25、Is there hope for nature?
David Attenborough is a well-known English broadcaster and natural historian. He has made over 40 documentaries over the last 67 years. At the age of 93, he made his most recent documentary—A Life on Our Planet (《地球的一段生命旅》). It depicts (描绘) everything he has seen and experienced in his life.
Looking back, Attenborough says what strikes(震撼)him most is that wild animals are becoming harder to find. The documentary shows how the global ecosystem is being destroyed (摧毁)by humans, whether it's the hunting of gorillas and whales or the mass destruction(大规模摧毁)of rain forests. All of these can lead to another mass extinction(大灭绝). As Attenborough says, In the natural world, no one can stand alone.“The ecosystem relies on balance, and once the scale is tipped, the ecosystem starts to crumble(破碎).”
At the end of his film, Attenborough sinks into silence(沉默)in front of the camera. It is a very tense(紧张的)moment because he is thinking about what he has just told us. As I watched it, I felt like I was carrying the weight of the story on my shoulders.
But the documentary doesn't end there. Attenborough still gives people hope.
He says there are ways for us to restore the natural balance. From small habit changes to large-scale government regulations(规定), there are lots of things we can do to help our planet become wild again.
This is a documentary for everyone on Earth because we are all part of this. We need to take action now!

When people visited the Forbidden City in the 1920s, most palaces were closed at that time. But a century later, the 599-year-old palace has become the world’s busiest museum.
Open to the public
In the old days, the public could only imagine what it looked like inside. When the Palace Museum was built in 1925, people could go into the palaces. Now 80% of the total area of the museum is open to visitors and the number is going to increase to 85% in 2025.
Attracting the youth

Xu Jing often rides a bike in front of the Meridian Gate. “I had little memory of the museum then, but now I am more willing to visit it after several popular TV shows about the museum have been on,” she said.
Hugging the world
“It felt like you were hit by hundreds of years of history,” Christopher Allen from Britain said.
“I begin to love its history and culture.”
The Forbidden City is becoming more open and friendly to visitors. It attracted about 3, 500, 000 visitors from abroad and overseas exhibitions were held in 2018. 27、You either have it, or you don’t—a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory(理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”
Jim Martland also emphasizes(强调) that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
※ If you are using a map, turn it so that it relates to(与……有联系) the way you are facing.
※ If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree—something easy to recognize. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
※ Simplify(简化) the way for finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.
Now you will never get lost again!

Yesterday afternoon, when Liu Jun got home after school, he wanted to do some housework. While he 【1】 sweeping the floor, his father came back and stopped him doing it. Later when he was watching TV, his mother came up and turned 【2】 the TV and said,“You shouldn’t waste your time. Go to study!”
In China, more and more families have only one child. Parents only hope that their children can learn their lessons well so as to find a good job 【3】 the future. So they won’t let their children do anything at home. In fact, if the child has few chances 【4】 practice in their daily life, they will not be able to prepare themselves for the future. They can not do anything without the help of others. So it is not good 【5】 the children to learn only the knowledge from books. They have to learn about life. Don’t keep themselves in books only!
29、 Grandfather was a wise man. No matter how badly-behaved I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything and my secrets were ________. He loved me and would never give them away.
I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball behind Mrs. Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and …slam! It ended up breaking Mrs. Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran!
After I got home, I told Grandpa about it. He knew we had been ________ many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn’t. But he just listened.
“I was wrong,” I told him, with my head down. “I hate myself for what I did. Is there a way out?”
“Well,” he said, “Mrs. Ferguson has a problem, just like you. If she knew you ________ and you were afraid of her, she would be sad. I’ll bet she wishes you would give her a chance to be ________. It’s your decision. Are you planning to pretend nothing happened? Just keep quiet and hide what you’re not proud of?”
“I don’t know,” I sighed. “Things might get worse…”
“Let’s think it through,” he said finally. “If you were Mrs. Ferguson, what would you do?” I didn’t know what she might do. I had been afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. On the way home I imagined that she was a mean witch chasing me.
“Well,” I said, taking a deep breath, “One solution is to tell Mrs. Ferguson I’m sorry and offer to fix her window.”
“If you call her,” asked Grandpa, “What’s the worst that can happen?” I had to think for a moment. I realized that even if she did not accept my apology, it could not be any worse than seeing the ________ on Mom and Dad’s faces.
Grandpa smiled when he knew I had figured it out.
“Doing what’s right is not always easy,” he said, handing me the phone. “I’m proud of you.” Grandpa did not make me do it. It was always my ________. As it turned out, Mrs. Ferguson was very kind and we even became really close friends.
“Admitting what you’re not proud of is the hardest thing of all,” said Grandpa. “Choosing to be honest makes others ________ you and respect you.”
