二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、We now are in a “golden age” of space --- sample retrieval(取回)and exploration. Space agencies around the world are busy collecting, or planning to collect, samples from celestial bodies (天体). China’s Chang’e 5 mission is the most recent sample-return mission that has been successfully completed. On Dec 17, the Chang’e 5 lunar probe(探测器)returned home and landed in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region after weeks of space travel, China Daily reported. This was the world’s first lunar sample-return mission since 1976. The mission retrieved an incredible 1,713 grams of samples of rocks and dust.

Another space sample-return mission was completed on Dec 6. Japan’s Hayabusa 2 probe returned a capsule to Earth containing valuable samples from the asteroid(小行星) Ryugu. This was the second time asteroid samples have ever been collected and brought back to Earth. The first asteroid samples were collected by the original Hayabusa spacecraft back in 2010.

There will be more such missions in the near future. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, which collected samples from the asteroid Bennu in October, is expected to return to Earth in 2023. Russia’s Lunar-25 mission is scheduled to launch to the moon in 2021 to collect lunar samples.

“I cannot emphasize enough how valuable return samples are for increasing our understanding of the origin and evolution of our solar system and our place in the universe, and how we came to be,” said Ann Nguyen, a NASA planetary scientist.

Once the space samples are delivered to Earth, they are then analyzed with high-powered tools. These tools can help to reveal more detailed information than just photos or robotic rovers(机器人漫游车)alone. As for the Chang’e 5 lunar samples, scientists will conduct various analyses, tests and experiments to determine the composition(构成), structure and physical characteristics of the samples. This information will help to deepen our knowledge about the history of the moon, as well as our solar system as a whole.

We have only just begun to find out a small part of such celestial bodies. However, we have already learned so much and have a lot left to discover.

【1】What do we know about the Chang’e 5 lunar probe?

A.It was launched on Dec 17.

B.It brought back 1,713 grams of lunar samples.

C.It landed after days of space travel.

D.It was the world’s second lunar sample-return mission since 1976.

【2】Which of the following collected the first asteroid samples?

    A.Hayabusa.

    B.Hayabusa 2.

    C.OSIRIS-REx.

    D.Russia’s Lunar-25.

【3】Why are the returned samples valuable according to Ann Nguyen?

    A.Because they have water.

B.Because they show the structure of the solar system.

C.Because they will increase our understanding of the origin of life.

D.Because they show how water first appeared on the moon.

【4】What will scientists do with the samples?

    A.Discover their surfaces.

    B.Determine their sources.

    C.Compare them with space photos.

    D.Analyze them and conduct experiments.

  • 22、Whenever we see a button, we are eager to press it because we know something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example on a doorbell and on the “on/off” button on the TV. But some buttons are actually fake, like the “close” button on a lift.

Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts’ “close” buttons are a complete scam (骗局), at least in the US - the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.

It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.

But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.

“Perceived (能够感知的) control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,” Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor, said, “having a lack of control is associated with depression(沮丧).”

Experts have revealed that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats (温度调节器) because people tend to feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workplace.

Pedestrian(行人) crosswalk buttons don’t live up to their names either. Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computer-controlled traffic signals were introduced.

But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.

“That habit is here to stay,” John Kounios, a psychology professor, said. “Even though I have real doubts about the traffic light buttons, I always press them. After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not press the button in the hope that this one will work?”

1What was the author’s main purpose in writing the article?

    A. To describe some different kinds of fake buttons.

    B. To analyze the functions of fake buttons.

    C. To explore people’s different habits when it comes to pushing buttons.

    D. To explain the advantages and disadvantages of fake buttons.

2In America, the “close” buttons on lifts _______.

    A. work only when people press them hard for a while

    B. cannot speed up the process of closing the door in any case

    C. are fake for the convenience of disabled people

    D. were specially designed to give people a sense of control

3The underlined part “for this same purpose” in Paragraph 6 refers to _______.

    A. helping people to build up confidence

    B. making people more patient

    C. giving people perceived control

    D. making people with depression feel better

4According to John Kounios, people who press fake buttons ________.

    A. don’t know that what they press is fake

    B. should give up this habit

    C. consider what they do to be meaningless

    D. probably do so to kill time

  • 23、If your Internet or cable bill is more than you can afford or suddenly looks higher than you signed up for—you’re hardly alone. Many American Internet and cable TV companies employ a shell game of limited-time promotions and hidden, variable service fees to get us to pay more over time. 【1】 Here are some tricks I learned from Internet service providers and consumer advocates.

【2】 Check the website BroadbandNow to find all the available service providers specific to your Zip code. The site’s database is one of the best, though not all the options listed will necessarily offer speeds sufficient to keep a whole family online all at once. If you’re lucky enough to have options, you could even switch providers after promotional pricing runs out.【3】

Just threaten to drop service. Many Internet service providers would rather cut your rates to keep you as a customer than try to win you back later. Calling and threatening to quit isn’t fun for you or the person working in the customer-retention department, but it can work. Ask to have access to the latest promotional offer for your area. Don’t be mean:【4】

Buy your own modem and router. When you get Internet, you need two pieces of hardware to make it work: a modem and a router (sometimes combined into one box called a gateway). Most companies provide their own, and even set it up and then charge you to rent it from $10 to $25 per month. But you don’t have to rent their equipment—you can buy your own. In my house, I use a $150 Arris Surfboard modem plugged into a $130 Eero router for WiFi.【5】 It might even work better than what your provider is renting.

    A.Try to switch providers.

B.Sign up for the discount program.

C.Just remember to set a calendar reminder.

D.So what can you do now if your bill is just too high?

E.You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.

F.This approach will cost you more first but will save you in the long run.

G.You could try calling your city officials and tell them you need more options.

  • 24、It’s always easier to say “Yes” because most of us want to please other people. Somebody asks you to go for a party but you have tests the next day, or to help them although you are busy at the moment, or to join the activities you have to interest in at all! Even though your heart is crying NO, you find the word “Yes“ coming out of your mouth. However, it usually results in anger-not only for the person who asked you, but also for yourself for not being strong enough.

Lisa Messenger, the Collective Hub CEO, said in her first few years of business, many people asked her to talk over a coffee. Actually, she usually ended up having 20 coffee meetings a week and that stopped her from doing business because she didn’t have time to do her own work.

Messenger finally learned to refuse like “No, I’m sorry, but I don’t have time. ”. She believes if you say“Yes”, you will regret later. Or your heart will be filled with guilt, fear or anger because you feel bad for agreeing to do something you never want to. So you need to be brave enough to say “No”when you’re asked at first.

Janine Garner, CEO of The LBD Group, believed we need to get very clear about our goals. Unless we work towards our goals, nobody else will care about our time. Garner said, “We may end up saying “Yes’ because we feel sorry for somebody who needs us. But we end up having that awful feeling in our heart. You can only achieve the best of you by stopping doing the things that take up your time and don’t add anything towards your goals. Take a good look at the time spent on others, which you really should spend on yourself. ”

【1】How does the writer lead in the topic?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By telling a story.

    C.By making a survey.

    D.By asking questions.

【2】What can we learn about Messenger?

A.She always agrees to help her workmates.

B.She knows how to refuse others politely.

C.She likes drinking coffee in her work time.

D.She feels angry when she can’t help others.

【3】Which opinion would Janine Gamer probably agree with?

A.Offering help is the key to making friends.

B.Helping others may make you successful.

C.You’d better say “No” bravely if necessary.

D.People who need us will care about our time.

【4】What’s the structure of the passage?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.
