25、Farming was considered part of the countryside charm (魅力) in the past. But now, farms have come to the city and they can even be found high up on balconies (阳台).
According to a recent report from Chinese online shopping platform Alibaba, the sales of vegetable seeds in the first quarter, from January to March, on Tmall doubled compared with the same period last year. Sales of products such as nutrient soil (营养土) and gardening tools have increased since April of last year. Out of all the people buying farming tools and seeds, most were born after 1995.
Zhang Chao, 17, from Anhui province, is one young “urban farmer”. The senior high student said his love for planting began in primary school when he lived with his grandpa in the countryside. “Spending his whole life as a farmer, my grandpa likes to plant seasonal vegetables in our backyard garden when he was older,” Zhang said. “Following his steps, I also learned to grow my own vegetables.” Though farming needs hard work, Zhang said he still had a sense of achievement when he saw seeds gradually turn into seedlings and later plants.
“It has brought me good memories,” added Zhang.
Although Zhang recently moved to a place without a yard, he continues his hobby with a balcony garden. He has bought strawberry and tomato seeds. “Growing fruits and vegetables not only brings delicious food and ensures food security, but it also reminds me of the happy times with my grandpa.” said Zhang.

26、In 2011, when British photographer David J. Slater was visiting a park in Indonesia, his camera was taken away by a group of black monkeys. The result was hundreds of monkey selfies (自拍照). The best ones show a female monkey smiling toothily for the camera. Slater then sold the photos and they became popular on the Internet.
Nobody knew they would create a copyright battle three years later.
Last month, Wikimedia Commons put the monkey selfies online under a collection of free photos without Slater’s permission. Slater asked the website to take them down since he owns the copyright.
However, Wikimedia Foundation—the organization behind Wikimedia Commons—refused Slater’s request. They said that according to US copyright law, whoever pushes the button on the camera owns the copyright to the photo. It was the monkeys but not Slater that pushed the button.
What’s more, monkeys don’t own copyright. “US copyright law says that works that come from a non-human source can’t ask for copyright,” said Katherine Maher, Chief Communications Officer of Wikimedia.
Slater argues that the pictures belong to him as they were taken from his camera. He said he bought the cameras; he spent a lot of money to travel to Indonesia; and it was his carelessness that allowed the monkeys to take his cameras away. All these have made him the author of the picture, no matter who pushed the button. In a sense, the monkeys could be regarded as his assistant, Slater said.
As of now, there has been no result in the Monkey Selfie case. Who do you think will win this interesting battle?
【1】 What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Some monkeys grabbed Slater’s camera.

A. A copyright battle over photos taken by monkeys.
B. Why Wikipedia refused to take down some photos.
C. How the photos taken by monkeys became popular online.
27、Community service means doing volunteer jobs for the public. It teaches valuable lessons about the duties of a citizen(公民). Today, in the United States, important services are provided through thousands of organizations created to meet needs not provided by government at the local, state, and national levels. These activities help to create a sense of great care for the public.
There are close connections between community service programs and civic(公民的) education in schools. At every level of school, students can be involved in community service projects. In the primary grades, one of the purposes for students is to learn basic civic values that include fair play, respect for the opinions of others, and the rights and duties of a citizen in our society. By taking part in community service programs, very young children can learn how to solve problems, work in groups as leaders or group members, and accept the duties for their decisions and actions. Besides, children develop knowledge of their community—its leaders, organizations, social groups, and standards of civic behavior.
Community service programs can provide the chances for students to learn social study skills. These include higher-level processes and skills of information collecting, critical thinking and decision making. Community service programs also teach processes and skills for group discussions, leadership and teamwork.
