    Depressed? Do What You Love

About 350 million people around the world suffer from depression. Therapists can use many different techniques to help, but none has more accurate scientific evidence behind it than cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This “inside-out” technique focuses mainly on thought patterns, training patients to recognize and reframe their thinking.【1】

BA is an outside-in technique in which therapists focus on adjusting actions rather than thoughts. “The idea is that what you do and how you feel are linked,” says David Richards, a health services researcher at the University of Exeter in England. If a patient values nature and family, for example, a therapist may encourage him to schedule a daily walk in the park with his family members.【2】This could create an alternative to more negative pastimes such as thinking on loss. BA has existed for decades, yet until now it has never been tested with the scale and exactness needed to assess its relative strength as a stand-alone approach.

In one of the largest studies of its kind, Richards led a group of 18 researchers working at three mental health centers in the U.K. who put BA and CBT head-to-head. They assigned 440 people with depression to about 16 weeks of one of the two approaches, then followed the patients’ progress at six, twelve and eighteen months after treatment began.【3】A year on, about two thirds of the patients in both groups reported at least a 50 percent reduction in their symptoms.

【4】For instance, patients with depression could begin with simpler therapies such as BA, and then seek out more specialized care if they do not respond to that treatment. “We believe that BA is a good first step in treatment, and the report addresses that point,” says George Alexopoulos at Weill Cornell Medical College, a key member of the team.

In addition, Richards and his colleagues found that junior health workers could provide BA after a brief training period, which makes it significantly cheaper compared with CBT, for it requires highly specialized therapists.【5】

A.These findings could change treatment guidelines.

B.As shown in a report, the team found the treatments equally effective.

C.In doing so, it helps increase the rewards of engaging more with the outside world.

D.The disorder of depression is characterized by continuous sadness and also interference with day-to-day work.

E.Trained medical professionals should diagnose depression not only by a physical examination, but by asking the right questions.

F.This distinction could make the former a blessing to developing countries, where resources for mental health are especially in need.

G.Now, however, mental health professionals have another option: a technique called behavioral-activation (BA) therapy is just as effective.

  • 22、Less than three months after a gunman walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17 students and teachers, seniors on Saturday night will celebrate their prom.

Still, the Parkland high school prom will be far from ordinary. Not only will it be held under tight security, but there will be a tribute honoring the lives of the four seniors killed during the February 14 tragedy.

With some students still saddened and emotions running high, local businesses, vendors and community members have come together to offer products and services at cost or even free of charge, in hopes of relieving students of their burdens- even if just for a night. The event should involve all the hallmarks of a typical American prom: eye-grabbing decorations, lots of flowers and a dance floor packed with students dressed to the nines.

The biggest contribution came from the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, which has donated a ballroom and catering for the evening. The money saved allowed the prom planning committee to charge as little as $30 per ticket- down from the usual of about $100.

Other businesses also stepped up, offering hairstyling, makeup, photography and even prom dresses. To help ease students' pain, Gabriela Miller, an alumni and salon and spa owner, asked her staff to donate their time and services to girls preparing for the prom. They enthusiastically agreed. On Saturday, Miller and dozens of beauty experts from surrounding communities will do hair and makeup for more than 230 girls.

Apart from business, neighbors also did their part. Shawn Rosenthal, who lives a few miles south of Parkland, felt so moved by the attack that she organized a collection to provide free prom dresses to senior girls. Within days, with the help of her friends, they'd collected more than 100 prom dresses of all colors, shapes and sizes. They caught the eye of the Alumni Association, which was also gathering dresses, and pooled their efforts.

Such a community effort could help the students “heal for a moment.”

【1】What is the prom intended for?

A.The four seniors killed in the tragedy.

B.The surviving seniors in the high school.

C.The 13 victims except the Senior Grade 3.

D.All the 17 students killed in the violence.

【2】Why did the people offer products and services at cost or for free?

    A.To lessen the students' sorrow.

    B.To reduce the expenses.

    C.To enrich the celebrations.

    D.To prepare for the prom.

【3】What does the underlined word “pooled” probably mean?

    A.dug a pool for

    B.spared

    C.joined in

    D.swallowed

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Donations from Neighbors to the Prom

B.Efforts of the School to Help the Sad Students

C.Celebration of the Prom in a Parkland High School

D.Help for the Prom from the Community to Heal Students

  • 23、Honeybees can’t swim, and when their wings get wet, they can’t fly. But one study shows that honeybees do have another, less obvious choice to save them from death in the water: surfing.

The discovery began with a lucky accident. When research engineer Chris Roh passed by Caltech’s Millikan Pond, he saw a honeybee resting in the water, and since it was midday, the honeybee’s shadow (影子) fell directly on the bottom of the pond. However, what really caught his eye was the waves created by the honeybee’s wings, as the waves from one wing crashed with those from the other wing.

