24、If you’re in a hard time, a tiny thing may be the greatest help for you. That’s touch. Touch is one of the most important of our five senses. It is one of the first senses we develop. One of the most commonly accepted forms of touch among people is also one of the first experiences we have in the world---A hug!
There is no better way to understand the importance of hugs than to lose them. For those who have experienced the loss of hugs, you will know how important they are to share.
A recent research has shown that when people hug, the brain releases the chemical which increases our willingness to trust and reduces fear. It has also shown that hugs are great for your heart.
In 1995, a pair of newly born twins was being cared for in hospital. While one of the twins seemed quite healthy, her sister was not. After trying different medical treatments, the nurse on duty, Gayle Kasparian, placed the twins in bed together. The twins immediately snuggled (依偎) up to each other. As one placed her arm around the other, the weak baby became better gradually. How great the power of a hug is!
The need for hugs doesn’t disappear as we grow older, though it seems we are less willing to give them. Research on people of all ages has proven that a hug is necessary for physical and emotional health.
Without hugs we can become sad. A hug provides safety and gentleness. A hug provides us with social contact, a sense of health and a feeling of importance and belonging.

25、There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don’t become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let’s have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful.
The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol (酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn’t start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency (紧急情况) even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He connected the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was produced by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal (踩动) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which encouraged good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray (烟灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The “voice” of the ashtray was started by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke.
One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs (转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do “high fives” with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.

27、 I live in Mentone, a quiet, simple, peaceful place, where the rich never come. I met Theophile Magnan, a retired, rich, old man from Lyons yesterday, in the Hotel des Anglais. Theophile looked sad and dreamy, and didn’t talk with anybody else, which brought me back to the past.
A long time ago, Francois Millet, Claude, Carl and I were young artists—very young artists—in fact.
Yes, Francois Millet, the great French artist, was my friend.
Millet wasn’t any greater than we were at that time. He wasn’t known, even in his own village.
We were all poor though we had stocks(存货) and stocks of as good pictures as anybody in Europe painted. Once a person ever offered four francs (法郎) for Millet’s “Angelus”, which he meant to sell for eight.
It was a fact in human history that a great artist would never be accepted until after he was starved and dead. His pictures climbed to high prices after his death.
Then we made a decision that one of us must die, to save the others and himself.
Millet was chosen, chosen to die.
During the next three months Millet painted with all his power, enlarged his stock all he could, not pictures, no! sketches, studies, parts of studies, fragments of studies, of course, with his cipher(暗号) on them.
They were the things to be sold.
Carl went to Paris to start the work of building up Millet’s name. Claude and I went to sell Millet’s small pictures and to build up his name as well.
We made Millet a master. I always said to my customer, “I am a fool to sell a picture of Francois Millet’s at all, for he is not going to live three months, and when he dies, his pictures can’t be had for love or money.”
Claude and I took care to spread that little fact as far as we could.
Carl made friends with the reporters, and got Millet’s condition reported to England and all over the Europe, and America, and everywhere.
The sad end came at last, Millet died, not really. He became Theophile Magnan.
The pictures went up. There’s a man in Paris today who owns seventy Millet pictures. He paid us two million francs for them. Do you still remember the “Angelus”? Carl sold it for twenty-two hundred francs.
We are no longer artists and Millet dead.
【1】Why did the four friends decide to choose one of them to die?
A.They wanted to be rich. B.They wanted to be famous.
C.They wanted to save money. D.They wanted to be respected.
【2】Which of these is a fact based on the passage?
A.The story was written in memory of Millet.
B.Millet was still alive but had a new name.
C.Millet lived a wealthy life at first.
D.Millet failed to make a famous artist.
【3】What made the four friends’ plan succeed?
A.That they didn’t want to be artists any longer.
B.That Millet’s pictures were sold at very high prices.
C.That people had pity on these poor artists.
D.People’s wish to own valuable art works at low prices.

This is a picture of something I did at my school last year. I wrote out 1,986 notes. Each said, “You’re beautiful,” and I stuck one to every locker in my school.

It took me over 6 hours to write all of the notes, and an hour to stick them with the help of one other friend. It wasn’t my original (最初的) to tell people that I had done it, but words got out after I had been called to the Dean’s office. They found me through the school’s video surveillance system.
After I everything that had happened, there was talk of a possible 3-day suspension from school (暂时停学). When I went back to my classroom, my teacher me what they said, and I told her. This is how the rest of the students found out. Throughout the whole day, words of the possible suspension circulated (流传), and a group of students came together and formed a petition (请愿书). They passed the petition school.
In the end, it had over 600 signatures (签名), from both students and faculty.
It amazed me that people would do that for me. For one day, I truly felt . And for one day, I managed to make every other kid in my school feel beautiful as well.
A few days later, after the incident (事件) was not , a complete stranger approached me. What she said to me was shocking.
“That day, I was planning on killing myself. I had given up completely on society, but because of you, I didn’t. You gave me . Thank you.”
What’s more than that is the fact that today she has become one of my best friends.
