二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Never play games with a bot(robot)—it will find a way to cheat if it can. A team from OpenAI, an artificial intelligence lab in San Francisco, has developed artificially intelligent bots that taught themselves to cooperate by playing hide-and-seek. The bots also learned how to use basic tools to help them win.

Bowen Baker at Open AI and his colleagues wanted to see if the team-based dynamics of the OpenAI Five could be used to produce skills that could one day be useful to humans.

The researchers set their bots loose in a simulated(模拟的)environment filled with fixed walls, movable boxes and ladders, and left them to play team games of hide-and-seek. The bots each had their own view of the world and couldn't communicate with each other directly.

At first, the hiders simply ran away. But they soon worked out that the quickest way to stop the seekers was to find objects in the environment to hide themselves from view. The seekers learned that they could move boxes around and use them to climb over walls. The bots then discovered that being a team-player-passing objects to each other or cooperating on a hideout—was the quickest way to win.

But the real surprise came when the bots started making use of problems or faults. Seekers found that if they pushed a ladder towards a wall, they could launch themselves into the air and spot hiders from above. Hiders found that they could get rid of the ladders by pushing them aside.

It shows that AIs are able to find solutions that humans miss, says Baker. "Maybe they'll even be able to solve problems that humans don't yet know how to." However, it is a large leap(跳跃)from virtual hide and seek to real problem-solving. "The main limitation is that it is in simulation," says Chelsea Finn at Stanford University.

【1】Why did Bowen and his colleagues conduct the research?

A.To teach bots to play games.

B.To see the potential of robots

C.To find if bots may cheat like humans.

D.To train bots to use basic tools.

【2】What's the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.The design of the research.

    B.The tools of the research.

    C.The competitors of the game.

    D.The environment of the game.

【3】What does the underlined word "It" in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Passing objects.

    B.Moving boxes around.

    C.Hiding themselves from view.

    D.Making use of faults.

【4】What does Chelsea think of the finding of the research?

A.It can bridge a gap in the AI research.

B.It will not be influenced by the real world.

C.It may not be realized in the real world.

D.It will definitely help the real problem-solving.

  • 22、Teens who have good, supportive relationships with their teachers enjoy better health as adults, according to research published by an American research center.

“This research suggests that improving students’ relationships with teachers could have positive and long-lasting effects beyond just academic success,” said Jinho Kim, a professor at Korea University and author of the study. “It could also bring about health implications in the long run.” Previous research has suggested that teens’ social relationships might be linked to health outcomes in adulthood. However, it is not clear whether the link between teen relationships and

lifetime health is causal(因果的)-it could be that other factors, such as different family backgrounds, might contribute to both relationship problems in adolescence and to poor health in adulthood. Also, most research has focused on teens’ relationships with their peers(同龄人), rather than on their relationships with teachers.

To explore those questions further, Kim analyzed data on nearly 20, 000 participants from the Add Health study, a national study in the U. S. that followed participants from seventh grade into early adulthood. The participant pool included more than 3, 400 pairs of siblings(兄弟姐妹). As teens, participants answered questions, like “How often have you had trouble getting along with other students and your teachers?” As adults, participants were asked about their physical and mental health.

Kim found that participants who had reported better relationships with both their peers and teachers in middle and high school also reported better physical and mental health in their mid-20s. However, when he controlled for family background by looking at pairs of siblings together, only the link between good teacher relationships and adult health remained significant.

The results suggest teacher relationships are more important than previously realized and that schools should invest in training teachers on how to build warm and supportive relationships with their students. “This is not something that most teachers receive much training in,” Kim said, “but it should be.”

【1】What does the underlined word “implications” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Recipes.

    B.Habits.

    C.Risks.

    D.Benefits.

【2】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Poor health in adolescence.

    B.Teens’ relationships with their peers.

    C.Limitations of the previous research.

    D.Factors affecting health in adulthood.

    【3】What does Kim’s research show?

A.Positive student-teacher relationship helps students’ adult health.

B.Good family background promises long-term adult health.

C.Healthy peer relationships leads to students’ academic success.

D.Good adult health depends on teens’ good teachers.

【4】Where does this text probably come from?

    A.A medical report.

    B.A health magazine.

    C.A term paper.

    D.A family survey.