Roh brought honeybees to the lab, where he recreated the conditions, he saw at Mfillikan Pond. He placed a bee in a pan of still water and then shone filtered (过滤的) light from above to pretend it was the midday sun. He did this with 33 bees, but only for a few minutes one single bee at a time, and then gave each bee time to recover.

While water prevents a bee from flying by clinging (紧附) to its wings, the same condition obviously provides another way for the bee to escape. The bee pulls water with its wings, creating waves that can push it forward.

But there are some limitations. Obviously, the bees can’t produce enough force to get them out of the water. However, the wave can push them forward enough to the edge of the water, where they can then climb out and fly away. This behavior is more tiring than flying, and Roh guesses the bees can only hold it for about 10 minutes before using up their strength, so the chances to get out may, be limited.

“This behavior has never been recorded in other insects,” Roh added. This study focused on honeybees, but future studies could investigate whether it is also used by other bee groups or possibly even by other winged insects.

【1】According to the new study, what helps honeybees avoid death in water?

    A.The crash between their wings.

B.The water clinging to their bodies.

C.The strong will to get out of water.

D.The waves produced by their wings.

【2】Why was filtered light used in the lab probably?

A.To help the honeybees recover quickly.

B.To make the honeybees gain more force.

C.To keep the honeybees in warm conditions.

D.To create a shadow on the bottom of the pan.

【3】How are the limitations of the honeybees’ way presented in paragraph 5?

    A.By using examples.

    B.By giving explanations.

    C.By making a comparison.

    D.By listing specific numbers.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.No insects can surf other than honeybees.

B.More methods will be used to study insects.

C.Researches will be done into other bee species.

D.Bees made more and more scientists concerned.

  • 24、There was something about me that most people considered “different”. I was not comfortable hugging friends, but I did love listening to discussions about politics. I was very talkative and curious, which seemed to wear out the patience of my friends and sometimes even the adults around me. I stuck out from my classmates, but I was learning to be less remarkable. It wasn’t until decades later that I learned my uniqueness has a name: autism (自闭症). My diagnosis (诊断) at 46 was like discovering a missing piece of my brain, picking it up, putting it in place, and feeling whole for the first time. What I’ve found out since is that there are a significant number of others like me—individuals who weren’t identified as having autism until midlife.

In my 20s, I found work in a university fundraising program. I was good at my job. When I became a full-time master's degree student, I consulted a doctor about my growing anxiety. But autism never entered the conversation. In early 2017, I began a new job in which I was recognized as never before, and I didn’t know how to deal with it. As I neared the end of my one-year work, all the symptoms (症状) of my undiagnosed condition exposed themselves in my work environment: sensory overload and being confused by office politics. Then, two months later, I received my diagnosis. Finally everything started to make sense.

Today, I am an enterpriser. My new firm is called Liberty Co., to signify that facing the facts brings us freedom. Our goal is to increase the population of autism people in the work-place. It provides a chance for me to be a supporter for women with autism, including as a participant in research into autistic women’s experiences in the workplace.

Self-awareness is the greatest gift you can give yourself. Knowing my strengths as well as my limitations, both related and unrelated to my autism, has allowed me to build my self- esteem (自尊) and connect with others.

On a Sunday afternoon, Kiana French was having fun fishing with her father and younger sister, not knowing the next minute, they would struggle not to sink in the freezing water. Their 12-foot boat was taking in water little by little, and the wind was picking up. Her father, Gary French, hurried to operate the engine, while Kiana,16, was in the middle with Cierrah, her sister, frightened but still able to keep calm.

Kiana asked Cierrah to take off one of her cowboy boots, with which she got some of the water out. Hard as she tried, that little effort would not help stop the boat sinking. Moments later, the unthinkable happened. The boat was full of water and then it flipped over. Kiana and her sister were dumped in the water. Their father, who had had a surgery six months ago, managed not to be thrown into the water but seemed to have great pain in the chest due to the sudden change.

Kiana quickly put on her life jacket and saw Cierrah’s and her father’s life jackets floating away. She reacted quickly to get them back and held her sister onto the boat. They were so far out in the middle of the lake that they could not see the shore clearly. What’s worse.it was getting harder to stay above the waves. Their father swam over and hugged his two girls. Cierrah crying silently. Kiana heard her beloved sister murmur, “I can’t feel my feet.”

Kiana knew the only thing to do was to get to shore herself and find help. She looked up at her father, exchanging a concerned glance, turned round and swam as hard as she could towards the shore

Fighting against the strong currents and cold wind, she screamed for help at the top of her lungs every three minutes or so. A strong wind blew, and she looked back only to see her sister’s and father’s heads bobbing(浮动)in the water. She burst into tears, thinking her sister and dad were dead, because she was taking too long.
