  • 25、Even today, the British novelist Charles Dickens is loved by readers all over the world. Dickens created some unforgettable characters. You must have heard of or even read some of his novels: Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities. A Tale of Two Cities has sold more than 200 million copies. Since 1897, there have been more than 300 films and TV adaptations (改编版) of Dickens’ works.

Natalie Mcknight is a literature (文学的) professor. She explains why the novelist is so popular. One important reason, she says, is that Dickens wrote from his heart. He tried hard to produce emotional (情感的) effects among his readers. In his works, he paid special attention to the “little man” at the bottom of society in the UK, which deeply showed the social reality at that time. A Christmas Carol, for example, was written to make every reader think about how they could make a difference to their society.

People always enjoy works that make them laugh, cry and think. Many other 19th century novelists wrote interesting works. However, few of them worked as hard as Dickens to touch the readers deeply.

Dickens wrote about situations and emotions that still interest people today. He used his pen to fight social inequality (不平等) and gave voice to the poor. His works led to many important social changes.

This year marks the 150th year of Dickens’ death. It’s another chance to remember this great writer. Will you read or re-read some of his famous works?

  • 27、Human activity is bringing big trouble to Mount Qomolangma. Both microplastics (微塑料)and climate change are polluting the mountain and causing its ice to melt, scientists say.

The highest mountain in the world is facing the problem of microplastics. A recent study found that the mountain is full of these plastics, which are usually less than 5 millimeters in size. They can be found in many things, including the clothing, tents and ropes that are left behind by climbers.

Microplastics take thousands of years to break down on their own. They are already known for posing a danger to sea animals. Now people are worried about Qomolangma, as the mountain already suffers from serious pollution.

Global warming is also affecting the mountain, as well as its climbers. Another study points out that the glaciers around Qomolangma have thinned by nearly 100 meters since the 1960s. As the ice melts, cracks in the ice are becoming deeper and more dangerous, bringing danger to those who try to climb the mountain, according to Global News.

Landslides (滑坡) are also becoming more probable. There are many parts of the mountain that are held together by just frozen rocks or permafrost (永久冻土), according to Professor Joseph Shea at the University of Northern British Columbia, Canada. When this permafrost melts, the risk of dangerous landslides goes up.

【1】What does the underlined word “posing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

【3】What do we know about the glaciers around Mount Qomolangma?

A.They are more dangerous than landsides.

B.They made landslides happen all the time.
