24、 Here is a report on school in the United States of America.
1 Introduction
Some of you may wonder : What are schools in the US like ? Are there more activities than schools in Hong Kong ? Are there more teachers ? This report aims to answer some of these questions
2 Education system
There are two types of schools in the US: public and private schools . Students studying at public schools do not have to pay tuition fees (学费) because the schools get funding (资金) from the government . Private schools ,however , have to seek their own funding , so they may charge parents a high fee.

3 Student-teacher ratio (比例)
In the US, the student-teacher ratio in secondary schools is about 10:1 . That means each teacher has to take care of about ten students . In Hong Kong , the ratio is roughly 25:1.
4 School uniforms
Most schools in Hong Kong require students to wear uniforms with school badges (校徽) on them . Students who are improperly dressed are punished . Unlike Hong Kong , only 13% of schools in the US require students to wear uniforms.
5 Extra-curricular activities
American schools give a high priority (优先)to sports , clubs and activities . The two major sports for American students are football and basketball . Schools may sell “spirit” shirt to wear to inter-school competitions and raise money .

27、 A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles (踝关节) was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I decided to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class, the teacher required us to run and hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later told me that I was "not athletic".
The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. It was a test of wills.
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating (出汗) and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
The next day, the Marathon started.
At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly.
By mile 21, I was quite hungry. As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished. And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签). I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

28、
Why do we call women jinguo(巾帼)in Chinese?
In China, jinguo is a cool and somewhat literary way to refer to women.
But what does it【1】(actual) mean ?
It is a kind of【2】/skɑːf/ or head wrap that was worn in ancient China.
Before the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220), it was fashionable for men and women to use jinguo to wrap their hair. Later on, only women wore them.
It is said that jinguo was used to refer to women because of Zhuge Liang—a famous statesman who lived【3】/ˈdʊrɪŋ/ the Three Kingdoms period(220-228).【4】(story) say that Zhuge once started a war【5】the Wei Kingdom. However, the Wei general(将军) Sima Yi didn’t want to fight and asked his army to stay in the city. Zhuge then【6】 (send) a jinguo to Sima as a form of humiliation(羞辱)—implying that Sima was as timid(胆怯的)as a little girl.
After that, people started to use jinguo to refer to women, but as a form of praise【7】 . There is a phrase“巾帼不让须眉”, which means “women are not inferior to men”. Xumei refers to men because men often have【8】 /θɪk/ beards and eyebrows.
People also put jinguo and yingxiong together to make the phrase“jinguo yingxiong”, or “female heroes”.【9】 example, Hua Mulan and Mu Guiying were both well-known jinguo yingxiong in ancient China.
Today, jinguo yingxiong doesn’t just refer to female warriors like Hua and Mu. It can refer to any outstanding woman who has made great 【10】(achieve).

Dad was having another bout(发作) of pneumonia(肺炎). I stayed with him for the weekend but had to to my job by Monday morning. Local relatives would come and make sure he got his medicine and took him to his doctor appointments. But I longed to be able to let him know that we too, though we weren’t with him.

When leaving their grandparents’ home after a(an) , each child would a love note in the house for their grandfather or grandmother to find after they were . They’d put the note under a hairbrush, next to the phone or in the microwave. For days after their going away, their grandparents would smile they discovered these reminders of our love.
So as I made up a bed for him downstairs in the living room, I began writing . Some were practical. “Dad, remember to put the fish in the fridge so it wouldn’t go bad.” Some expressed my love. “Dad, I hope you sleep in your new bed.”Most notes were downstairs he had to stay for several weeks until he regained(恢复) strength, but one note I hid under his pillow(枕头). “Dad, if you have found this note, you must be feeling better. We are so !” While others cared for his day-to-day needs, we, of course stayed in touch phone. Our notes were reminder of our concern for him during this recovery period(恢复期间). Just like his medicines benefitted him physically, these notes his mental health as well.
Several weeks later, in one of our regular phone calls, I asked Dad how he was going. “I’ll tell you how I’m doing. I just found your note under my pillow!” he said.
