24、Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes(基因)decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you're going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential(潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.
No doubt you're wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There's no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty (when your body starts changing and becoming more grown up).
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you're at now, how you've been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don't be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt(高峰)during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later ----between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.
You'll usually begin to notice that you're growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.
【1】The Chinese for the word “puberty” is _____.
A. 童年时期 B. 生长发育期 C. 习惯养成期 D. 婴幼儿时期
【2】If you want to know how fast and how tall you should grow, _____.

【3】This passage is mainly about ______.
A. how the genes work in your body B. when is the time you grow fast
C. why you look like your parents D. how you grow to a certain height
【4】After reading this passage, we can explain ______.
A. how good it is to be a doctor B. how much sleep time we need
C. why genes can’t decide everything D. what healthy diet is
【5】Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Your height most probably depends on how high your parents are.
B. Girls’ age for starting puberty is usually earlier than that for boys’.
C. The time showing the first changes of puberty is never noticed.
D. You may be scared sometimes when you grow too fast.
25、Here’s a difficult question. Are you happy?
It’s difficult because it depends on who you compare yourself to. Most people compare themselves with those around them. Am I happier than my classmates or my friends? We also compare ourselves with people we never meet. When we compare so, we may feel sad easily.
People like sad stories. We are interested in other people’s sadness, but we don’t let others know our own. Psychologists(心理学家) find that people don’t feel like telling others when they’re sad or upset, but they will shout if they are happy.
People often show their happiness in public while hiding their sadness.
As the famous thinker Montesquieu(孟德斯鸠) said about 350 years ago:
“If we only want to be happy, it would be easy, but we want to be happier than other people, and that is almost always difficult, since we think them happier than they are.”
【1】When we often compare ourselves with others, we may feel ______.
A.excited
B.interested
C.sad
D.surprised
【2】Why do people like sad stories?
A.Because sad stories are interesting.
B.Because they are interested in other people’s sadness.
C.Because they want other people to know their happiness.
D.Because they will feel sad.
【3】When people are in public, they show ______.
A.they are happy
B.they are successful
C.they are sad
D.they are upset
【4】People don’t feel like telling others when they are ______.
A.excited

【5】What can we learn from Montesquieu’s words?
A.To compare ourselves with others is a good way to be happy.
B.It’s always difficult to feel happier than others.
C.People will feel happy when they are alone.
D.It’s difficult for everyone to be happy.
26、 We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, around by people who are, like us, deeply look at their smartphones or, worse, fighting with the uncomfortable silence.
What’s the problem? It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s challenging, or we think it’s unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big advantages.
Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to look for an interaction (互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their waiter reported higher positive (积极的) feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband.” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral (边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a greater sense of belonging (归属感), a relationship with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners.” he says.
【1】What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.Interest in smartphones. B.Unsuitable behaviours in public places.

29、The Turners sat at the kitchen table. The sun was shining and filled the kitchen with a warm light. It was a perfect day for having a picnic or going surfing. But in the Turners’ kitchen, no one seemed to be paying attention to the________.
“Okay, girls,” said Mrs. Turner. “I can tell by the expressions on your faces that you have a pretty good idea of why we need to have this family______.” Linda and Kala exchanged looks and slowly nodded.
“Your mom and I have had many talks lately about the possibility of______,” said Mr. Turner. “We were hoping that it wouldn’t come to this, but we don’t have other choices.”
“But Dad,” said Kala, “Kilauea has been an active volcano (火山) since 1983! Nothing has happened to us or to our house yet. I know we’ll be________here. ”
“But your dad and I care about all the recent warnings given by the government. Even though we’ve been safe up to now, there is no way to guarantee (保证) that a larger eruption (喷发) isn’t coming up,” said Mrs. Turner.
“Mom, this is our______. I can’t even remember living anywhere else!” Linda said, fighting back tears.
Mrs. Turner put an arm around her daughter’s shoulder. “This won’t go ______for any of us,” she said. “Dad and I love this house, too. We have so many happy memories here. But we’re tired of living with such uncertainty. The most important thing in the world to us is that our family stays safe.”
Mr. Turner______.“ Girls, there are other places in Hawaii where we’ll feel safer. We’ll have to give up our house, but you know home is wherever we go as a family. We’ll make new memories, and we’ll find things to love about our new home.”
The girls were quiet for a moment as they considered what it would mean to move. “There are so many things I’ll________here, ” said Kala quietly.
“We all will, ” said Mrs. Turner. “But one of the places that your dad and I have looked at is only a few minutes’ walk to the beach.”
Kala and Linda couldn’t help________ when they heard that. They both spent every spare minute they had surfing. If their parents told them that they could actually live in the water, they would have been perfectly happy.
Mr. Turner walked around to the other side of the table. He put one large hand on each of his daughter’s shoulders. “I’m proud of you two,” he said. “Thank you for trying to________ why this is so important to your mom and me.”
