二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、There is a bit of confusion when it comes to whether eating while driving is allowed in Australia as it is kind of a legal gray area in most states. While there are no specific road rules that ban eating behind the wheel, drivers might as well not eat on the road to avoid being heavily fined.

    NEW SOUTH WALES

If the police catch you eating while driving in New South Wales, they can book you for driving without proper control of the vehicle. This comes with a $448 fine and three demerit points and that rises to a $561 fine and four demerit points if the offence is committed in a school zone.

    AUSTRALINA CAPITAL TERRITORY

Not pulling over to eat can also land you in hot water in the ACT. Much like NSW, drivers can be charged with driving without proper control of their car, which comes with a $292 fine. Drivers can also be given a $385 fine and three demerit points if their distraction results in a crash.

    VICTORIA

In Victoria, you could be forced to pay a $387 fine along with racking up three demerit points if the police catch you having a meal on the road.

    SOUTH AUSTRALIA

While the law in South Australia doesn’t specifically state that eating while driving is illegal, the SA Driver’s Handbook does name eating as a common distraction. Driving without having proper control of the vehicle could cost you $184 and six demerit points in South Australia.

    NORTHERN TERRITORY

If the police catch a driver eating on the road in the Northern Territory, they may charge him with “driving in a dangerous manner”. This means the driver could get a $500 fine and three demerit points.

【1】What does the underlined sentence suggest?

A.It is not an easy job to ban eating while driving in the state.

B.Eating behind the wheel can cause the driver lots of trouble.

C.It is important to educate drivers to be aware of driving safety.

D.It is common that many drivers in the state eat while driving.

【2】How much will a driver caught eating while driving in a school zone in NSW be fined?

    A.$385.

    B.$387.

    C.$448.

    D.$561.

【3】Where will a driver be fined most if caught eating behind the wheel?

    A.In the Northern Territory.

    B.In Victoria.

    C.In South Australia

    D.In the Australian Capital Territory.

  • 22、As teens grow older, it’s normal for them to spend more time with friends. It’s a normal part of teens’ development and a lot of socialization (社会化) is healthy. 【1】 If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to limit the amount of time your teen spends with friends.

Time with friends influences other responsibilities. If your teen ignores his responsibilities because he’s spending too much time with friends or chatting with them on social media, he needs help in managing his time. It shouldn’t get in the way of doing homework, finishing things, or taking care of other responsibilities. 【2】 Provide enough guidance until he’s better able to refuse invitations from friends.

【3】 Don’t stop your teen from having any contact with his friends. However, that is likely to cause bad results. Your teen may simply think he can’t hang out with his friends because you won’t let him — not because he recognizes they’re bad. Create rules that will help your teen make healthy choices. Make it clear that there will be results for misbehavior.

Your teen is breaking the rules. Spending time with friends is a special right. 【4】 Don’t give him unlimited access (接触的机会) to his friends if he’s not earning that special right.

Your teen is hardly at home. 【5】 If your teen wants to spend the night at friends’ homes more often than usual, set some limits to make sure that he’s spending time with family.

It’s important for you to pay attention to your teen’s activities. It’s also important that your teen is around so that he’s still being influenced by you and your family values.

A.But you should pay attention to it at once.

B.Your teen is hanging out with the wrong crowd.

C.He is also learning how to spend time with his friends.

D.But there are a few times when it can become unhealthy.

E.If your teen doesn’t follow the rules, take away that special right.

F.Time management is an important skill that will serve your teen.

G.While it is normal, friends shouldn’t take up all of your teen’s time.

  • 23、No history of Wushu in the West African state of Liberia would be complete without mentioning one man. He has devoted his life to Chinese martial arts. As a martial arts lover, Pewee Russian was determined to change his country's perception of Chinese martial arts, seen by many as a violent foreign culture.

Against all difficulties, Russian devoted his life to learning Wushu and by the late 1990s he was becoming an expert. At that time, fewer than five people in the entire country were taking an interest in Wushu, he says. As a boy, Russian lived with his foster parents, who attempted to distract him from martial arts. He found it "tiring and challenging,, to keep his mind on Wushu. They told him that learning martial arts was a dead end, but nevertheless he persisted.

When civil war began ravaging the country at the end of 1990, it proved a setback for his Wushu studies. When the war was over, after more than 15 years, Wushu was almost extinct. However, Russian still carried the passion in his heart.

“One of the things that really drew me closer to Chinese martial arts is the discipline, the culture - it makes your mind disciplined. I think Wushu is my calling," he says.

