  • 23、When I looked at the grade on my math paper, my jaw (下巴) almost dropped to the ground: a big “65” in bright red ink. I had never received such a terrible grade before.

【1】I told him I got 85 and that the report wouldn’t come until the end of the month. Dad smiled. His daughter would never lie about her grade, so he didn’t doubt the unusual delay (延迟) of my report.

A month later, Dad casually (随意地) asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and askd for an answer. 【2】 I had lied because I didn’t want to let him down.

For a moment, he just looked at me. I would have preferred a telling off than that silence. Finally, Dad said, in a hurt voice,“You have already let me down, with your lie. I am not disappointed at your math score. That is no big deal—no one can be perfect all the time. But I am very disappointed in you. 【3】It’s much easier to achieve a better grade than rebuild someone else’s trust in you.”

Dad’s words touched my heart. I couldn’t forgive myself for having hurt his feelings. I took out the report that I had been hiding for weeks, handed to him and apologized, sincerely. I realized that my honesty is not only important to me personally, but to those around me that trully care about my well-being.

In one of Shakespeare’s plays a character says:“No legacy (遗产) is so rich as honesty.” 【4】And from then on , I’ve never told a lie to anyone in the world.

    A. If you can’t be honest with your dad, who can you be honest with?

    B. After the talk between Dad and me, I began to understand those words.

    C. Having no choice, I told him that I had in fact got just 65 in my math final.

    D. I was so ashamed (羞愧) that when I got home that afternoon I lied to my dad.

    E. My father was quite satisfied with the score and he sang high praise for what I’ve done.

四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Think of somebody you really admire. You will probably find that their success didn’t come easily. As “Father of Hybrid Rice (杂交水稻)”, Yuan Longping got over great difficulties and spent his whole life working to reduce (减少) world hunger and helping to feed the country with the largest population.

Wu Mengchao. the “Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery” (肝胆外科), focused on saving people’s lives for nearly eighty years. He did more than 16, 000 operations (手术) during his life. Holding the knife for such a long time deformed his fingers. Wu once said, “It would be my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until my dying day.”

In 1969, in order to solve the problem of malaria (疟疾). Tu Youyou, a pharmacologist (药学家), took on the job as head of a research team. She and her teammates did different kinds of experiments (实验). However, the results were disappointing. Instead of giving up, they kept trying. Finally, in 1972, they made it! In 2015, at the age of 85, she received a Nobel Prize.

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, believed that every failure was a step towards success. He once said, “If I find 10, 000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I didn’t give up, because every wrong try is another step forward.” Sometimes, their success was a surprise, even to themselves. The famous scientist Alexander Fleming said, “When I woke up just after daybreak on 28th September, 1928, I certainly didn’t plan to revolutionise (变革) all medicine by discovering the world’s first antibiotic (抗生素). But I guess that was exactly what I did.”

Some people only became successful after their deaths. Not like Pablo Picasso who became famous and very rich during his lifetime, the artist Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting all through his life and that was to a friend. But he kept painting and he painted more than 2,000 artworks in the following ten years. Now his paintings are very popular and they sell for millions of pounds.

One thing all these people have in common is sticking to (坚持) their goals no matter what happens.

【1】What do Yuan Longping and Wu Mengchao have in common?

A.They succeeded in solving world problems.

B.They spent all their lives serving people.

B.Vincent Van Gogh painted 2, 000 artworks in his whole life

C.it took Tu Youyou’s team about 3 years to reach their goal

D.Thomas Edison tried 10,000 ways before he invented the light bulb

【4】When Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic, he ________.

A.felt too tired to stay awake

B.didn’t plan to study all medicine

C.knew exactly what his success meant

    D.didn’t fully realize its importance

【5】What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

    A.Not everyone can be successful

  • 26、There are reports that some developed countries have shipped broken parts of computer to China. Such a thing can be found every day though it’s against international laws. Last month Hong Kong officers found 131,000 kilograms of broken computers, TVs and phones sent from Japan. Things like this are called e-waste. Dealing with them isn’t an easy job because dangerous poisons like mercury() and lead() can be found in them. Every time an old computer breaks down, it needs dealing with safely. But at present, broken computer parts are usually buried. It may be hundreds years before they are really gone in the soil.

