25、Li Boqian never imagined his childhood hobby for drawing could be turned into a career in shoe design. The 31-year-old, who majored in shoe design, works as a shoe designer at Li-Ning YOUNG.
“As shoe designers, we need to work out a design based on many factors such as material, cost, function and the latest fashion trends.” Li said.
Within one pair of shoes sits many ideas, and the development of these ideas takes time. Good shoe design needs a good “idea”, so it’s easier for customers to understand the ideas behind it.
As outer space exploration gets popularity worldwide, for example, Li has taken part in designing a series of basketball shoes called Xian Feng Li based on this theme, and appear this winter. “The ankle part is transparent (透明的), the whole shoe is inflated like a space capsule (舱),” he said. “The design and color of the sole (鞋底) look like the universe’s big bang.”
After designing a pair of shoes, Li passes his draft design on to the development team, which is in charge of making the sample product. “This is where problems appear, for example, the material I had in mind doesn’t work, or the cost is too much and so on,” Li said. “So I work on making changes together with them.”
Li believes that a good shoe designer should be always curious about the world and long for new ideas. “Sometimes, ideas take a while to develop in our minds, so we need to be patient and give ourselves time,” he said.

Katy Sullivan is an actress, an athlete, and a person who refuses to use the words “no” or “can’t”.