In 2010, the Chinese embassy in Monrovia awarded him a short-term study course at the Shaolin Temple. When he returned to his country in 2011, Russian led efforts to establish the Liberia National Wushu Association. He won an international medal on behalf of his country in 2016 at the Zhengzhou International Shaolin Wushu Festival. Since then, as a master, he has been inspiring others to share his enthusiasm. Russian is now the face of martial arts in Liberia.

However, Russian still regrets failing to attend the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He was the third best martial artist on the African continent that year but lack of finance kept him away from the games.

To make up for this lost opportunity, he is working diligently to train the next generation of champions, ensuring that he keeps the spirit of Wushu alive in the country.

【1】What do we know about Pewee Russian?

A.He got a medal in the Beijing Olympics.

B.He thought Wushu can help protect his country.

C.He is now his country's representative of Wushu.

D.He was the third best martial artist in his country.

【2】What difficulties did Pewee Russian face when learning Wushu?

A.His foster parents didn't support him.

    B.Wushu almost disappeared in Africa.

C.He lacked money for his Wushu studies.

D.His country started a war against another country.

【3】Which of the following best describes Pewee Russian?

    A.Crazy and reliable.

    B.Generous and hardworking.

    C.Persistent and considerate.

    D.Passionate and determined.

【4】What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

    A.To spread Chinese culture.

    B.To introduce a Wushu lover.

    C.To encourage Sino-African relations.

D.To promote values of martial arts.

  • 24、My mother was a mighty yeller. If there were such a thing as competitive yelling, without doubt, she’d be in the winner’s circle. And when she was mad, that particular type of yelling would often be peppered with strong language.

One afternoon in the spring of 1968 was exceptionally notable. One of my little friends playing at my house after school ran into our living room with a smile that showed her obvious delight. “Your mother just told ‘swear words’ to your father in his hat!” she said.

For a good part of my life, there was no escaping my mother’s yelling. She was a stay-at-home mom, literally. Over the course of many years, my mother suffered from agoraphobia, a fear of being in public places. Having five children over fourteen years, Mom developed a home-based lifestyle that became increasingly comfortable, to the point where she became fearful of leaving.

To ease the anxiety, Mom was often doped up (感到昏昏沉沉) on “nerve pills”, which kept her sleeping on the couch for most of the day. It seemed that she’d wake up for only two things: Jeopardy! and the weather forecast. Considering she never left the house, the enthusiasm for the weather seemed a bit peculiar. Perhaps she was only wondering: Will I need the heavy coat over me tomorrow or just a light cotton blanket?

I do stand-up comedy and often joke about my mother’s agoraphobia, on stage. I can joke only because Mom was able to overcome it. After many years of being a prisoner in her own home, she joined a support group for people with agoraphobia and other types of fears. Together they would practise everyday things that most of us would find quite unremarkable: walking through a mall, riding an elevator, driving over a bridge.

Her next step was to get a driver’s license and soon after, her own car. More accomplishments followed: She enrolled (注册) in a continuing education class, and then got a part-time job as a bookkeeper (her first job since she was a teenager). She and my father divorced and Mom began working full-time. Secure in her independence, she bought a house and, realizing that twenty years of Jeopardy! was not substitute for a formal education, enrolled in a class at the local community college.

At age fifty-eight, she was awarded an associate degree in accounting and at sixty-six, she went on her first business trip—to midtown Manhattan of all places. Imagine my mother walking through Times Square, when she was once afraid to step off the front porch!

In her early seventies, Mom remarried and moved from New York to Idaho. Her new husband Jim was sweet, kind, and as luck would have it, very hard of hearing. Mom was able to continue her yelling. They had a beautiful life together, covering many miles of travel. After Jim died last year, Mom moved to Florida to live with her two sisters. One is all but deaf and the other has a hearing aid, so now Mom can use her yelling for good purposes.

We now live on opposite sides of the country, but I travel to Florida when I can, and Mom, who’s eighty-two, visits me in Las Vegas. When she’s able to come to my stand-up shows, she laughs heartily as I perform the material she inspired. I do a bit about how my sister and I would run outside when we were in trouble: She’d be standing at the door yelling, “GET BACK IN THIS HOUSE!” and from the sidewalk we’d calmly reply, “Come on out and get us.” We weren’t stupid — to her, fresh air was like kryptonite.

I proudly point to Mom during the shows and tell the audience that if they’re lucky enough to still have their mother, they should treat her like the Queen Mother. Afterward people typically mill around, eager to chat with Mom and tell her what a good sport she is to be the butt of my jokes. I hear her voice, not yelling this time, but distinctly above the others. “That’s my daughter!” she says.

【1】The first two paragraphs indicate that _________.

A.Mom had an extraordinary speech way

C.Mom was somehow dissatisfied with life

    D.Mom was sometimes much embarrassed

【3】What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

    A.Old Yeller