Many places in China are polluted by e-waste. Guiyu in Guangdong Province is one of them. This town is named as “the e-waste capital of the world”. It has to deal with 1.5 million kilograms of e-waste each year, from which it makes 75 million yuan, But many of the poisons find their way into the environment. Greenpeace, an environmental group, has found the air, the earth and rivers in Guiyu badly polluted. This year, China presents a new environmental protection law. Computer companies like Lenovo and Dell will be asked to take back their old computers. This is because the companies that make computers know best how to deal with them safely. Hopefully, the problem with e–waste will be solved in the near future.

    C. the e-waste problem in China   D. the causes of e-waste

  • 27、To celebrate his friend’s birthday, Luke Fortune drove from a small town in Central Oregon to Portland, where he parked his car in a paid garage overnight. The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed, along with his dreams for the future: His backpack and computer were gone.

“Everything important to me was on that computer,” said Fortune, 21, who is studying to become a paramedic.

Two days after the theft, another young man was standing outside his apartment, also in Portland. Masoud Almazrouei, 29, was an exchange student from the United Arab Emirates. He had been approached by a man who said he had a computer for sale. Only $200. Almazrouei, who had been in the United States for only a year, admits now that he was naive(天真的). But he needed a computer so he bought it, took it home, and turned it on. Within seconds, he saw files and photographs.

“I wondered who would sell a computer with all of this on it,” he said. “I realized it could be stolen.” Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner’s cell phone number and called it.

Fortune didn’t trust this guy with a thick accent and thought it was a seam.

Soon after, a police officer called Fortune to say that a man had dropped the computer off and bad said he was sorry. He passed along the man’s number.

Fortune called and thanked Almazrouei and insisted on paying him a reward of $200, the money he was out. Almazrouei refused. He said it was his mistake to buy the computer from someone he didn’t know. More important, he said, it was his honor and duty as a Muslim to return the property to the rightful owner. “I saw a photo of this man in his paramedic uniform,” Almazrouei said. “They help people. He is a good man. I don’t want my money back.”

Still, the encounter produced its own kind of rewards. For Fortune, it was a lesson of cultural awareness during the sometimes terrible national argument about immigrants(移民), especially from the Arab world. “I’m from a small mainly white town,” Fortune said. “I’ve never met a Muslim(穆斯林).To my surprise , he’s a good man.”

Almazrouei’s lesson was perhaps beyond words. When a story about the two young men’s encounter made it to the local papers, Almazrouei received a call from Wim Wiewel, the president of Portland State University, where Almazrouei is studying economics.

“We thought since you gave back the laptop, we should give you a laptop so that you’ll have one,” Wiewel told him. “We’re very proud of you. It was a great story, but you did the right thing.”

【1】What is the correct order of the events that happened?

②Almazrouei found a lot of files and photographs in the computer.

③Unsuspecting, Almazrouei bought the computer at $200.

④Almazrouei called Fortune but it didn’t work.

    A.①②③④

    B.①③②④

    C.③④②①

【2】The underlined word “seam” in Para. 5 is closest in meaning to “________”.

    A.trick

    B.game

    C.mistake

    D.accident

【3】What does the author mean by saying “Still, the encounter produced its own kind of rewards” in Para. 8?

A.Kindness will eventually pay off one day.

    B.Almazrouei entered a famous university.

C.Fortune could realize his dream with his computer back.

D.Both of the young men learned something in their own way.

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

    A.Theft is common in Portland.

    B.Almazrouei was short of money.

C.Fortune could not realize his dreams without his computer.

D.Fortune used to look down on Muslims.
