. If a person has a dream and holds fast to it, he or she will find a way to bring it into reality (现实).

Children do not have much experience or knowledge. However, they are natural dreamers. We should not laugh at them for being naive. With their rich imagination, they will come up with fantastic dreams. History is full of examples. Many great men were dreamers when they were children. One such dreamer was Thomas Edison. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are the good examples. They have developed technology and brought great progress to humans besides making money for themselves.

Older people should believe that it is never too late to dream and that human mind is never too old to make dreams turn into reality. Colonel Saunders realized his dreams at the age of 67 and setup the biggest fried chicken company (KFC) in the world.

To dream is a wonderful ability which can lead to wonderful results. Olympic records were broken by players who were brave enough to dream. No one is too young or too old to dream and come true.

1People who_______ could probably realize their dreams.

    C. get the meaning of life   D. have very good school results

2Young people should be encouraged to dream because

    A. their dreams are natural   B. they are greater than everyone else

    C. they have much knowledge   D. their dreams might change the world

3What does the example of Colonel Saunders show us?

    A. Setting up a big company is a wonderful ability.

    D. People should be brave enough to dream when they are young.

    B. It is a little late for older people to dream.

    C. We should encourage young people to have dreams.

    D. Children are natural framers because they do not have much experience.

  • 26、   We all know that music has the power to comfort us when we are stressed out or upset. Can it do the same for animals? University of Leicester decided to test this by exposing(揭露) dairy cows to different music. They discovered that certain types of music helped cows produce 3% more milk than those that only heard the noises  of milking machines.

In the research, what they found was that similar to humans. Cows have different tastes. Some prefer soulful music while others have a penchant for classical music. Based on their findings, they made two play-lists that they believed would be welcomed by most dairy cows. One list includes some pop songs like REM's Everybody Hurt, Aretha Franklin's version of What a Difference a Day Makes and Simon’s Bridge Over Troubled Water. The other list includes classical hits like Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony and Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp in D Major.

Besides, music is not the only thing that dairy cows enjoy. A few years ago, actors in Kent, England decided to see if the animals liked Shakespeare by performing one of his plays to the local cows. Sure enough, their milk output increased.

So the next time you visit a dairy farm, don't be surprised to see the cows listening to their favorite music. After all, “Great milk comes from happy cows!”

1The research find that music not only has influence on humans but also the animals.

2The writer provides us with two things that can help the cow have more milk, including some certain music and the play.

3According to the passage, all the cows are interested in the same music-soulful music.

4Bridge Over Troubled Water belongs to the classical music in the first list.

5The main idea of passage is to tell us how the cows produce milk.

Gina was surprised to find that it was not raining in London. She stepped down from the train that had brought her from Dover to Victoria Station and put her heavy suitcase on the platform(站台). People were hurrying everywhere: through the entrances and exits, up and down the steps, along the other platforms and over to the ticket counters(柜台)where there were already queues forming. The porters(行李员)seemed to be busy helping other passengers. In Milan everyone told her that it was always raining in England. Today, however, they were wrong. It was warm and dusty just like at home. She could even hear someone speaking her native language somewhere near the station bookstore. She walked slowly towards the gate at the end of the platform where a railway official was collecting the tickets. She handed him her tickets and walked through. She looked up the station clock. Its hands were pointing to 3:15 p.m.

A young woman was sitting on a bench reading an English magazine. She looked friendly so Gina went up to her.

“Excuse me.” she said. The young woman looked up with a smile. “Can you tell me the way to circus?”

“The circus?” The young woman looked puzzled. “What circus do you mean?”

Gina shook her head. “I’m sorry. I have just arrived from Italy to attend a school for foreign students in London. It is near the circus.”

“Do you have a letter with the school’s address on it?”

“Oh, yes. Now I remember.” Gina opened her handbag and found a postcard with a British stamp on it. “Ah,” said the young woman. “It’s Oxford Circus that you want. It’s the name of an area in the middle of London. You must go down these steps and take the underground. Follow the colors. That’s the easiest way. “She showed Gina on the colored map of the underground railway the route from Victoria to Oxford Circus. “Good luck,” she said. “And by the way, I come from Italy, too.”

1From the passage we know Gina was__________.
