26、Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people worried about getting older. Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50—In fact, they say by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were 18 years old.
The findings came from a survey of more than 340,000 adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone. At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85. The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 24 and 25. The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.
The study also showed that men and women have similar feeling patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages have more sadness, stress and worry than men.
Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their feelings. So they spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be connected with changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry. The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness.

27、I loved to read stories of the successful people when I was young. What they did never failed to encourage me. And from them, I always find one thing—courage.
Personally, developing the power (力量) of courage also led to success in my life. People around me all know that I like singing and public speaking. Yet only a few know that when I was a little boy, I broke my vocal cords (声带) badly. I couldn’t pronounce words properly. Teachers told me not to develop my hobby in areas requiring the use of my voice.
But how could I give up? I worked hard to go on vocal training. And my voice slowly became better several years later. I could take part in all kinds of activities including musical matches and public speaking. And I got lots of achievements. My voice plays an important part in these activities. I’m also glad to say that most of my achievements have something to do with such activities. This is also why I have the chance to be one of the contestants (辩手) here today.
Courage has helped me overcome difficulties and led me on the road to achieve my dreams. So I hope all of you can believe in the power of it. The power of courage, unlike gift, is something that everyone can own. It is the key to unlocking new success in your life and the lives of everyone worldwide, one step at a time.
