二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、【1】. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.

The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. 【2】.

The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second   level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. 【3】It included such items as automobiles and new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the "life-enriching" level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding. comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services. many of which could be called "luxury" items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. 【4】

On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice.【5】In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

    A.Then a third level appeared.

    B.Human wants seem endless.

C.When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears.

D.There are several levels of wants in one's life.

E.At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.

F.Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing

G.Different people have different wants on each level.

The connection we have to cats is so strong it feels almost as though they can read our thoughts, study our moods, and even judge how to behave based on our needs. But what really goes on in their sweet, furry heads?

Research suggests that cats don’t necessarily see us as any different from them. While cats understand that their human caretakers are larger than they are, they continue to behave around us in the same way as if they were around other cats. The only key difference is that cats meow to humans, not other cats.

Owners wondering about what the cats are thinking about should turn to cat body language. Since these are the ways your cat primarily communicates with you, studying their body language can help you understand then on a deeper level and you may start with tails:

We may think we have great insight into “cat thinking”, but we may never fully understand them. There exist lots of misunderstandings about cats, most notably:

*Cats try to be alien and prefer to be alone. No! They are actually social animals who hope for close relationship.

*Purring (making a low continuous sound) only means happiness…In fact, it can also suggest pressure, fear, or pain.   Keep an eye out for illness, and be prepared in the case of an unexpected accident.

*Cats scratch (抓) to anger people. Wrong again! Cats need to act out this to give themselves great pleasure and comfort.

A recent study concluded that cats, when given a choice between playing with certain toys or having interactive fun with a human being, decisively choose to play with a person. For us here at Cat Care of Vinings, it’s two-sided!

As always, please call us with any questions or concerns. Or, let us know what you believe cat thinking is all about!

  • 23、A woman in California is bringing back a 4.38-carat (克拉) yellow diamond discovered in the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, California. This is the largest diamond discovered in the park this year.

Noreen Wredberg and her husband Michael are traveling to American national parks. While in Hot Springs, Noreen noticed that she was near the Crater of Diamonds State Park, a place she had long wanted to visit.

Noreen and her husband started the day in the park looking for diamonds near the shaded area near the entrance to the mine, but Michael suggested they venture farther. Forty minutes later, Noreen was walking and found a shining jewel on the ground.

Noreen handed the stone to her husband, who took it to the park's Diamond Discovery Center to verify the identity. After examining the stone, park staff informed Michael that Noreen had found a large yellow diamond.

“When I first saw this diamond under a microscope, I thought, ‘Wow, what a beautiful shape and color!’” Park director Caleb Howell said. “Mrs. Wredberg's diamond weighs more than 4 carats, almost the size of a jelly bean, in the shape of a pear and the yellow color of lemonade.”

Park staff said the weather conditions were perfect for the Wredbergs because the rain can clear off dirt and it is easy to spot the diamond. Noreen was excited when the park staff gave her news about her discovery. Noreen named her find Lucy's Diamond, after her husband's kitten, and is not yet sure what she's going to do with it.

Crater of Diamonds State Park is the only diamond-producing site accessible to the public in the entire US. Over 33,100 diamonds have been found by the visitors since the Crater of Diamonds State Park became an Arkansas state park in 1972. • 24、Hadi Partovi, founder of Code.org believes every student should learn the basics of computer science just like they do math, physics,or biology, regardless of what they want to do in the future. The expert says knowledge about the subject is important to understand how the world around us works and compares it to learning about photosynthesis(光合作用),even though not every student is going to be a botanist. To spark students’interest,he created the“Hour of Code,”which introduces the world of computing to anyone, from ages 14 to 104,in a fun, interactive manner.Observed annually during Computer Science Week, the event now draws tens of millions of kids from over 180 countries.

The“Hour of Code”,which can be scheduled anytime during Computer Science Week, begins with an introductory video on computer science.Participants can then select from hundreds of fun assignments that are sorted by both grade level and coding experience.Though each project is designed to last just sixty minutes, beginners can deal with as many challenges as they desire.

To help introduce computer science in classrooms on a more regular basis,Code.org has also developed a catalog of online courses that can be incorporated(纳入)in a school’s regular curriculum.Since the nonprofit began offering the courses in 2013,over 704,000 teachers have signed up to teach introductory computer science to over 22 million students worldwide.

Thanks to the efforts of the pioneer, about 40 percent of US schools now offer computer science as a subject. The numbers are even higher—an impressive 70 percent—if after-school offerings such as robotics clubs are included.Even more encouraging, eight years ago, just 19,390 students took an Advanced Placement Computer Science exam.By the spring of 2017,the number had jumped 415 percent to 99,868.

C.its projects last sixty minutes each

D.its tasks can be sorted by coding experience

【3】What do we know about Code.org’s online courses?

A.Schools can use them regularly in their classrooms.

B.They help the developer make lots of money.

C.Over 704,000 teachers have been learning them.
