  • 21、The science of happiness

Everyone wants to be happy. Some argue that the main reason people do the things they do is to become happier. Others argue that happiness is a basic human right. 1 What really makes people happy?

     Measuring happiness

Social scientists usually count happiness simply by asking how happy people are. 2 Ed Diener, an expert on happiness from the University of Illinois, says that this is an effective way of getting information about people’s happiness.

     3

In one study, researchers asked people in different parts of a country “How satisfied are you with your life?” People in parts of the country with nicer weather said they were more satisfied with their lives. They said they lived better than people from a city with bad weather.

     Money and happiness

Researchers have examined the relationship between money and happiness for many years. They say that very poor people are less happy than rich people. 4 If you have a home, food and clothes, extra money doesn’t make you happier.

     What makes people happy?

According to researchers, there are three things that make people happy:

    1. Having close relationships with people — family and friends. 5

    2. Believing in something. This could be a spiritual (精神上的) view or a special philosophy (人生观) in life.

    3. Having goals that you find enjoyable and interesting. This means that your life has a purpose.

    A.Weather and happiness

    B.But what is happiness?

    C.Highly-paid jobs make people happy.

D.Most people are satisfied with their lives.

E.But lots of money doesn’t make you happier.

F.They ask people the question “How happy are you from 1 to 10?”

G.The closer and deeper the relationships are, the better for your happiness.

  • 22、As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.

Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping (录像) the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.”

The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings (兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”

【1】The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to _________.

    A. show the relationship between parents and children

    B. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table

    C. report on the findings of a study.

    D. give information about family problems

【2】 Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because _________.

    A. they are busy serving food to their children

    B. they are busy keeping order at the dinner table

    C. they have to pay more attention to younger children

    D. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family

【3】 By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children _________.

    A. have to help their parents to serve dinner

    B. get the least attention from the family

    C. are often kept away from the dinner table

    D. find it hard to keep up with other children

【4】 Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?

    A. It is important to have the right food for children.

    B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.

    C. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.

    D. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner

  • 23、The worsening air quality in tropical(热带的) cities is causing ever greater threats to people’s health and this trend will only get worse as the urbanization(城市化) is progressing quickly, scientists have warned. In a newly published study, a team of researchers explain that across all the 46 cities they surveyed from Africa to Asia, they have measured significant annual increases in pollutants harmful to health.

This trend is troubling as tropical cities usually lack proper air pollution monitoring measures and policies to deal with the problem. “These cities are predicted to reach populations of up to 80 million people by 2100, so actions targeting human-related pollution are badly needed,” the scientists stress.

Already the number of people dying prematurely(过早地) from long exposure to air pollution has been on the increase and people living in cities in South Asia are the worst affected. In Dhaka, Bangladesh, some 24, 000 people die of such causes each year while around 100, 000 people die in Indian cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore etc.

“The number of deaths in tropical cities in Africa is still lower due to recent improvements in health care there. But the worst effects of air pollution on health will likely occur in the coming decades,” the scientists say.

The reasons for worsening air quality in tropical cities lie in increasing road traffic, waste burning, and the widespread use of coal and wood. Industry is also partly to blame. “Open burning for land clearance in the past contributed most to air pollution in the tropics,” explains Karn Vohra, an author of the study. “Our analysis suggests we’re entering a new age when some cities experience rates of air pollution in a year that others experience in a decade,” Vohra warns.

【1】What is the function of the numbers mentioned in paragraph 3?

A.To show the negative effect of urbanization.

B.To warn people to limit their time of going out.

C.To remind people to pay attention to their health.

D.To display the seriousness of air pollution in some tropical cities.

【2】What helps the tropical cities in Africa maintain a lower death rate?

    A.The fast-paced urbanization.

    B.The improvements in health care.

C.The proper policies dealing with air pollution.

D.The effective air pollution monitoring measures.

【3】What does the underlined word “blame” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Take responsibility.

    B.Get affected.

    C.Break down.

    D.Check out.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.Air pollution is fast getting worse in tropical cities

B.The growing population is speeding up air pollution

C.Human activities lead to air pollution in tropical cities

D.It’s of great importance to increase the use of green energy

  • 24、   The preventive measures for forest fires include some preemptive(抢先)methods that can help reduce the risks of fires and control their severity and spread, and thus, maintain ecological balance and protect resources. Close monitoring of forest fires caused by natural factors can help prevent their spread to a large extent. To contain forest fires, fire departments usually use water and chemical fire retardants(抑制剂) that can be dropped from planes and helicopters. To control the spread of a wildfire, firefighters usually create a control line by removing all fuel from an area so that the fire cannot travel across it.

Controlled burns are often employed by government authorities to reduce fuel buildup, and clean up the fallen leaves, and thus, prevent the spread of forest fires to a vast area. Regular controlled burns can also help maintain biodiversity(生物多样性), as the smoke and heat produced in the process can facilitate(促进) the growth of seeds of certain plant species. Apart from these, responsible human behavior can help reduce the number of forest fires to a great extent. In fact, we can reduce the number of wildfires dramatically by not leaving behind any source of fire in the forest.

Forest fires can affect climate and weather to a great extent, besides causing severe damage to valuable trees. Wildfires can increase the level of greenhouse gases(water vapor, carbon dioxide, etc), and therefore increase pollution and global warming. However, they are also an important part of the ecosystem, and many plants depend on the heat and smoke generated by wildfires for their growth and reproduction. But large wildfires can cause extensive damage to the ecosystem, which again highlights the importance of effective control and prevention of forest fires.

A.burn the rubbish and keep the forest clean

B.help keep ecological balance of nature

C.reduce fuel building up and limit forest fires spread.

D.provide reasonable conditions for some plants’ growth.

4A controlled forest fire may play a positive role because ________________.

A.a new forest will appear soon.

B.it promotes the development of some seeds

  • 26、阅读下面短文, 根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Friends are special people who we share our lives with, and who share their lives with us in return. But seeking friends and keeping the friendship going are never easy. According to research recently published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, the key is to use “we-talk”.

The research reviewed and analyzed 30 different studies involving over 5,000 participants. This largest-ever analysis of “we-talk” suggested that the frequent use of “we” and “us” is linked to happier and healthier relationships. The word “we” moves people from an individual position into a partnership, which makes us more interdependent (相互依赖的). “The pronouns offer an insight into whether people see themselves as individuals or as part of a whole. Word use is a window into what people are thinking and feeling without asking them,” Megan Robbins told Science Daily. The research also found that “we-talk” is helpful for resolving conflicts. The primary point is that interdependence may bring about supportive and relationship-centered behaviors and positive acknowledge of the partner --- especially important in times of stress and conflict.

Contrary to “we-talk”, there is “I-talk”, which refers to the frequent use of first singular pronouns, such as “me”, and “mine”, when writing or speaking. Earlier this year, researchers from the University of Arizona, US, analyzed a set of data that came from 4,700 people in Germany and the US. They found that too much “I-talk” was an accurate verbal marker for the likelihood that someone is feeling stressed or experiencing negative emotions.

As you can see from the studies, too much “I-talk” can make you feel depressed. But “we-talk” can encourage you to become more positive and created a chain action of healthy interdependence with others. So next time you’re talking to a friend, try using more “we-talk”. You may find yourself feeling more positive --- and the effect it will have on your friend will be positive as well.