  • 23、   It is becoming increasingly important for researchers to closely monitor our ocean life. However, observing sea creatures up close is almost impossible since human presence scares them. Now, thanks to the The Soft Robotic Fish, also known as SoFi, researchers may be able to keep a close eye on the sea creatures.

Built by MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), the white remote-controlled robot resembles the real fish, complete with a tail that waves from side to side. Though not the first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) created to monitor the ocean, SoFi settles many of the problems that have blocked the usefulness of previous robot fish.

Previous AUVs have had to be linked to boats because of radio frequency communications don’t work well underwater. To overcome the problem, Director of the CSAIL Daniela Rus and her team used sound waves. The technology can travel greater distances allowing divers to pilot SoFi from up to 50 feet away.

Also limiting the usefulness of traditional AUVs is the risk of collision. With the outside made of soft silicone (硅树脂) rubber and flexible plastic that keeps its inbuilt electronics dry, SoFi poses no such danger. “Collision avoidance often leads to unnecessary movement, since the robot has to settle for a collision-free path,” says Rus. “ In contrast, a soft robot is not only more likely to survive a collision but also could use it as information to form a more workable movement plan next time around.”

During test dives, SoFi moved alongside the ocean life at depths of 50 feet for up to 40 minutes at a time, taking photos and making videos. The researchers say sometimes the fish would swim alongside the strange-looking robot-fish out of curiosity, while at other times they took no notice of its existence.

While SoFi presently only records video, future versions will include sensors. The researchers also hope to make it more autonomous. “We imagine someday it might help us uncovers more secrets from the amazing underwater world that we know so little about,” says Rus.

1What can we learn about SoFi?

    A. Its tail is flexible.   B. It is the first AUV.

    C. It is closely controlled.   D. Its presence scares sea animals.

2What can be learned from paragraph 3?

    A. Sound waves travel faster than radio.

    B. Radio does not work well underwater.

    C. Previous AUVs use radio to communicate.

    D. A boat travels along with SoFi on the water.

3How does SoFi differ from traditional AUVs?

    A. It is controlled above.

    B. It can avoid a collision.

    C. It can smartly adjust its movement plan.

    D. It is set for a collision-free path.

4Where is the passage possibly taken from?

    A. A news report.   B. A science fiction.

    C. A social website.   D. A short biography.

  • 24、   General Motors (GM) shared the first details of its third-generation electric vehicle (EV) and Ultium battery system just about a month ago, but it won’t be the only automaker using this new EV hardware. Honda(本田) is now planning to build two new electric models based on the GM tech.

Sharing of EV technology across automakers is becoming an increasingly common practice. Last summer, Ford reached an agreement to build at least one European battery electric vehicle (BEV) based on Volkswagen’s platform and more recently, Hyundai(现代) announced plans to use the electric platform from California-based startup Canoo.

This hardware sharing makes sense for automakers since the technology is expensive to develop but once it’s built into a vehicle, there won’t be much to distinguish(区分) one from another. Sharing allows the development cost to be spread over more vehicles, which is crucially important for a company to seize market share in the fierce competition.

While Honda has an excellent reputation for designing traditional engines, having even supplied some to GM in the past, it has struggled with BEVs. The Japanese automaker has focused more on fuel cell(电池) technology whose adoption is very limited at present. The only BEV that Honda currently offers in the U.S. market is the Clarity EV which offers just 89 miles of range on a charge. While Honda’s own BEV efforts don’t seem to have gained any progress, they have been working with GM on battery module design since 2018 and likely had a hand in the development of Ultium battery system.

The so-called “top-hats” which make up the body and inside of the vehicle will be designed and developed by Honda, however, the propulsion system and battery will come from GM. The first of the new Honda BEVs are scheduled to go on sale in 2024 and be produced at GM factories.

1Which automaker will probably use the new EV hardware besides GM?

    A.Ford. B.Honda. C.Volkswagen. D.Hyundai.

2What is becoming more and more common among automakers?

A.Using electric platform. B.Building electric models.

C.Sharing EV technology. D.Seizing car market share.

3Why is hardware sharing necessary to automakers?

    A.Because making vehicles is difficult.

    B.Because designing engines is important.

    C.Because distinguishing vehicles is necessary.

D.Because developing technology is very expensive.

4What can we infer from the passage?

A.Honda has defeated GM in developing BEVs.

B.Honda will be better than GM in developing BEVs.

C.Honda and GM will be partners in developing BEVs.

D.Honda will purchase GM factories to produce BEVs.
