21、 Qomolangma is the world’s highest mountain. You may have learned from your textbooks that its height is 8,844 meters. But not all sides are in agreement on this. Different researchers have given different results. In addition, the height of the mountain can change over time.
That’s why a 30-member Chinese survey team set out to reach the peak of Qomolangma to re-measure its height on May 6. They are equipped with the latest technology. It is not an easy task. The average air temperature on the mountain is-29℃-four degrees lower than in Antarctica-and powerful winds blow all the time. In such bad conditions, surveying drones (无人机) cannot work at the peak of the mountain. That’s why it’s still necessary to send human experts to the peak to get reliable results.
But does a difference of a few meters really matter when it comes to a high mountain?
In fact, measuring the height of Qomolangma is about more than just getting one exact number. Mount Qomolangma is at the point where the Eurasian plate (欧亚板块) meets the Indian plate. It formed 38 million years ago as the two plates hit each other. Changes in the peak’s height can show whether the two plates are heading toward or away from each other. This can help us understand the movement of Earth’s crust (地壳).
The survey team will also get firsthand information about environmental conditions at the top of the mountain. This will help us understand how climate change has affected the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau (青藏高原).

23、Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal, or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasise the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work,it is necessary to spend a lot of time in“small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries—like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realised that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a better chance to us to understand and learn from each other.
【1】What’s the benefit of eating together at restaurants in some countries according to this passage?
A.People can develop closer relations.
B.People can share the same culture.
C.People can get to know each other.
D.People can keep each other company.
【2】Why does the author mention his experience in Thailand?
A.To show the English prefer to make long speeches.
B.To show too many words are of no use.
C.To show people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature.
D.To show even talk and silence can be culturally different.
【3】According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?
A.By sharing different ways of life.
B.By accepting different habits.
C.By recognising different values.
D.By speaking each other’s languages.
【4】What would be the best title for the text?
A.Multicultural Environment
B.Cross-cultural Differences
C.How to Understand Each Other
D.How to Build up a Relationship
24、 Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
For example, some might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”
This guy's a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. In fact, he bought $200 worth of tickets. He's really a big loser!
He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just dishonest.
Some politicians often use this trick. During Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents says, “During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs!” That's true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false statements sol they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
【1】What do the underlined words “net gain” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Final increase.
B.Large share.
C.Big advantage.
D.Total saving.
【2】We may infer that the author believes people should ________ .
A.buy lottery tickets.
B.make use of half-truths.
C.not take anything at face value.
D.not trust the Yucky Company.
【3】What can we know from the example of the Yucky Pills advertisement?
A.Advertisements are based on facts.
B.Doctors like to act in advertisements.
C.False statements are easy to see through.
D.Half-truths are often used to mislead people.
【4】How is the passage mainly developed?
A.By listing examples.
B.By comparing.
C.By inferring.
D.By listing numbers.
