24、 A black bear was in a dangerous situation when she fell off a 30-meter-high bridge. After a long day in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, the bear probably thought she was taking a shortcut home. She was walking across the bridge when, suddenly, two cars entered from both sides. There was nowhere to run, so the bear jumped onto the rail and began to fall over the side.
Luckily, the bear pulled herself onto an arch(拱)under the bridge, but she was trapped there. A driver saw the unbelievable scene and called 911. Robert Brooks, an animal control officer from the nearby town, was sent to investigate(调查).When he found it wasn’t a joke, he soon called Dave Baker of the BEAR League-a group that helps bears in trouble.
Unfortunately. The sky was getting dark, so the rescuers had to wait. Early next morning, the two men returned to the bridge with more volunteers. Amazingly, the bear was still there. Dave had an idea—they should hang a net under the bear, push her into it, and then lower her to the ground.
Police officers closed the road,. After the net was in position, Robert immediately shot a dart(飞镖)with a sleeping drug into the bear’s shoulder. When the bear was sleepy, Ann Bryant, the head of the BEAR League, yelled, “OK, push!” A volunteer rock climber used his feet to push the bear off the arch, right into the middle of the net!
Firefighters volunteered to lower the 100-kilogram bear. When she touched to ground, everyone cheered. Ann and Robert guided the sleepy bear to a river, where she could finally get a drink. “She just kind of lay down on her tummy and out her paws under her chin,”said Ann, “like a dog lying on the living room floor...only big!”The rescuers then cleared all the people there and left the bear alone. 25、From the time each of my children started school, I packed their lunches. And in each lunch I packed, I left a note. The note might be a thank-you for a special moment, or a few words of encouragement for the coming test or sporting event.
When they were little, they loved their notes. And when I went back to teaching, they even put notes in my lunches. As they grew older, my elder son, Marc, told me that he no longer needed my daily notes. Telling him that he no longer needed to read them but I still needed to write them, I continued the tradition until the day he graduated.
Six years after high school graduation, Marc called and asked if he could stay at home for a couple of months. He had spent those years well, and he was very successful. He lived far away from home. With his younger sister leaving for college, I was especially looking forward to seeing Marc at home.
Since I was still making lunch every day for his younger brother, I packed one for Marc, too. Imagine my surprise when I got a call from my 24-year-old son, complaining (抱怨) about his lunch.
“Did I do something wrong? Aren’t I still your kid? Don’t you love me any more, Mom?” he asked.
I laughingly asked him what was wrong.
“My note, Mom,” he answered. “Where’s my note?”
This year my younger son will be in high school. He, too, has said that he is too old for notes. But like his elder brother and sister, he will receive those notes till the day he graduates.
