24、You don’t have to be old to be an inventor. Frank Epperson invented the Popsicle when he was just eleven years old. One winter day in 1905, after a day of play, he left his drink outside with the stir stick (搅拌棒), he found his drink was frozen like an icicle (冰柱). Frank tasted it and found it was delicious. And it became a hit with his friends.
When he grew up, Frank Epperson sold land and houses for a living. By 1921 he had to make a living for his wife and five children. But Frank never forgot the frozen treat (冰品) that he had discovered. He decided to continue with it. He soon started a business—selling the frozen treats in seven flavours (口味). He named the ice on a stick “Epsicle”. His children didn’t think that was a very good name. They called the frozen treat “Pop’s sicle”. The name was later changed to “Popsicle”. In 1924 Frank got a patent (专利) for his frozen treat.
During the late 1920s and the 1930s, the United States went through hard times. Many people lost their jobs. Twin ice pops (双棒棒冰) with two sticks were invented. They were just five cents and two children could share them.
Today millions of Popsicles are sold every year. They come in thirty flavours. The most popular flavour is cherry. Now whenever we enjoy ice pops in summer, we have Frank Epperson to thank.

25、When a new student appeared in the music class, all the children began to laugh.
“You are in the wrong place, Granddad!” a student shouted.
“Quiet, children. This is Mr. Hant. I was his son’s teacher years ago. Now Mr. Hant is too old to work, so he wants to learn the flute (长笛) here.” the teacher explained. “Can old people really learn?” the children asked in surprise. “Yes, of course.” the teacher replied. And soon the old man played the flute better than any of them.
Two years later, the teacher announced, “This year, instead of the final exam, the best students will perform the flute in the capital.”
“Is Mr. Hant coming, too?” asked the children.
“Of course, he is our best student. It will be his exam to become a musician. The King will be there as a special guest. He has prepared the prize for the best musician - a gold flute.”
When it was Mr. Hant’s time to play, no one wanted to let him play. “You’re in the wrong place, Granddad. This is a competition for students!” they told him.
“And I am a student!” the old man replied proudly. Mr. Hant got a lot of applause (鼓掌) when he played. At the end of his performance, the King spoke highly of him and gave the gold flute to him in person. Seeing this, his teacher said proudly, “It’s never too late to learn.”

27、From Star Wars to Interstellar, I have always loved science fiction. My favorite class in university was astronomy (天文学). I was introduced to Chinese sci-fi through The Three-Body Problem after I moved to China in 2015. An old bookworm friend of mine told me about Liu Cixin’s famous trilogy (三部曲).
The Three Body Problem begins with the “cultural revolution” (1966-76) in the background. The key event of the story is when an alien civilization (文明) receives a signal (信号) from Earth. The Trisolarans (“三体人”) make immediate plans to invade (侵略) our planet. However, humans have 450 years to prepare. In that time, they form different groups. Some want to embrace the invading aliens while others want to fight them. The book goes back and forth between past and present, covering many themes—politics, psychology (心理学), physics and environmentalism.
I enjoyed the realism of the story. I think Liu is right in that aliens would likely come to our planet for environmental reasons. He’s also correct about humans being divided. After all, I think humans are irrational (不理性的). Liu also uses real science. String Theory (弦理论) is the modern idea about how our universe works. It features heavily in this story.
China has a rich history of scientific knowledge and certainly is no stranger to sci-fi. Lunar Colony was one of the first Chinese sci-fi stories ever written. It was published in 1904. The Chinese writer, known by the pen name Huangjiang Diaosou, wrote the serial in the magazine Xiuxiang Xiaoshuo. As a foreign lover of sci-fi, I find this interesting because some countries have only more recently started writing sci-fi. In spite of cultural, historic and political differences between East and West, China has made a massive contribution (巨大的贡献) to sci-fi.

【2】Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.The writer agrees with Liu Cixin’s predictions about the future.
B.String Theory is made up by Liu Cixin to show how the universe works.
C.The Three Body Problem is not only about the science and the future.
【3】What does the underlined word in the second paragraph “embrace” mean?
A.To fight back with full strength.
B.To accept somebody happily.
C.To help someone achieve their dreams.
【4】What can we know about the book The Three Body Problem from the passage?
A.The story happens in the future world.
B.Humans fight with the Trisolarans in the book.
