  • 25、What are the cultural differences between China and the West? You might be able to find the answer in Cao Siyu’s comics (漫画).

Cao, 32, was born in Beijing, but left home at 20 and has studied and lived in the US, the UK, and France over the last 12 years. Having seen so many cultures, Cao wanted to use her artistic skills to present the differences she has experienced. So she created the cartoon series Tiny Eyes Comics.

“My experience shows that although travel is much easier and faster today, the distance between cultures hasn’t shortened.” Cao said. She hopes to build bridges and break down misunderstandings between different cultures.

For example, one of her cartoons shows water preferences in different countries. Three glasses of water are shown. The glass of water from the US has ice; the one from France is full of sparkling water (气泡水); the one from China is steaming (冒热气的).

Cao also uses her cartoons to show different ways of thinking and social customs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, she used her comics to explain why Chinese people prefer to wear masks, while Western people don’t. “Her simple sketches (速写) have played a big part in showing Chinese culture.” Italian magazine Grazia reported.

Many foreign readers say that Cao’s comics help them understand China, and Chinese immigrants (移民) have felt that they are seen and understood. She said that this feedback (反馈) has been the biggest motivation (动机) for her to keep creating.

  • 26、   “About half the students in regular Beijing schools have been bullied(欺负),” a report said. I’m not surprised at all.

I have to say that in my school years I was always bullied. My earliest memory was from third grade, when two older boys held a knife to my throat(喉咙) after school. I stood very still(不动)and they soon left me alone.

In sixth grade, I was walking alone in my neighbourhood when another boy ran toward me. As I turned to greet him, he hit me in the face and gave me a bloody nose. I never understood why.

In seventh grade I learned to give the bullies(恃强凌弱的人) my lunch money before they asked me for it. I never told anyone because I was afraid they would beat me harder.

Then came high school, where a bully named Shuey decided he didn’t like me. He spoke ill of me and laughed at me for months. He even challenged me to meet him after school, but I refused. So he called me a “cowardly boy” in front of my classmates. One day I had enough. When Shuey blocked(堵住) my way into class, I exploded(发怒) and knocked him down. He got up and we had a fight. At last I won and Shuey couldn’t lay a hand on me any more.

News of the fight got around the school soon. Nobody bullied me again. It was not good to fight, but something big changed in my life: I was not afraid any longer.

1When was the writer first bullied?

A.In third grade. B.In sixth grade. C.In seventh grade. D.At high school.

2Why didn’t the writer tell others that he had been bullied?

A.Because he didn’t want to worry others.

B.Because he wanted to make friends with the bullies.

C.Students should get on well with each other. D.It’s not good to fight with others.

  • 27、Colorblindness affects 350 million people worldwide. It is more common in men, with 8% of the male population having poor color vision. Here’s good news for such people.

A study has found that special glasses can help colorblind people see the difference between red and green—even when they are not wearing them.

The study by the University of California’s Davis Eye Center with France’s INSERM Stem Cell(干细胞) and Brain Research Institute(研究所) found that EnChroma glasses can help people better recognize the difference between colors.

The research, which was published in Current Biology(《当代生物学》), had volunteers wear either EnChroma glasses or placebo glasses. The volunteers kept a diary for two weeks, including days they weren’t wearing glasses. It was found that those wearing EnChroma glasses could better tell the difference between red and green. It was also found that there were lasting effects when the glasses were removed, although the study couldn’t say how long the effects last for.

Alex Zbylut was one of the volunteers in the study. He originally had placebo glasses before trying EnChroma glasses. “I had no idea how colorful the world is. And I feel these glasses can help colorblind people better see colors and enjoy the world,” Zbylut said.

EnChroma glasses were discovered by Don McPherson who is a glass scientist and EnChroma’s co-founder. He created special glasses for eye doctors to wear when performing laser(激光) eye surgery(外科手术). He started wearing the glasses as sunglasses and a colorblind friend asked to borrow them. His friend found that he could see colors for the first time. That led to McPherson and EnChroma’s CEO, Andy Schmeder, turning their attention to researching glasses to help people who were colorblind.

【1】According to the passage, EnChroma glasses can ________.

A.help blind people see the world clearly

B.help colorblind people see red and green

    C.help volunteers protect their eyesight

D.help colorblind people see all the colors

【2】The underlined part “these glasses” refers to _________.

    A.EnChroma glasses

    B.placebo glasses

    C.EnChroma glasses and placebo glasses

    D.common sunglasses

【3】Which of the following is TRUE about the effects of EnChroma glasses?

A.The glasses are helpless for colorblind people.

B.Only colorblind people wearing the glasses can see green and red.

C.Without the glasses, colorblind people can still see colors for long.

D.When the glasses are removed, colorblind people can still see colors.

【4】What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.How Don McPherson becomes a famous glass scientist.

B.EnChroma glasses helped doctors to perform laser eye surgery.

C.EnChroma glasses were discovered by accident.

D.Researching glasses to help colorblind people is important.
