24、You may have already forgotten the days when you had to learn how to use chopsticks. Every Chinese kid manages to use them for some time. But chopsticks are not just simple tools to pick up food. They come with their own special rules and traditions.
Generally, people should not make noise with chopsticks. Playing with chopsticks is seen as bad manners, just as playing with forks and knives in a Western country would be rude.
There are also some superstitions (迷信) related to chopsticks. For example, some people believe that chopsticks should not be left standing upright in a bowl. It looks like the incense (香) that Chinese use to honor the dead. Doing it at the dinner table is believed to bring bad luck.
You should not use chopsticks to hit on the edge of the bowl either, as beggars do this to ask for food. Parents might get angry if children do this as they don’t want their children to be as poor as beggars in the future.
Besides, chopsticks can also be a great gift. In Chinese, “chopsticks” are known as “kuaizi”, so newlyweds (新婚夫妇) feel happy to receive chopsticks as a wedding gift. Skilled craftsmen paint beautiful pictures on chopsticks to make them look like fine artwork. Today, even people from western countries are learning to use chopsticks and like to collect them as souvenirs.

【2】It is funny to play with chopsticks.

25、When you and your friends ever talk about your dreams, you might have noticed something interesting—some of your friends rarely remember their dreams, but some can always describe their dreams very clearly. What makes those people different?
Well, there are two different types of dreamers—low dream recallers(回忆者)and high dream recallers.
Low dream recallers usually remember their dreams only twice a month. But high dream recallers are able to remember them about five mornings a week. And a new study suggests that activity in a certain part of the brain could have something to do with it.
Perrine Ruby, a French researcher, studied 41 people(21 high dream recallers and 20 low dream recallers)and recorded(记录)their brain activity.
She found that a part of the brain called the temporo-parietal junction(颞顶联合区)was more active in high dream recallers than in low dream recallers—both when they were sleeping and awake.
This brain area collects and processes information from the outside world. This means that high dream recallers know more about what’s happening around them. For example, when they are awake, they respond(反应)more strongly to hearing their own names, and when they are sleeping, they are woken more easily by sounds and movements.
By closely studying people’s brain activities, Ruby found that high dream recallers have twice as much “wakefulness time” during sleep as low dream recallers do. And it is during these short times of wakefulness that the brain memorizes dreams.
“The sleeping brain is not able to memorize new information,” Ruby told The Washington Post. “It needs to wake up to be able to do that. “This is not hard to understand. Just try to think of your own sleeping experiences. If you are restless (不安的)during the night, you are more likely to remember your dreams. If you sleep well, you will remember little in the morning, and this is because you never get a chance to remember,” Robert Stickgold, a Harvard Medical School researcher, told The Washington Post.

26、Several days ago, I went to my aunt’s home and saw my cousin who is studying English linguistics(语言学)in a college. He showed me his learning materials. Here are two pages of it.
Nice Generally speaking, the word “nice” is quite an expression of praise(赞扬).However, back in the late 12th century, if someone said you were “nice”; it was far from saying good wards about you. Very long ago, “nice” was used to mean “foolish” and “stupid”. That sounds more like the kind of words that would start a fight, not put a smile on someone’s face. Later on in the 13th century, “nice” came to near “shy and nervous”. During the 14th century; it even meant “being careful”. But finally in the 18th century, it changed to the kinder meaning we know today, an ever since then, people have been using it in a lovable way. | Sad All of us get sad from time to time. It’s a usual part of life. A loved one passes away. We expect too much progress in an exam. Or the store is out of our favorite drink. These are all things that can make us sad. However, once upon a time, “sad” had a very a different meaning. Back in the 14th century, it was the perfect word if you had eaten too much food at dinner. Through the years, the meaning of “sad” changed to “ heavy” and then “tired”, Interestingly, when “sad” took on its present meaning, it was actually used instead of “unrot” an old English word that was the opposite of “rot” that meant “cheerful” or “glad”. |

27、Everyone gets sad. Sad feelings can happen often. More than half of the teenagers feel sad at least once a month.
When you are sad, it feels like it will last for a long time. However, the feeling of sadness usually doesn’t last very long—a few hours or maybe a day or two.
When you are sad, the world seems dark and unfriendly. Many times, you cry and it’s hard to stop. Crying usually makes you feel better. When sadness starts to go away, it feels like a heavy stone (石头) is lifted from your heart. You’ll feel relaxed. If sad feelings go on for too long, it’s called depression (抑郁症). Children who have depression may not know it. Often, a parent or a teacher knows the changes of them. When depression happens, it’s important for children to get treatment. When they do, they can get better quickly. Sometimes it means talking to someone who knows about depression. Sometimes it means taking medicine. Sometimes both of these things are used. If you think you have depression, or you just have sadness that will not go away, it’s important to talk to a parent or a teacher. He or she can help you find the right way of treatment.
【1】How long may sadness usually last?
A.A day or two.
